What would you use the D90 video for?

Clips of my 2 boys being little boys. I have a box full of MiniDV tapes I never pull out because of the effort it will take to convert, clip and make them viewable by a sane person. Hundreds and hundreds of hours.

I grew up in a family that took super8 movies of family events. There was only a couple minutes per movie roll so Mom would always be judicious with the clips she took. None of this "hit record for 90 min and select the good stuff later." It's been 7 years and I still haven't found "later"

For me, I think this will give me better quality clips with the option to grab good stills if I need. I can combine multiple ones to create faster paced yearly family movies later on. Even I don't want to watch a 90 min soccer game of my son. But a few 20-50 second clips. You bet!

I think people that use it like that will be happier with more short clips than fewer long ones that you have to wade through. ( sorry, I need to learn how to write shorter answers"

Penguins at a zoo... ;)

So many reasons to have video, then why not? Any good reason not to have it?

Adding cost? Probably not much we had the live view already so it's more an incremental cost.

Purists #1, it's a camera not a video camera. Don't use the video mode then :P, besides it's not marketed as a professional camera, but it's going to be improved and I'm sure we're going to see it on all models eventually..... and if it's really successful we might see a dedicated model just for video, who knows. Yes it's not a video camera, and it won't do certain things a video camera can, but it will do things a video camera can't.

Purists #2, if I you want video, bring a video camera. But a lot of people don't want to bring a video camera. They want great pictures with the convenience of video when they need it. The people who want better video will get a video camera with stills capability. They'll get their video but have not as nice pictures. Just depends on where your priorities are. This just gives everyone another option.

Purists #3, Why didn't they bring down more pro options from the D300. Hmmm... well the market for this camera is still more consumer than pro. I'm sure their marketing/development team looked at which options would be used more by the consumer than the pro and selected which options they would offer on the D90 within a certain cost.

Purists #4 I want a simple camera like an FM. Develop a digital FM maybe called a DM with manual shutter, able to meter with AI lenses, no auto modes, no autofocus, etc.... Why waste money developing that when they could add AI metering to a D40 and be pretty much there for digital slrs. If you really wanted something manual that could shoot without batteries then they could add solar panels or use the film advance crank to charge the batteries needed for the electronics, just no LCD in the back :).

I have a Canon Vixia HV30 and the video is great and the stills are actually pretty good for a video camera. If I was shooting a p/s camera I'd probably just bring the video camera instead of both. With the D90 I'd probably leave the video camera at home. That's what happened to our old video cameras when we got a p/s with video that was good enough for us. Convenience won out at a certain point.

Bottom line this just gives everyone another option which is better than having no options. Sorry about the rambings... I get this way when I don't get enough sleep ;).

During get togethers for workshops the evening parties are always a blast. But someone trying to smoke a cigarette holding it with his toes is far more interesting on video with sound than on a photo. :)

I missed it last time, but when some drunkies start to experiment with helium it can be nice to have some video with sound.....

I would use the video mode for the same reason I use a 10.5DX and that is stupid party stuff. :)

Soon:

Crew. My daughter is on a high school crew team. The coach always wants video the parents want pictures. I could do both, granted not at the same time, with the D-90. Figure video at practice and pics at the race. I still might go with a d300 because of frames per second and a single frame allows the rowers to figure out what is right and wrong in the boat.

Auto Cross. My hobby is autocross. For those not in the USA, autocross is a timed driver skill event over a course in a parking lot. I enjoy taking stills of of the events. Video would be a useful training tool for me when I make my runs. The runs here last about a MINIute.

Dog Training. My wife and dog enjoy different kinds of training. It would be fun to take some video of them and not having to lug extra gear. Anyone with a f2.8 Sigma 120 - 300 will understand.

Daughter about to leave home and move to college, camping, cooking on the barbi....

It is just another tool in the box to play with.

Morris, start a video blog.. I would watch it every day and laugh.

We could call it

"Morris Rants"

and your line that you would use on that show would be..

"DON'T OVER PROCESS ME OR I WILL DODGE YOU!"

If that makes any sense at least...

I won't be shooting digital for 3 months. Shooting film for now, and learning to develop my own!

Are there any sample vid clips where the subjects are moving forward or away from the camera? I've already seen the one where a bicyclist is going from one side to other going off a ramp which isn't too hard to pre-focus. But for subjects moving towards or away from the camera, that may be very difficult to manual focus and "track" the subject in focus.

About 25% of the time I'll proabably take short videos of things I'm trying to capture in my still images. Maybe I'll learn something. But most of the time I'll be capturing the crazy things my kids are doing.

Keep shooting,
Bill
