Location
Tacoma (University Place), US
next month and am wondering if anyone has a location to recommend for photo shopping. Any place similar to Wukesong in Beijing? Reliable place for flash cards? Good shop for used lenses, flashes? Preferably near a good Mexican restaurant...

in? I'll be in Pudong.

I was in Shanghai two years ago and I noticed that electrical and photographic equipments are quite expensive. You will get a better deal in Hong Kong.

same as in Beijing. I was just looking for a location to wander around and window-shop. I don't need to make any major hardware purchases, but am always interested in used lenses.

There isn't anything in Pudong (photography related or otherwise). Take the #4 line to Luban Lu station, the mall is like a 5 minute walk away from the station. There's some good deals there, it's fun to look around. HK is better, but really it's not a huge difference, and you can get crazy Chinese medium format cameras quite cheaply. Either way, just because of warranties, it's better to get a new digital camera in the US.

I'll agree with the comment about Mexican food in Asia. I love the Mexican food in Mexican cities, though. Cal Kitchen is the Californian rendition of Mexican food. It's on Dagu Lu, a short street north of the photo mall. Actually it's more like a 30 minute walk and maybe a taxi is better. http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/mexican/has/cal-kitchen/

There's also Taikang Lu just a little north of that photo mall, it's a top spot for Shanghai tourists, but it may not be in your guidebook if it's an older one. And Wujian Lu food street, nearish to Dagu Lu.

I lived in Shanghai, in my experience there are no 'good deals' on major brands as they are imported and subject to duty, etc. There is a very high probability that a CF card you buy there will be a copy, there are much better deals elsewhere, especially in the US.

There are a lot of excellent photo opportunities on the other side of the river in Puxi, and several in Pudong - better than cruising the couple of photography shops IMO.

Personally I think that if you like to shoot film (especially MF) and are a camera nerd, the Shanghai photo shops are pretty cool. But yeah, for modern digital cameras, nowhere in the world are you going to get better deals than US's amazon.com. Unless it came out of the back of a truck, I suppose.

I go to PC Mall near Nanjing Market, not far from Pudong. If you are staying in the Puxie area, this will be like 20-25RMB for cab ride. If you are in Pudong, it's a 10-12RMB cab fare.

The nice thing about PC Mall is it also hosts laptop accessories on the same building. It has four floors of nothing but gadgets, and the ground floor is 50% devoted to photography, with Nikon and Canon having their respective corners.

Most shops prefer cash though. They usually will impose another 2-3% for credit card purchases.

"Nanjing market" or "PC Mall". Even though I can take a taxi, can you give me the name of the nearest subway station or some nearby well-known place so I can find the location on a map?

Thanks!

PC Mall: 721 ZhangYang Road

That's the address I got from a search. Just ask your hotel front desk. It is located near a subway station, but a taxi is the easiest way to get there. It is a major shopping area, so there are plenty of resturants on either side of the street. I don't know about Mexican, but the Papa John's Pizza is just like in the US. Since I live in Thailand, I made sure to get a taste of home there!

I was there in May and they don't have any great photog bargins compared to the US. I wish the weather would have been better or I would have had some winter clothes with me while I was there. I was very limited in the time for photography due to the weather conditions. It was very yucky!

Have fun and let everyone know how your trip goes!

days to visit a friend. I don't really need to buy anything (usually get my electronics in BJ or the US) but I just enjoy electronic markets...whether it's looking at iPids, PCs, or camera stuff.

Had some good fajitas last night...

That's right, your hotel concierge would usually have the address to PC Mall.

Enjoy Pudong! (There is a good massage center adjacent to Renaissance Pudong, btw :-) They charge around 100-150RMB.) Photographers need a good massage, after an all-day shooting, after all! :-)

I am presently living in Taipei and speak acceptable Chinese(last 5 years ) I recently visited Shanghai and found nothing close to the price , selection and quality of American stores. I was also in Beijing and went to their camera market and found there were many Russian and Chinese copies of Japanese and western cameras. Memory cards are a risky buy in China. Most are factory seconds and generally perform way below sticker specs. Even tripods are risky. I almost bought a Gizo ball head, or so it looked. When I had a look and start playing around with the movement I discovered it was a poor copy. Its the full con there. You will see copies complete with boxes and fake international warrenties (with holograms on them!). It wont be until you get home and start using them will you discover your mistake.

If I were you, I wouldnt buy any photo gear in china. Too risky, it may look like the real thing but it probably isnt. And if it, is it is cheaper in the US, HK ot Taipei.

Its a great place to visit and photograph. I have loved every minute of my life in Asia.

big items in the US and sometimes HK. I was just looking for photo-related markets to peruse for fun.

Nothing photo-related (or gear-wise), but the 7th Shanghai Biennale is on now. Quite a good section of the exhibits is dedicated to modern / contemporary / avant-garde photography in China.

Not sure this is your thing, but you said "fun"...
