anyone know when the vista will be available?

For those of you with the Image Bank, is there any sort of confirmation that the files copied successfully or do you have to go on pure faith that the files you tried to dump to the Image Bank actually made it there successfully?

Thanks,

David

Hi Blehar,

I've been using an IB for a year now with absolutely no problems. There is no confimation,ie,you can't view files or check to see how much space is used on the HDD.However when transfering, a series of bars on the LCD indicate download progress much the same as downloading from the internet to your computer.Supposedly if anything is not working you will get an error message.I have never seen one of these,as I said my IB has worked flawlessly from the beginning. I highly recommend it.

I guess there's a little faith involved in about everything we do in computing or electonics.
Regards,
Karl

I agree Karl. I love my Image Tank. No, no download confirmation, but mine hasn't failed me yet, and if there are error messages in this little box somewhere I've yet to see one.
God Bless,

I contacted Kerry Reuer, Nixvue's Director of Business Development. Per Kerry the Vistas have started shipping from the factory as of yesterday and will be here soon. State Street Direct has removed their "pre-order" message from the Vista and replaced it with 'normally ships within xx days'.

Probably a good sign.

Thanks guys. I know the vista is a lot more expensive, not upgradable, etc. but I would really feel uneasy deleting images off a CF card without having some verification that they had been copied successfully, especially in those situations where the shots cannot be redone, like a wedding for example. There is just too much riding on it to get by on faith. Its reassuring that no one has had any problems but I'm feeling neurotic enough to think there's a chance I would be the first.

Thanks again,

David

If all the bars don't show up during downloading the IB then something has happened--that's what the bars are for, to let you know if something has gone wrong during the download--If all show up, then everything's okay with that download--no problems--Pat
Thanks again,

David is absolutely right. When shooting an event like a wedding, comformation, if only for your own peace of mind, is absolutely neccessary before deleting any images from a compactflash card. My policy has been to carry enough cards so that I never have to delete images at the event. In that case an IB or whatever would make a nice backup for the day until you got home to download the images to your computer.

I don't own either of these devices and I can see why you might want a Vista, but I don't understand your point here.

If you don't think you can trust the Image Bank to tell you if there has been an error, then why trust the Vista to tell you there isn't one? In both cases the device has to recognize there has been an error. In the case of the IB, it tells you that. In the Vista case, you ask if everything is OK and it says "NO". But if the device fails to recognize the error, the IB won't tell you anything and the Vista will tell you "YES, things are OK". In both cases you're equally screwed.

Or am I missing something?

The cost.

I had a Digital Wallet and now a Image Bank. Yes the Digital Wallet
would tell me when the uploaded was competed and if there were
any problems. Guess what, it also had a proprietary battery and when
it went dead, it was no good to me. You could not leave the battery
in it because even if it was off that DW was still discharges the battery
slowly. And let me add, I did not like the fact that when you recharge
the battery in the DW and that battery from the recharge process gets
HOT!. Scared me that me vauable photos where near something hot.

My IB has no extras and it is far cheaper that the DW. I have done
over 1000 uploads to my IB, never had a problem of losing files.

The DW was nothing but headaches and expensive ones.

Amen on the simplicity of the IT/B. Mine does have the lithium powerbank, which btw I just love, but it's not actually a part of the Bank, so it can be disconnected and shut everything down when you don't need it up. Which if I remember right is recommended anyway. And the cost difference...well I looked at the Nixvue, but I just could not justify the difference in price over the IT. Still can't.
God Bless,
Jim

I'd have to agree. I'm hoping my IT will arrive tomorrow and even though confirmation would be a "nice to have" I'm happy to test and trust that all is well. The IT has been out and field tested enough to satisfy me. My IT purchase is mainly for a Disney World holiday this August. What I may do, just for redundancy, is to see if Disney has an "Office Setup" available where I can take my D-60, cards, and/or IT and dump to CD.

The IT is going to stay in the room for the most part so no bumps, but it's my first device like this so I may play it more cautious. Davidk.

Don,

I think its at least reassuring to be able to look through the menu and see that all the files you had on the CF card are now listed on the HD of the vista. Like I said before, maybe I'm just being neurotic but man cannot live on faith alone.

I guess I will pay the price for not being trusting. I'm at the advantage of getting this as a graduation gift so I have to think about the price less. To be honest, if price were a bigger concern, I would have a hard time justifying the vista over the image bank.

Anyway, we'll see. I called B&H today and they said its going to be a few weeks before they have the vista in. More waiting...
