Just a thought. Or 1080i video. Perhaps they could perfect it a llittle more by D3X announcement or release and have AF capable HD video. Wouldn't that be the perfect Canon beating combination? Superb quality still photos and Pro quality HD Cam capability all in one. How about it Nikon? :)

1080p on FX would be awesome.

Please also add options
  • external mic
  • external HDD
But it looks like Canon would do this before Nikon. I mean HD Video on full frame.

Certainly 1080p is where it's got to get to, irrespective of whether it's full frame or not, it's still a much larger sensor than any consumer camcorder.

External mic should be dead easy, I already have a hot shoe mounted microphone on my video camera anyway, with no cables, it's all routed through the hotshoe.

External HDD is unnecessary. Even with the high bandwidth that the D90 records at and it certainly doesn't need to be any higher as it's already twice what the highest end AVCHD cameras record at (and triple what most of them do), it's still only 24GB per hour, so with a 32GB card you've got 80 minutes, and that's plenty.

Roland.

And if the D3X has a 2 card slot like the D3, with each capable of holding a 32Gb card(possible?)than that's 160 minutes of video, if you're right.

Just dont understand why we are wanting a HD Video Option in a 35mm Camera.
This is pure gimmick......this is not expected from Nikon.

RED and other companies are making a business out of it. I want this movie mode on my D3. Just think what it would do for action photography, especially if it could operate at 60 fps.

That is what LV brings. The difference is doing it at a little higher res and then saving it into a playable file. Just the ability to use a collection of high end 35mm lenses to capture video is well worth the price.

Please explain what this would do for action PHOTOGRPAHY. I understand what it might do for action VIDEOGRAPHY but I don't see how adding a video function to a still camera is going to help you PHOTOGRPHAHY at all.

Also, I keep seeing comparissons to the RED camera. However, that camera is used on a tripod to make films or music videos. It's not like anyone is using a manual focus video camera to shoot family videos. I just don't see the target audience for a D90 using the video with the camera on a tripod. The fact that so many people are upset about the 5min limitation on shooting time proves they don't understand how to use the feature. Do you think anyone using a "real" video camera for stuff like indie films and music videos is shooting clips longer than 5min? I doubt it.

But if you're just looking for excellent quality video cameras that shoot 60fps, there are dozens of them already.

Next year all entry-levl to midrange, including D400 updating D300, will have some type of video.

Then it'll go into top bodies, maybe D4 around 2010. It doesn't hurt, you have lots of good glass to go with it, likely better than any comparably priced video camera re IQ. Hybrids will eventually replace still-only and video-only cameras, in 10 years maybe.

At entry-level, as soon as contrast AF gets close to phase detecting system, there goes mirror, will have EVILs only. Later all cameras will have EVFs.

Do we know RED are making money at it? We're know they're making PR
from it, but...
I was at a low budget music video the other day and I noticed that the camera they were using wasn't the usual Arri (or something like that). I asked what it was and the camera operator said it was the RED camera. He said it was totally changing the industry and that he thought most music videos would switch to that video camera instead of the film cameras they are currently using.

Of course that's just one guy talking, so I don't know how accurate the information is.

FX is larger than Super 35mm format also (motion picture film). I think it's special.

Some of cameras with Super 35mm format

You know I was so excited when I saw the full size HDMI jack on the side of my D300. When I found it output was not 1080P I was disapointed. Only because 1080P will become the defacto standard in HD. We are already seeing Sat boxes coming out with 1080P and that is what Sony's dreaded Blu Ray scheme is. Since the cameras native resolution is well over the 1080P standard I saw no reason why 1080p output could not be included as a output choice. I then saw the "Mini" HDMI plug and just shook my head. Anothe non standard to deal with. But so is life.

I will tell you that 720p/1080i looks stunning on my in home displays and those of my customers. It even looks excellent on my JVC RS series projector, however 1080p on a LARGE screen allows you to sit that much closer to the screen. For normal display applications showing family and friends pictures off of a CF card 1080i looks great.

i have way too many thoughts on this subject, but for the moment - whatever else please "p" not "i"

Or progressive with interlaced as an option

Interlacing should be consigned to the dustbin of history, just a modest opinion.

... The Red camera is on it's way but it's limitations at the moment are too long to list. It's also already acquired a reputation for poor build quality. And crashing - it can take up to 45 minutes to reboot.

This is what I hear through the grapevine of tv technicians here in the UK. I know several people who have cameras on back order with no real news on when they will get them. Meanwhile rental companies here are buying more DigiBeta cameras to fill the hole - reliable and good quality kit and the post production workflow already in place.
