What would you do?

Ray, when I tried to align the two pics (using the eyes and the nose) I could not align the lower lip and lower (her left) cheek. Did you change these in post-processing?
Regards,
Jack

Hey, Ray. Maria is getting prettier by the day. She has always had an amazing tenderness in her expression. I like your retouches of her.

Ronny

well for a photograph i would brigthen her eyes up with a bit more highlights
and for the total touch up give it soft glow,, leave the freckles

here is my attempt at doing something

of course you know me, i had to paint it

lol

have a great day

REALLY appreciate the time and effort from everyone...so many great ideas and takes.

Guess I can keep a collection of this shot!

Jack, I actually changed the expression by closing her mouth a little and pulling her chin back up...hence the non alignment of the two.

Used portrait professional and liquify to do.....

Best wishes

Ray

I hope you and Maria don't mind Ray, I've done a smudge painting of Maria, she is such a beautiful little girl, very photogenic. It's a beautiful photo to practice smudging with.

Please explain the methods you used to achieve the skin tones. How did you get rid of the yellow around the eye, nose, chin, etc.?

Ronny

I like the original best, it is natural and
appealing.

A LITTLE BIT of sharpening and a light
use of levels and curves is in my opinion
all this wonderful photo needs.

The hardest thing to develop in learning
Photoshop is the light hand.

Good question. It was the one thing that bothered me after opening up in S/H. First I made a selection of the face and some hair (which was picking up green from the background) - leaving out the areas where the background was showing through - then selective color adjustment addressing almost every color - taking out cyan, green and yellow - here I went from my 'default' of 'absolute' being checked to 'relative' which gives a slighter adjustment. I then had to mask out some of the effect on the hair on top which turned a bit magenta and later I did a color brush to improve that as well. I also followed with the brush in color mode on the skin (before the selective color adjustment - it didn't work that well, btw, darkening areas as can happen in color mode), at very low opacities and sampling often, and having to go back on the history palette on some strokes.

I started out with your dual method action but ended up reducing the skin group layer to around 25%. I also wanted to retain the freckles and some highlights but still even out some of the blotchiness, but not fully. It's "part of" Maria, right now. ;-)

I finished with some sharpening in focus magic, and Topaz Vivacity which brought out highlights in the hair and brought back some of the skin texture as well.

Thanks a lot for the workflow, Kent. :-) I labored with it for a while using Selective Color and finally gave up and went with B&W. After seeing your retouch and workflow, I'll go back and give it another try.

Sorry no psd but I did reset Sel. Color a few times I recall hitting greens and yellows to lighten (black slider) and adding some magenta. Adding some magenta in whites, neutrals and reds but trying to balance that by adding cyan in some cases to keep from over "redness" (magenta can be a dominant hue, it seems, from experience).
and finally gave up and went with B&W.
One of the most 3D looking black and whites too! There is dimension there one doesn't see normally.
After seeing your retouch and workflow, I'll go back and give it
another try.
If I had more time (doing new lawn around new driveway... ;-) I'd revisit it.
