capsized my canoe while taking pics of my 3 year old catch panfish.

Is the camera ruined? Can it be fixed or should i write it off?

Is the battery toast? Or can i keep it if I have to replace the camera?

Can CF cards tolerate getting wet? Or is it ruined?

Thanks for your help?

Only time will tell for certain, but ...

Take the battery and CF card out. DO NOT try turning it on and testing it out. Leave the compartment door open, open the lens cover, and pull off the plastic covers for the digital connector.

Let them camera and gear sit there for a few days or more to draw out thoroughly. and then you can try it out to see what happens.

If it doesn't work, you might try taking it to one of the canon service centers. They may be able to fix it for you. How much ... no idea. Depends on the scope of damage.

You can try that but I'll bet it's toast. Bummer. I'm assuming your three year old survived the dunking? ;-)

Dang, that was a sloppy posting I made. Should make a habit of reading before clicking post. Although, probably a wise idea to stop talking to myself too. :-)

Do not try to put it on. Wipe it clean and let it sit for 4-5 days and then try.

There might be some hope for you. My 13yo daughter had a similar experience, albiet with her much cheaper polaroid digita- swiming pool. We did everything others have mentioned, remove, battery, CF card. After a couple (three?) days I put everything back and the darn thing worked like nothing had ever occured.

Again, this was with a cheaper 1MP camera with a fixed lens, I cringe at the thought of my G2 ever taking a bath. Good luck to you.

I've heard people leaving a flash card in a shirt pocket, then sending it through the washer, and when the card dried out it was fine.

Not so optimistic about the camera though. Good luck.

You need to clean it. Get some distilled water and rinse your camera. The water from the lake is not clean and it will cause the circuit to short out after you have used the camera for a while. The optics may benefit from distilled water as well. Be sure to let everything dry for a few days before inserting the battery.

Don’t wait. The longer the contaminated water sits on the circuit the harder it is to remove. I used this procedure with a lab top and a few calculators. Everything is still working.

The Polaroid came back to life so that it could suck more money for film out of you

Try using a hair blower...not too hot...and blow inside the camera for awhile. I has worked for many electrical things i have dropped in water.

I've heard of putting it in a sealed tupperware container with those little dessicant packets to draw out the moisture. The distilled water sounds good too.
