The new 24-70 is selliing at $1699 at ritzcamera.

If you have the option to buy a used 24-70mm/f2.8, mint condition at $1500, would you go for it?

Not possitive.....but I think you will loose any guarantee with the used lens. For $199 difference I would go new.....just my opinion. Now if the used price was $1300 I would give it serious thought.

Just wondering...if bought used that came with box, receipt, and everything. How would Nikon know it wasn't the first owner? There is no registration form to send in with the owner name, isn't there? I use the online site to punch in my equipment with serial which I have made mistaken in the serial and the site still took the entry. I doubt Nikon is using that to track ownership. i'm interested to know this as a friend is planning to buy some Nikon gear from me and I have everything they came with.

Thanks!

I just order from J&R using the live cashback program. I got 15% and the final price is only $1444, much lower than $1500.

Buy from thenerds.net at $1602. with 12.5% cash back from live.com, your net price is $1402 brand new with US warranty.

But they ask for the original receipt along with the warranty card. Thus if you sell your lens, the original receipt will have your name and not the buyers. It is my understanding, that Nikon will not honor the warranty in that case.

when the difference is that small it is never worth it to buy a lens used. you lose the 5 year warranty and the guarantee that you will have a working lens and that nikon will fix it if it isnt. generally if the used lens is more than 75 percent of the original selling price at new you are better of going for new. of course, that is if the 200 dollars extra you have to spend is worth the security for you

Nope.

The 5 year warranty and ability to exchange it if it is a lemon are worth the price difference (and then some).

Pro glass NEVER sells for 75% of original selling price. I've sold a whole bunch of it and consistently get 85-90% of new prices depending on demand. If you wait for 75% of new you'll never buy pro glass used (unless you get lucky and have an inexperienced seller).

I recently sold a Nikon 24-70 with original receipt and the buyer sent it in for warranty adjustment fully covered without any trouble.

Someone in the GetDPI forums recently offered a D3, 70-200/2.8 VR, and 24-70/2.8 for $6K total. When the package didn't sell on day 1, he sold the two lenses for $1000 each! I missed out by about an hour =(. Those deals don't come around often, but they do come around. Btw, the seller was not inexperienced. He just likes giving extra good deals I guess??

Sure, it happens (although that deal you quoted is VERY rare). Still doesn't mean the guy should think 75% is the norm, it's simply not.

When I said inexperience I didn't mean photographer I meant seller. I've seen pro photogs who are too impatient to bother with getting the last dollar out of their gear (they've already depreciated the thing for biz purposes) and sell at lower than average prices.

If you're savvy and patient you simply won't get beat selling pro glass (I sold a 24-70 and 70-200 for 90% of new prices - but I don't panic when things don't sell day 1 and give them away). :)

Sure. I just thought you were overstating when you said "NEVER".

The seller I mentioned was neither inexperienced as a photographer nor as a seller. I think what happens occasionally is that someone wants a quick, no hassle sale and enjoys giving friends in a small, close community an especially good deal. I see this happen in an Olympus mailing list to which I subscribe, less often at GetDPI, and rarely at FredMiranda.

While I've usually sold my "pro" lenses for 85% of new, I'll pass along a good deal if I get one. For example, I bought a Canon 24-105L (late copy, like new) for less than 70% of new on Craigslist and ended up selling it for the same. Felt good to give a great deal in a friendly forum.

Yes, I haven't seen one lower at reputable sites (FM, Nikon Cafe, etc). Best price I've seen for this lens in the last few months has been $1450+.

Joe
Is $1400 for a used, pristine copy of the 24-70/2.8 a good deal?
Too bad the MSN Live deal is dead :(

BUY NEW, BUY NEW, BUY NEW, BUY NEW...

Unless you are making a deal with someone you know and trust then I would BUY NEW.

BTW, I recently purchased my 24-70/f2.8 Nikkor from Ritz Camera in New Hamphire (no sales tax!) - but watch out! - they'll try and sell you their house brand filters by Quantaray (re-branded Hoya?) and extra store warantee. Oh, and they'll also try and push a "discount" card on you - and after they tell you how much you will save with this card they surprise you with a "small" fee if you want it. I don't think it's worth it - unless you only shop at Ritz.

As I've mentioned in a previous thread, I'm still looking for a Multi-Coated circular polarizing filter for my Nikkor 24-70 f2.8. Please, anyone with experience placing a polarizer on this lens...I would appreciate feedback.
I am trying to choose between Heliopan and B+W - slim or non slim.

I read that there is some minor vignetting when the lens is wide open. I am wondering if a slim filter would be more appropriate. And then there's the question of Kaesemann or non Kaesemann (sealed)...

In this case, with only a $200 dollar discount, I would buy new for sure.

Microsoft Live is a good way of getting awesome deal for lenses... like my brand new 85/1.4 AF-D lens that I bought for 650 shipped.

Of course, if you wait around long enough you can pick up some awesome deals in local sales.

Case in point: I recently bought my 70-200mm f2.8 VR off the local craigslist for $800.

I'd be willing to forgo the 5 year warranty for that sort of discount... especially since I know that I most likely can sell it for at least 12-1300 whenever I decide to upgrade... Pro glass I see as an investmen :)

for $1450 is a Good deal, i will go for it, but of course from someone i know
