F-series Successor: What do you NOT need?

Too many features, and they won't test adequately.
What does "won't test adequately" mean? I'm not familiar with that terminology.

Maybe not a large button just something like the one that invokes the EV setting. It's small and out of the way but very easy to push without having to use the microscopic tip of your fingernail to push it in.. : )
Good thinking about the quick release eyelets. That would be handy !
  • the HUGE sony strap ... i prefer something a little smaller
The button would make the camera kind of like the S602Z with its
confirmation-like SET button. There's nothing wrong with that.

But DON'T take my neckstrap away!! I look so professional with it
on!! What I would like is if they took away this version and
substituted with some sort of Quick-Release version of the neck
strap eyelets.

We've covered the bases thoroughly as to what we'd like to see in a
successor to the F707. But this time, I'd like you to reverse the
process?

What about the F707 do you NOT need? What would you take out in its
successor?

Enjoy!
The useless burst mode.

Nightframing/nightshot. I know I'll be flamed for saying so, but I think it's gimmicky and I don't care for it.

MOVIE MODE. I find this to be the most annoyingly useless feature of any digital camera. Just as "digital still photo" mode on a digital video camera is annoyingly useless. Stick to one or the other, don't waste time and development money (which is translated into a higher cost to the buyer) on gimmickery. Be good at being a camera, not a swiss army knife.

So in short, we are all pretty happy. How about NOT having only the MS, but MS plus CF/MD. I know the marketing implications make this a pipe dream, but boy would it be nice to share media...well, a guy can dream.
What about the F707 do you NOT need? What would you take out in its
successor?
I sure like this camera, but since you ask, Picture Effects comes
to mind, and Manual Focus (theoretically I'd like to have manual
focus but as it exists on the 707 it's hard for me to tell where
the image is sharpest, so I don't use it much) Moving Images and
Nightframing... does anyone use Nightframing? I'm curious.

Some other thoughts
Make "Nightshot" valid in Manual Mode enabling full control of
daylight infrared shooting (we're beggin' ya.)
Move emitters so lens barrel diameter can be reduced (could they
pop up?)
I'm always untwisting the strap... (could the attachments swivel
less?)
I've messed up shots because because I forget that I'm in macro
mode, could I have control over whether that setting is saved or
not saved when the camera is shut off?
AE lock: could that remain in effect until I shut it off, instead
of the camera shutting it off?
Recording images for e-mail: for my purposes these are a bit too
low-res, but I would use it if the files were a little bigger, say
6" x 4.5" x 72DPI, that would be very handy to me.
I'd like to have contrast adjustment, and saturation adjustment,
although I'm rarely unhappy with what the 707 does on its own
without these settings, still I think a camera in this class ought
to offer these adjustments

Hey there, Steven -

Very nice post. I don't agree with it all, but it's well formulated and thought out. If indeed Sony does read this forum (and we have every reason to believe that they do), then this sort of input could be of help.
At the risk of contributing to this latter problem, I have to
disagree with you on manual focus. I had no trouble focusing my
friend's G2 manually because it magnifies the center of the image
much more than the 707. The 707's manual focus magnifies by a
factor of 2 (not enough), magnifies the whole image instead of just
the center (I lose my position) and doesn't show me the distance
Man, the dogs are nipping at my heals on this one! :-)

I'm not sure exactly why I have no problem focusing with the F707. Maybe it's because my eyes were trained on the F505 and the F505V (the latter which I actually owned). If you could focus in that hostile LCD (good only during daylight or bright light situations), then you could focus with virtually anything.
-Movie mode (clip art is cool, but I don't think the mpegs are so
Gawwd!!! I hope Sony is NOT listening to this one. How ever would I be able to make those little mini-commercials that my family loves to look at so much?
-The "mark photos for printing" function
Hmm... nice new one, there. Forgot all about that.
-Measly 16MB memory stick (take it out and cut the price - even if
it's only 5 bucks LOL!)
You almost HAVE to have a start Stick. They can't give you NO stick! :-)

Heheheh... haven't you worked with programmers before? :-)

They program the rough code. Try it once or twice. They say that it works. And then tell sales department and shipping that they're good to go.

