Hi Friends,

I went to the local stores last night and looked at what was available in my price range. Maybe there are others out there which are not in the stores...if so please let me know.

I am looking at something which is fairly easy to use or at least understand, and need it for basic photography, people, events, landmarks etc. I am not a professional. I want something that would last for a few years and produce photos which can be shared electronically and printed out just for personal framing. So I guess clarity is important as well.

My friends, which one of these would you recommend, or anything else within this price range.

a) HP Powershot 812 $500 at best buy/comp usa

b) Sony DSC-S75 $500 at best buy/comp usa

c) Nikon Coolpix - $500 at best buy/comp usa

d) Olympus C3020 - $500 at best buy/comp usa

e) Canon Powershot S30 - $500 at best buy/comp usa

f) Kodak DX4900 - $400 at best buy/comp usa

g) Fuji Fine Pix 2800- $380 at best buy/comp usa

I understand that I can get lower prices online etc. and I surely will look, right now I am just trying to decide on a model.

Thanks a LOT

I'd recommend the Minolta S404. A very good $500 4MP camera with good lens, good P&S and enough manual features that you can use it to learn that on.

It's really popular and selling out everywhere as soon as it gets in stock, so it may be tricky to get hold of. Walmart reportedly have them online, maybe in some stores as well.

Of course, none of these cameras is downright bad , so you can't go very wrong. Compare them a bit, read the reviews, but don't worry too much. Even an old, low MP camera can take pretty good shots with the right technique (although a better camera makes it easier, of course).

Good luck with your camera purchase.

I'd echo TheSwede's remarks here. The S404 is a lot of camera for the money. Most of the other cameras on your list are 3MP cams, the S404 is 4MP, and has just as much flexiblity as the others. You say you are not a 'professional photographer', but you may as well buy something that you can grow into, I believe the S404 would fit the bill as good as any other.

But, as noted below, none of the cams on your list are bad.

UPDATE: Ok So should I then say that the Minolta S404 is the best buy for the under US $500/- price range, given my criteria above?

Thanks
AK

Yes, the S404 is the best way to go in this price range. Actually, add another $200 or so to it's competition and it is still an excellent choice.

I am in the market for a DC but am in need for a longer zoom. S404 is 4x.

Read it's review. It's compares closely (yet a little behind) the Canon G2.

A very smart choice.

Good luck,

Drew,

Ok, so anyone vote AGAINST the Minolta S404? or anyone second/third it etc?.

-Is this a good buy for international use?...e.g. warranty?

Also, since it does appear to be sold in stores, which do you feel is the best/safest bet to purchase it online?

Thanks for helping a newcomer like me

AK

I bought the Sony DSC-S85 and I love it! I paid $590 about two months ago, so I'm sure you'll find a price even lower than I paid. The S85 is the next model to the S75. Why go with the older model? Spring for the S85.

You might want to ask that in the Minolta forum as well, you'll get a lot of opinion, lots of it informed.

Some people will try to tell you the S404 has been discontinued since that seems to be the standard tactic of some dealers who are out of stock to try to make you buy another camera. This is not true.

Minolta provides international warranty.

If you find a deal that looks too good to be true, you can be sure it is. Walmart, B&H and other large, reputable stores are the best way. Some have had good experiences with Ritz. If you find a place you feel you'd want to order from you may want to do a search in these forums to see what people's experiences have been, and maybe post a question about it as well.

Andrew the Oly C2100 UZi is the way to go. It's 2.1 MP but has a 10x optical zoom and a very good lens. $450 at CompUSA and if you go to the Oly forum you'll find lots of people who own two because they're afraid of them being discontinued. Great value for the money.

My 2 cents,
Peter

It is very simple........ Select only from 4MP cameras that Phil has given a high rating.

Then eliminate any camera that do not use Compact Flash cards and AA type batteries. That should leave only two cameras in your price range: the Casio QV-4000 and the Minolta S404.
