What's the d300 got that a d90 doesn't?

The difference is there, it's real, and it can be significant. If you can time your shutter release for just the right instant, such as a baseball bat hitting a ball, you might be surprised how you start missing those when switching from 12- to 14-bit.

An easy way to see the delay is to take a flash picture of a cat and a person (without using FV lock). Cats have quick reflexes.

With 12-bit, you usually get eyes closed pictures of cat due to the preflash. Usually not with a person. With 14-bit, I always get closed eyes on a cat, and usually get half-closed eyes with a person. Makes the people look drunk.

14-bit just drove me crazy trying to shoot action subjects.

damn, it means i'm getting too old to notice the lag ! :D

I found it a little hard to believe also that she really wouldn't know the model. My guess is, though, that she wasn't projecting herself as a great artist so much as just having a little fun at the expense of the technolust / geek mentality that permeates PopPhoto and places like this forum.

Regardless, it's hard to miss the point. Every minute spent obsessing over specs and technical minutiae is a minute not spent on making great photos. Which one of those two is more important?

it sounds like a affectation. And an unrealistic one at that.

Presumably she did a little research before she purchased her camera.
Presumably she needs to know what kind of camera in case she ever
needs a lens or accessory. Presumably, she has purchased a second one
as a backup and was able to articulate what she already owned when
she did so. Presumably she isn't blind, so she can see the D80 on the
front every time she picks it up.

But we are supposed to believe that she is such a great artist that
she can't even be bothered to remember what model tool she is using.
