I've searched the threads for this and just wanted a quick confirmation to my question. I saw the TCON 1.7x at Amazon today for $85 and am ready to purchase. Could someone please confirm whether or not I need an adapter for my FZ50 so I don't miss ordering it? One of the threads here said it screws right on the FZ50 but was not sure. If I need an adapter, could someone please speficy the model for me?

Thanks,
CB

--No adapter needed. They both have 55mm threads and fit each other nicely. You can't buy a better teleconvertor for the price. I've been using mine for years. Used ti with the FZ30 before I bought the FZ50. Great teleconvertor!

Just make sure it's the Olympus TCon 17, with no suffix... There is a TCon 17c & that will not work.. The original TCon 17 is a 55mm thread & bolts right on, no-fuss-no-muss... The TCon 17c is a bayonet mount & won't work...

I have the Oly TCON17 for my FZ50 and it works with no additional adapter required - just make sure there are no additional letter suffixes after it that indicate other than 55mm threads. I also have gotten a 77-72 step ring for the unthreaded front. This screws in permanently to the unthreaded front plastic (the metal step ring will cut its own threads - just be careful to have it flat and flush against the front on the lens). This allows me to have 72mm lens cap, UV filter or polarizer on it, and I've added a cylindrical metal 3 inch lens hood.

I recently got a Nikon 1.5x TC15ED tcon. While I prefer the Nikon for its sharpness and contrast, I still feel the TCON17 is a great value at any price under $100. I also got a 58-55 step ring so can mount the TCON17 in front of the Nikon 1.5 for REALLY long reach ... but that's another thread ;-).

Thanks for the quick replies, folks! As I have been searching I ran into the Raynox telephoto but didn't read up on it. I am also buying the Raynox 250 but it seems people here on the forum are partial to the TCONN 17 for telephoto. I'm a newbie so I'll go with the recs of the majority. This forum has been very helpful.

I agree on the Nikon -- I did tests of both the TCON-17 and TC-E15ED, and when comparing the two images side by side (even without pixel peeping) the Nikon is the clear winner. I also typically get a lot more CA and PF with the TCON-17 than I dod the TC-E15ED.

Best of all, the Nikon TC-E15ED was only $45 (used but in new, pristine condition with box, documentation, etc.). I bought my TCON-17 from Olympus eBay for $80, and thought that was a great deal.

I haven't bought the 58-55mm step ring....yet. I was thinking I'd just re-sell my TCON-17 since I always reach for the Nikon now, but stacking the two teleconverters for moon shots, etc., may just be a good enough reason to keep the TCON-17.

Chris (Effzeeone) - I also prefer the IQ of the Nikon - better contrast, sharper images. And it seems to me to the more compact and lighter compared to the TCON17. BUT I find on the FZ50 at 10MP it vignettes dark corners because of the huge rear lens setback, even at full tele. I find myself at 8MP or 5MP both to avoid the vignetting and for the extra reach (mostly for birds and distant nature shots), or cropping in PP.

There was previous thread by someone who solved the setback issues with a hacksaw (!!!), lopping of the rear thread, then the setback and welding the thread back tot eh stump (!!!). Not for me or the faint of heart.

Be aware that the TCON will give you more chromatic aberration than the bare lens on the FZ50, but that stopping down the aperture to f/5.6 or f/6.3 will improve it dramatically.

Before my TCON broke I tried not to shoot it wide open if I could help it.

Interested in knowing if the tc15ed works with the fz28 as well. I thought I remembered a thread about using the LA3 adaptor for tcons. Haven't ordered the la3 yet, but should receive the fz28 next week.

Don't hurry me--I'm still reading the manual(s)
Nikon N90, 8700, D70, D200, and FZ28 (in the mail?)

I realise this thread is 10 months old now, but I am wondering if you could provide a photo of your "customised" TCON 17 Rich - using the step ring to cut it's own threads on the lens sounds dangerous (at least with my amateurish hands) but very interesting.

are you saying using f/5.6 - f/11 on the FZ50 with the TCON 17 should almost eliminate any CA Entropius?