Then the users buy it for the great list of 100 new features, only 5 of which were tested more than once. About 30 of the new features are found not to work as expected.
Too many features, and they won't test adequately.
What does "won't test adequately" mean? I'm not familiar with that
terminology.

I'll agree with you there, if you let us keep the Bracketing mode.

Oh no... OH NO.... no, no, no, no, no. NO!! :-)
MOVIE MODE. I find this to be the most annoyingly useless feature

Good GAWWD!!! What is WRONG with you "still" people? Don't you want some MOTION in your pitchas?? Don't you have family or friends across the country who would appreciate a clip of you and to hear your voice? I've got family down South, friends on the West Coast. Family down in Mexico and friends in Canada. Please don't take away the Movie mode...

I've noticed than none of the DSLRs have a movie mode. Its mostly because the sensors are not set up for this rapid a capture rate, even at reduced resolution. Buth the Canon 1D will do 8 fps for 3 sec, very short high resolution movies in both RAW and JPEG simultaneously with no sound.

And look at how those camera users are missing out!

You should tour around in the various D-SLR forums. They're just pining away after this feature. Why, just the other day, I was reading about a guy who was calling his D60 a piece of "Junk" (that's right... "Junk") because all he could do was capture stills. He wasn't having any fun at all with his camera. Can't say that I blame him. :-]

Josh, I'm with you %110 on this one.

Makes me wonder ow much cheaper the units would be without this function

  • Digital special effects (much prefer to do stuff like that in photoshop in case I prefer the original image later)
  • Lower resolution modes (I always shoot in high resolution modes)
  • Standard-quality JPEGs
  • Animated GIFs
Those are the features I don't use nor have any plans to use. To be honest I don't think they should be taken out though, they are software and others may find them important.

But DON'T take my neckstrap away!! I look so professional with it
on!! What I would like is if they took away this version and

I love the strap too. Just wish there was an easy to remove it (and the lens cap and cord) so I don't have to wrap around the camera body or ball up in my hand when holding the camera right over lakes and the frog pond.

1) TIFF mode.

(Of course, only because my wish list includes a 12-bit RAW mode which, when implemented, makes TIFF both redundant and an inefficient use of precious MS space.)

2) "Standard" jpeg mode. Since I've never used it, and I would never miss this 'feature.'

3) Same for solarize. Never used it, so I would never miss it.

(But don't take negative art. I use it much too often with 'camera-shy' subjects, usually kids. Often, once I show them a 'negative' shot of themselves, they let/like me to take more, so that they can look at on the LCD. Later, I 'invert' in PSE, and occasionally find a jewel.)

4) Clip motion. Used it once, the second day I owned the camera, just to figure out how it works. I've never even considered using it since, and probably have forgotten how.

5) Nightshot. (Well, sort of. I'll admit I hav never used this to get a 'real' picture. But, I will admit, I have used it as an ice-breaker at parties.)

Howdy.

Small "Fastex" or "side-release" buckles can be added to your current fixed camera strap to convert it into a quick-release model.

You should be able to pick these up at your local backpacking store (REI, Campmor, etc) and if you ask them nicely, you can probably also use their "hot blade" to cut and seal the nylon webbing on your strap.

Good luck!

I don't need the zoom button being upside down..
I STILL keep pushing up to zoom in!

I don't need the WB button right where my thumb is when holding the barrel in my left hand..

Manual focus 2x is simply not enough enlarging. Simply can't see well enough to be accurate with manual focusing. (Progressive lenses mean I'll never buy another camera that does not have the swiveling barrel/body!)

And I don't need to go to the set-up menu everytime time I want to turn off digital zoom..

kopper

lol
1. movie mode
2. clip motion
3. special effects
4. email function
5. red-eye flash function (it may work for some, but it usually
gives my pics "closed-eyes"

Sony should feel free to ADD as many new features as possible while
still keeping the DA around the same price point. If they add
significant features like the 2 indoor wb's we're missing and add a
bigger buffer for a longer burst and faster shot processing, I'd
even pay $1200. (like the 5700 is said to be priced). Sorry about
this last part, but I missed out on the 909 thread yesterday....lol
