E-1 handgrip rubber coming adrift, ideas please?

The rubber on the handgrip on my E-1 is coming adrift, has anybody had the same problem and did they find a solution to fix it? I can probably fix it myself anyway but other people's ideas may be better.

This is a common problem on various Olympus cameras, that seems to affect some people. I had it with my C-2100UZ and my E-1. On my C-2100UZ, I initially tried some glues and could not get them to work. The way I solved it was to get an extended warranty for both cameras which includes a free cleaning and checkup, and Olympus re-glued it. You have to get the extended warranty while the camera was under the normal 1 year warranty (if you are in the USA).
 
Send me an email. I have a Word document that describes the required parts to repair the E-1 rubber grip.

Just spoke to Olympus America regarding obtaining these parts. They are unwilling to sell these parts.
Bottom line, they want $230 flat rate to repair the grip.
A strong voice from all of us may make a difference.

Merely re-gluing the grip does not always work. One reason it comes undone is that the rubber deforms and it no longer really fits the body.

There are two solutions if the rubber has deformed:

1) Press the grip back into place and use a razor blade or hobby knife to trim the excess at the edges. Properly done, this allows the rubber to fit reasonably well again. This is the approach I took. It's not perfect, but it worked well enough for me that I do not feel compelled to pursue it any further at this point.

If you are worried about damaging the rubber in this fashion, just remember that you are planning to replace it anyway. You can really do no harm.

2) Send it to Olympus for a replacement, along with a general cleaning and adjustment. Expect to spend $225 or more for that.

If the grip is beginning to give problems and reglueing it doesn't work, it may be best to replace it while parts are relatively easily available.

Luton Cameras are authorised Olympus repair agents in the UK. They sell genuine Olympus replacement grip kits for the E-1 including the required double sided adhesive tape. See the link below for the eBay listing. Or you can contact them direct.

Thanks form that, it looks OK and so cheap, Luton Cameras are OK they sorted out my brothers Canon G3 problem.

Just ordered the E-1 Rubber Grip Replacement Kit direct from Luton Cameras, thanks again for putting my mind at rest, I had a vision of having to send it back to Olympus, out of warranty and it costing me plenty, £12.50 including postage, that will do for me!

I ordered the required parts, and need help on how to do this procedure.

What does one do?

1) Place the tape on the camera or the grip first?

2) How does one place the grip onto the camera, front- or rear-seam first?

3) Are additional adhesives suggested? (seems they may affect the gasket seam around the LED).

4) How much, and, for how long should pressure be applied, I do not have a vice grip in this shape.

I looked for a youtube video on the process and did not see anything. If anyone were so motivated to post one, that would be appreciated.

hi barrie,i had same problem with my e510,and there was no way it would go back in to the right positon.camera was only three months old i took it to a service centre and they could not get it in right positon.they had to order new grip from olympus,on top of that the print on dials was fadding away after about 1500 shots.olly could not

be more helpful with fixing my camera

Remove the old rubber and the old adhesive tape from the E1, ensure all remaining adhesive is also removed.

Place the tape on the camera first, I aligned everything with the backing paper still on first to ensure I'd got it right, I then stuck the tape to the camera.

I aligned the rubber with the sensor, if that's in place correctly the rest just falls into place.

No additional adhesives are necessary, the kit does its job well.

As you push the rubber onto the tape it adheres, I then simply ran my thumb over the whole rubber to ensure it was firmly in place.

It really is an easy task, much easier than making a video would have been. ;)

Never, ever use super glue (cyanoacrylate glue) on optical or electronic equipment.
