D100 shots looks thoroughly unimpressive. That's a relief. Now I can wait for the D2 and enjoy my D1X a little more.

Great observation and backed up well with many relavant facts, F.U. You are both a gentleman and a scholar.

I made some prints from the D100 on a Fuji Frontier and they look on par with the D1x quality. The D100 samples I've seen looked a little shallow in the dynamic range area (they seem to blow out the whites easily,) but that's the only gripe I have. I think that's Nikon's martix metering seems to do that across the board though. I'm not sure which lens many of the samples are done with but I'll wait and see just how "unimpressive" the D100 shots are when I can so a side by side with the same lens on the D1x.

D100 shots looks thoroughly unimpressive. May not rival the D1X in every way but your words are a little harsh. I think they (pictures) will be a step up for me from the D1's . That's a relief. Now I

can wait for the D2 and enjoy my D1X a little more. I would love to get a D2 but can't deal with the time or $

after seeing these shots from a $2000 camera, i am shocked and dissappointed. i'll stick with my dimage7, for now......oldhotrod

our local camera store run a demo of the D60 so photographer could evaluate how it handles in studio. Objective assessment of several people, it's a DOG. It takes so long to flush the buffer into the card that irritates anybody. The autofocus is sluggish and the prints look really soft.

After watching these boards for the past couple months, it seems that a lot people want more out of the D100 compared to the D1x and others. It is not wrong to want more, but when you are going to compare apples, you have to compare them to other apples and not oranges. Remember, you can base an opinion upon an image seen on the web but would your opinion be the same if you could actually hold, feel, shoot and work with the camera after a couple days? I think all the information that is shared across these boards are priceless but one still does have to keep an open mind. You say "yuck" to images taken with the D100 for what reason? There is a time and a place for every camera out there. My D1x is my best friend and I know what it's capable of achieving and what it's not. I didn't choose the D1x based just on the output quality. I chosen it for the tool that was and for how I could grow and learn with it. The D100 is going to make a lot of people happy and I wish them all the best with their new cameras.

Technically the D100 is right next to it's competitors in some areas and better in others. (Low noise at highier ISO being notable) The shots we've seen from the brand new owners may not have the best composition, lighting and subject matter but they do show the excellent smooth images, very good exposures in auto mode (wait till the real photogs start unleashing manual mode) and excellent color options with the 3 color spaces. The D100 handles highlights better than the D1x and the D60 by default IMO and that's a definite plus.

Photographically, we will be seeing better pictures as both the newbies learn the nuances and the skilled photogs. start grabbing shots with this body. I think it's rather childish to start a thread like this, which is obviously an attempt at inspiring more colorful responses than mine.

I am quite confident though that the quantifiables of the D100 will show it to be an overall winner as the reviews start pouring in.

Phil...please save us from any more of these off the cuff and baseless threads regarding the D100!

I don't think the shots were 'yuck', however has anyone who has the camera said that they were very impressed with the camera? Granted, I have not read every thread to every post, but it seems like people are very happy they finally got the camera, but are not posting that they are thrilled with it's performance. The only comment that I have read is that the images are underexposed. Any comments from owners?

If the D60 shots look soft, the D100 shots would look even softer. Every sample I've seen that can be compared to the D60 has been a just a little softer. And then, from the posts I've read, when you try to sharpen it, the noise from the sky is made all the more prominent. I may still get the D100 nevertheless.

die_kruzen,

You make a good point, and the photos I post, may even be boring--so I will certainly be selective.

I saw this with the E-10. People were buying them left and right, upgrading from a prior camera, and they thought everything was automatic--well, it can be, but many photos will look like doo-doo. SLR is an acronym that means work. No matter how sophisticated it is, it will still require work on behalf of the user.

'I do just about everything in my CCDs...'

All this talk about over, under exposure - noise, saturation etc.

With my medium format rig and the 100's of films avaiable and a solid technique... these problems don't exist. I love digital but lets face it, it's a new technology and to expect digital (short of $20,000.00 backs) to

match the saturation and pin sharp smoothness of film is unrealistic at this stage.

Good digital shots are good shots... give digital 5 years then let's talk!

D1X, D100, D60... and everyones waiting for the D2! I can't wait to see the D3X!

Just my opinion!

I don't think there is much doubt that a large picture from a medium format film camera has much more sharp detail than a similar sized digital picture. However for closeups the digital is much easier to use IMHO and for smaller pictures, the convenience of the digital and the ability to take lots of pictures and process them quickly is a great advantage. I am upgrading to a D100, but also intend to get medium format (for landscape/garden pictures.

Sometimes I think that this forum is for kids -

"Is to" "Is not" "Is to" "Is not" "Is to" "Is not" "Is to" "Is not"

"ya huh" "Na uh" "ya huh" "Na uh" ...

The fact is that when you spend $2000+, either with Canon or Nikon, you're going to get a good camera. Yes, the D60 has some great photos behind it, and yup - D100 will show just as awesome. Part of it is the camera, part of it is the photographer, part of it is being in the right place at the right time.

I've got a D60 - whoop-tee-do - could I do the same thing with a D100 that I do with a D60? My guess is probably yes. Could I do more if I had a D1x or a Canon 1D? You bet - marginally though. (My experience level doesn't warrant the added capability, or $$$).

Yuck? Great review. Short and to the point. My advice to you? Don't by a D100. More advice? Don't post content-less messages. Opinions without backup info only serve to discount YOU, not the camera.

Guess what, I have some great pictures I took with my Olympus Camedia 3030Z - and it was only $700!
Based upon what I've seen, D60 wins hands down.
