Currently using PSE6, need a better noise reduction method. Noise Ninja seems to be the popular one, are there others (especially free or cheaper programs)?

I don't use aperture (yet) preferring to use iPhoto and send photos to PSE6 when needed to adjust.

If Noise Ninja is the best (if it works better than others) does it matter if you buy the home edition, or is the pro version the way to go?

That's a serious non-sense my friend! iPhoto is for low key amateurs... Why would you go half way? Get Aperture/Lightroom and solve this problem :)

How does going to lightroom/aperture solve noise reduction issue? I still need to use another software solution. iPhoto is a satisfactory organisation solution (especially as for the cost), although I'm sure I will go to aperture eventually. PSE6 is the editing solution anyway.

Amateur - takes photos as a hobby
Pro - makes living from photos

I am definitely a struggling amateur (but enjoying it immensely).

If there is a plugin that works with PSE (not sure if the noise ninja plugin works) that would reduce the amount of exporting you need to do.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

The NOISE NINJA PLUGIN for Aperture is now available. Easy to use
and works fine.
I would imagine that's the best option.

I've been using the Noise Ninja plug in with Bibble for a couple of years now and the combination of NN on the raw data really works. So the same thing on Aperture will be great.

I used to use Neat Image a lot (never tried it on the Mac) and it works really well but you have to fiddle a lot with the settings to get it just right. I never really liked it.

Noiseware is excellent too and in my experience you can't say that one or the other is the best because it varies so much according to the data it's working with.

Noiseware may do a great job on an image that NN doesn't and vice versa. It depends a lot for example, whether your camera produces more chroma or luma noise and what sort of scene type your shooting, smooth skin or something with lots of hard edges. Plus ultimately the one YOU find easiest to use will probably give you the best results.

I think they are both available as trials so see what works for you (although they are probably both well good enough) but if you're getting serious about this then definitely look at a program that does this at the raw stage and you won't regret it.

replies straying from the question and recommending Lightroom, Aperture, Etc.. The OP's question was clearly stated.

  • Noise Ninja seems one of the best
  • No free systems seem worth worrying about
all good, thanks again.
