Guys and Gals.

I am so tossed on my decision right now. I have always loved the D7 lineup...that goes for the D5 and D7i line as well. I also really like the Fuji S602z. Am I nuts? What is wrong with me? Why would I want a lesser lense with less MP and less resolution? Or is it really less resolution? Can't the Fuji shoot continuous even in Tiff mode? Can I use the RAW format on a Macintosh running OS X?? Do I need or want RAW because of this?

I don't know what to do here, other than buy them both and return one a week later. Can I do that?

I really don't see the big issue with noise. Actually, I do. But in deep blue skies and see it on the D7i, D7, D5, F707, S602z, and every other camera...save for maybe the D30 and D60...but I don't have that much money.

The one picture that really bothers me is sample #12 from the D7i samples. The boy with the mime (I think it is a mime). Anyway...the whole picture looks good to my eye except for the back of the boy's neck...what happened there? Does he have freckles?

anyone?

WTF?

Or a bad skin condition?:(

The thing that blew it for me on the Fuji was the barrel distortion at wide angle, chroma and what the noise reduction does to edges and surfaces which look fake to me (cylindrical objects look very two dimensional possibly because of aggressive shadow noise reduction)

I dont often use the full 28mm on the D7i but at 38mm its got almost no distortion and very sharp edges - and I use the 38 - 100 mm range all the time. Definately the len's sweetspot.

I can live with the noise - I would use NI for large prints (A3+) but I would with any of the current 5mp prosumers. At A4 the noise is not visible. Its also highly specific and does not seem to affect every print. In some cases it adds a dash of photographic authenticity to a shot - they look so much like film!

And the external controls are the business!

The Fuji would make an excellent stand in Videocam though!

hey watch your language pal..........it's not like we all just sit here at the puter all day to give you an answer...........and besides, if there is an answer, it might be that the person who may take the time to answer your question is putting his/her thoughts together.........until then....................

Welllll... I'm not sure that anyone can tell you what to do; they aren't you. It sounds like you would have fun with either camera. Each has advantages and only you can decide what you care about. For example, it sounds like the Fuji has a better movie mode... do you care about that? The D7i can make huge time lapse movies, would that be fun? I don't know, it all depends on what you like to do.

I definitely would not get hung up on one single picture; look at lots of shots from both cameras. Here are some links to our photo contests with the Minolta for some samples...

I'm sure that there are plenty of Fuji samples out there too.

If you can't decide, get the cheapest one! You will probably want a new camera next year anyway. Bryan

WTF?

To everyone here...sorry about the language....the WTF? has been my signature on this forum for the past 4 years....usually I remember to delete it before posting...but sometimes I forget. It was not directed at anyone here.

As for my needs...I would like to be able to have an occassional 11x14 made. I think that would be cool. I don't think the Fuji will allow me to do that.

One question I had that maybe I'll have to wait on (for someone who knows Mac) was regarding the RAW format. Is it OS X compatible?

As far as my previous bump, sorry for that...my post was already at the bottom of the viewable page when I did that...even though it was only a few minutes after I posted...I wanted to be sure that someone saw it...please do not be angry at me for that.

I guess I do need to go and play. But by the time I find either of these cameras in stores, I'm going to need one of them. I think I will have to front the cost of both and return one...I just don't see any other way.

Thanks again guys...and sorry.

Sam

You can do more with the D7i but the Fuji is substantially cheaper and a good camera.
You pays your money and you take your......

The DIVU software that comes with the camera is what is normally used for handling images in RAW mde. Visit this page on the Minolta USA Web site to check whether DIVU will run on your Macintosh:

Well, Larry...that is a big NOPE! Only will work in 9 through 9.2.2....no OS X. Hmmm that is a shame...Fuji S602z looking better by the minute. I don't really want to go that far though....bother, bother.
