I've gotten used to firsts with Olympus. Dust buster and live view to name a couple. I took it for granted that Olympus would be the first maker to stick a movie mode in a DSLR.

Not so. Nikon beat them to it with the D90. From the hands on preview:

"In a world first for D-SLRs, the D90 offers a movie function, allowing you to shoot HD720p (1,280 x 720 pixels), 640 x 424 pixels or 320 x 216 pixels movies at the professional smoothness of 24 frames per second in motion JPEG format. The D90’s sensor, which is much larger than the sensor of a typical camcorder, ensures higher image quality and exceptional low-noise, high ISO sensitivity performance, even during movie shooting. Capturing creative movie clips or the drama of life’s moving moments is further enhanced by the wide selection of incredibly sharp NIKKOR interchangeable lenses that are available, from fisheye to wide-angle to super-telephoto. And Micro NIKKOR lenses bring the magic of extreme close-up imagery to movie making."

To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.

Movie mode. IMHO...so what. I'd use a small ps or a camcorder personally.
I do not want a swiss army knife DSLR...what's next? A cupholder or MP3 player?
For me it's all about the still image.

To say that i'm happy that none of my cameras has a movie mode would be an understatement !

What for ?

Oh well, i guess the forum will be splitted between pro- and against movie mode.

It's an interesting feature, no doubt. But apparently it doesn't do AF while in movie mode, and no mic in connection. Those tweaks alone would give Oly (or panasonic!) plenty of opportunity for a killer implementation.

I'd love to have a movie mode. Put stills together with clips, add some audio. This would be a killer tool for story telling.

Nikon hasn't produced anything. They are simply the first to anounce it at this point.

Feel better?

Who cares!!!

I don't understand the disappointment. I mean, all manufacturers will at one point or another do something. Sounds to me more that you were expecting too much... seems to me Olympus has had to concentrate on other issues much more important for photography than adding video to their cameras.

Convergence of technology cannot be stopped. If one body for multiple functions can be done reasonably well, then there is a big market for it.

Pro grade photographers should have their choice of untarnished dslr bodies, but manufacturers cannot afford to ignore the vast majority of photo and video takers who want convenience.

It seems to me the D90 has a fixed lcd. I am sure the models from Sony and Canon will have at least a swivel lcd.

For me, I will wait patiently for the Olympus model. I hope it will be good.

A movie mode on a serious dSLR would be a BIG turn off for me! More
to go wrong.
Yes I agree - and while we are ranting about that lets also ban Swiss Army Knives too. This entire more than one tool in the same housing is an abomination.

Betcha some wedding photographers are rubbing their hands in glee at this.

....is that a true movie mode that's of any real use to me, that is, one that retains the rez of the still images mode[and in raw], means frame rates at at least 30fps or higher. frame rates that high would make hand held HDR a snap[see the articles on outback photo's site about this technique].

otherwise, i couldn't care less. doing movies with a dslr style camera really doesn't appeal to me. and if you want to use any kind of steady-cam like device [and bogen has a nifty little one that's not too pricey], that live view lcd screen better be articulated ----something nikon and canon haven't seemed to be able to figure out yet. also, better have a mega mega card if you want a movie longer than a few seconds at full rez.

this is mildly interesting future tech that might be more interesting a few years from now. oly's got plenty of time to sort theirs out.

We shouldn't be arrogant. I started out taking 8mm movies in the fiftees, later Super 8, no sound, a few minutes of flickering memory, very expensive. Being able to take high quality sound movie clips with our photo camera at virtually no extra cost and load still is a great and welcome achievement to me.

Most or all of those are pretty poor if you want a movie with an angle of view wider than provided by a 35mm lens. Sure there are some wide converters that get you down to 28mm equivalent.

well when u consider you get some great DOF effects or fisheye and you can use your existing lens lineup(if you have Nikon) what's the problem? We've seen all these arguments before concerning things like liveview, IS, more than 3 AF points, i doubt it's actually adding much in terms of cost to the camera production and after all if you have a cam with this built in you don't have to use it.

I'd be better without this in a camera.

Software works perfectly for this. Keep cameras simple please...

It reminds me of a Canon mockup with some "pizza" and "call spock" buttons.

Oh well, mobile phones have cameras now, i guess in a few years cameras will allow internet browsing and coffee cup holding while waiting for interesting bird behaviour.
