Hi, I am a new guy in the SLR world. One thing which is pretty annoying to me is that I usually close my left eye and use my right eye to view the view finder. However, usually after a while my left eye feels very uncomfortable. How do you guys deal with this? Should I keep my left eye open while shooting?

Thanks a lot,

Li

I've been using a camera for over 50 years, and never had a problem closing my left eye when using the viewfinder.

Right eye to viewfinder, left eye closed.

D40 with grip, Sigma 18-50 2.8 Macro, Nikon 70-300Vr, Nikon 105VR 2.8, SB600...

However, when using the lcd in bright light outdoors, It is difficult to see the image with both eyes open unless I wear my eye glasses.

most of the time left eye in view finder, right eye closed.

I will keep the right eye open some times. For example, getting ready to pan a car through a turn for example or candids at a party.
I don't know if it makes a difference (which eye) but I am left handed.

What exactly do you mean by "uncomfortable"?

I usually use the same method as you do, but after a while my left eye can't focus on anything anymore while my right eye can. This condition lasts for 8 to 10 hours.

I have already been to my ophthalmologist and had some eye-drops prescribed that I used for a couple of months, which hardly changed anything.

It does help some, when I use alternatively my two eyes to look through the viewfinder.
I guess, I'll just have to put this down to old age...

Guess it is a matter of personal comfort, and will vary.
Of the equipment I currently have:

DSLRs & 35mm SLRs and P&S and Bridges:

Left eye used, right eye closed, except if shooting action/street, then it is often open.

TLR:
Both eyes normally used for viewfinder, unless using the magnifying loupe.

I am left eye dominant and it is more comfortable for me to use my left eye for the viewfinder. I usually have my right eye when the camera is to my face but do often close it when taking a shot.

I am left-eyed, have glasses and close my right eye when taking pictures.

I am right-handed and right-footed, and I think there is no correlation between the "handedness" of your eyes and hands (not sure about hands and feet though).

Use your better eye on the viewfinder if you have a better eye. Some may find using the left eye too strange and still use the right eye. If you keep both eyes open you can see what is happening around your subject and catch other opportunities. I don’t do this most of the time.

This is true, im a lefty that is right eyed. Hold out your hands and make a smal hole with the webbing of your thumbs to see through. Focus on something, then alternate closing your eyes until you find the eye open that sees that you were focused on. That is your dominant eye.

That should be your viewfinder eye. Then you can leave the other one open for composition and depth perception (although it gets confused by the magnification) but your brain will automatically focus on what you are seeing through the viewfinder, it should result in the viewfinder floating in front of you.
