Hi everyone

I was curious as to the robustness of the plastic digital camera. I have read some real horror stories such as one guy who was taking a photo out of the car window (at speed) when he lost his grip and the camera went bouncing along the highway - it survived in a rather scratched and battered form. I guess there have been many others that didn't though.

So - which of the elements has your camera survived to your astonishment?

Canon 40D, canon 450D efs 18-55mmIS, ef 50mm f1.8, ef 28-105mm F3.5, efs 10-22mm, ef 24mm f2.8
Fuji F30

The worst I ever took any of my SLR's in was a mosh pit. Generally the Point and Shoots get to do the dangerous stuff.

my canon 30D with 17-85 IS

I was walking in a backyard on a concrete sidewalk and went to step over a baby gate but didn't quiet make it and landed face first on the sidewalk.

Small dent on UV filter on the lens and a little scuff mark on the 30D but both still work, well the 30D does I sold 17-85 IS but assume it still works fine

Go take photos :)

This was with a Pentax, but one time I was photographing at a local skate park, and wanted to get a dramatic shot of someone sliding down a rail, with myself close to the base of it. I took the shot, and before lifting the camera from my face, saw a skateboard flying towards me. I'm not sure exactly where it hit, but my hot-shoe mounted flash's plastic cover for the focusing beam light fell off, and I ended up with a fat lip. After that, the camera kept on trucking.

The last incident I can think of was when I managed to flick it out of my rucksack (the strap caught on the item I was actually pulling out), only a couple of feet fall, but not a pretty one...

Very worried to find out that the photos I took to check it was still working came out all blue, thinking I had done some serious damage.

After I reset it to default I figured it out - I had been shooting in a gym hall with a very orange light cast, so had set a custom white balance and forgot to change it back after. D'oh

I dropped my 2 week old 400d into the white sand of malaysia, it just slipped. There is still some sand in the gaps between the buttons and the body, but it is a tool so it has to come everywhere, no mercy. And i still refuse to put on the neck strap, it still sits in the box.

Some years ago I was next to the boards at a hockey game when my external flash was hit by the puck from a direct slapshot. The plastic casing was cracked, but it still works.

My 350D with attached sigma 30mm f1.4 was accidentally inundated with beer by my wife.

The camera has a funny smell, but survived the accident with no damage whatsoever.

There was a wet rock..a large rock..and it was facing downhill. I couldn't see it because it was in the shadow, and it was covered with some wet pine needles. I stepped on it, and immediately slipped, and threw the camera behind me...it survived with minor scratches..sadly, some to the LCD screen.

Lesson learned= be super-duper-extra-careful when the ground is wet.
