Not possitive.....but I think you will loose any guarantee with the
used lens. For $199 difference I would go new.....just my opinion.
Now if the used price was $1300 I would give it serious thought.

Nope. The new 24-70 is selliing at $1699 at ritzcamera.
If you have the option to buy a used 24-70mm/f2.8, mint condition at
$1500, would you go for it?
when the difference is that small it is never worth it to buy a lens
used. you lose the 5 year warranty and the guarantee that you will
have a working lens and that nikon will fix it if it isnt. generally
if the used lens is more than 75 percent of the original selling
price at new you are better of going for new. of course, that is if
the 200 dollars extra you have to spend is worth the security for you

Someone in the GetDPI forums recently offered a D3, 70-200/2.8 VR, and 24-70/2.8 for $6K total. When the package didn't sell on day 1, he sold the two lenses for $1000 each! I missed out by about an hour =(. Those deals don't come around often, but they do come around. Btw, the seller was not inexperienced. He just likes giving extra good deals I guess??Pro glass NEVER sells for 75% of original selling price. I've sold a
whole bunch of it and consistently get 85-90% of new prices depending
on demand. If you wait for 75% of new you'll never buy pro glass
used (unless you get lucky and have an inexperienced seller).
Sure, it happens (although that deal you quoted is VERY rare). Still doesn't mean the guy should think 75% is the norm, it's simply not.Someone in the GetDPI forums recently offered a D3, 70-200/2.8 VR,Pro glass NEVER sells for 75% of original selling price. I've sold a

Sure. I just thought you were overstating when you said "NEVER".Sure, it happens (although that deal you quoted is VERY rare).
The seller I mentioned was neither inexperienced as a photographer nor as a seller. I think what happens occasionally is that someone wants a quick, no hassle sale and enjoys giving friends in a small, close community an especially good deal. I see this happen in an Olympus mailing list to which I subscribe, less often at GetDPI, and rarely at FredMiranda. When I said inexperience I didn't mean photographer I meant seller.
Is $1400 for a used, pristine copy of the 24-70/2.8 a good deal?
Too bad the MSN Live deal is dead![]()
