Italy and my D3 with 24-70mm (warning, img's)

Who ever says memories have to look the way you actually saw them doesn’t sound like a very happy person. Too bad some people need things to fit into a category before they can appreciate it.

They’re not strict photographs, they’re images. And they are intriguing. Good work.

I love them! Great work, Neil. They look like they should be printed on Canvas as a piece of artwork.

Thanks.

We all like different things! Glad you like them though.

True. I don't think they're bad btw...the processing is just not my taste.

...but I do seem to be in minority. Seems most others Love them and that certainly means something -:)

they have a punch but can't say I really like them. bit ott for my taste

A few pics from my "honeymoon" in Italy last week.

I took my D3 and only one lens (nikons 24-70 2.8)

Hope you like and don't mind me posting these snap shots! (I know
some people here like to see photos.) ;)
I REALLY like 7,10 and 11 ( i think..) They have an atmosphere of the place I'd be proud to take myself.

My personal view is that the others are not photos within my own criteria of tickling with highlights, pushing shadows.. or even saturation.

They represent a lot of hard work I'd imagine.. but I would categorise them as art. My opinons on those are just as irrelevant as my opinons on 7,10 and 11 I suppose.

However it is my opinion. We can't all be the same though..:)

I'd like 7 printed large on my wall....!
best,

Neil.

Have fun :)

Neil, I had 2 immediate reactions when looking at your photos. First was "great shots, and great processing consistent with Neil's artistic viewpoint that I know and appreciate." Second, before even reading any of the replies to your thread, I knew that you'd evoke lots of praise and criticism. I won't link to a similar thread I had recently, but apparently didn't have as thick a skin as you do because I was stung by so much vehemence from some of the people looking at my work. Apparently I offended a number of people for posting images that weren't pristeen from my D3. Anyway, I enjoyed your post and look forward to more of the same.

Great work. I was actually surprised by your workflow (unless you're hiding something) because I thought there was a lot more processing.

They have a great "painting" quality to them.

Duh... i really hoped for some beautiful photos judging by the title of the thread. But first of all it's not ITALY but only Venice which makes it less interesting because Venice has been shot to death five hundred times already. Italy is SOOOO much more than Venice. And secondly your love for HDR should undergo a surgery. It's ridiculous. It's unnatural, but i guess that you wanted it to be unnatural, but still... even if it's intentional, it just doesn't look good. I know HDR is fun to work with to make your photos look like great landscape paintings of old masters. But those photos just don't. They look fake like some cheap hotel or vacation leaflets...

Mate, i know you can do better :) that D700 + 14-24 combo is so amazing.

This is just my opinion and not the truth but I do not like them at all. The sky was added after and does not match the photos, the composition lacks originality, colors are overdone, the light has nothing to do with Venice, etc.

I don't want to be like every other photograher out there.

You already said these scenes have been shot 50 million times!

How about something "different" for a change!

"normal photos" is the last thing I want to do! :)

I really like the look - YES - Different! Nothing wrong with that!

Some have a "pen in ink" or pencil-style outlining effect. Aside from the skies and other level/saturation adjustments, what are you doing that might add that look? (if anything)

Thanks for posting - keep it up!

Neil, I have only just seen these, where have I been for the past 7 days ?!?

I am a fan of your style so was very pleased to see some holiday 'snaps' that weren't just run-of-the-mill! Keep up the good work :-)

Yes! Do photography to please yourself and good for you!

I hope to visit Venice too in the next year or so and I imagine it a magical place as you have shown. On my yet to be taken photos I probably would tone down the PP a bit with my images but I do enjoy a little extra vibrance and saturation. The one thing that I find odd with the skies is that the light in the skies is coming from a different direction than the light on the buildings.

Thanks for posting your photos!
