All you PhotoSIGers

No big deal Uly, I guess if points are being made in my post I think they are related to me in some way. I think I'm just a little raw with this pSIG thing because it was so much fun for me and now it's getting ruined.

My apologies if I was over-reacting.
What's got you so riled up here? I wasn't even talking about your
initial post. Don't go looking for people to disagree with you.

I was referring to an entirely different line of thought based on
Andreas' post rather than anything to do with your own. Most folks
are aware of what goes on in the photosig voting system. It might
have been a poor attempt on my part, but it was meant as
satirization of both photosig and of Cyber-shot users.

I'm sorry if I touched a sensitive nerve. :-
I guess it's okay for some people to decide what is the proper
thing to post on here based on how long they have been hanging
around. The rest of us bumble along like idiots trying to enjoy
actual photography and learn from one another by looking at photos.
When I figure out a clever way to hack into my camera with a hex
key, add a few rubber bands and some duct tape, and get my camera
to make me a coffee, I'll post the details right here and become a
big hero.

I doubt that this type of post is exactly what Andreas is talking about.

He's not squashing the rights of posting so much as trying to help us to see that we take the pictures for OUR benefit more than we do for anything else.

Had a feeling he'd be misunderstood here. And his English this time was much better than usual. ;-)
I use photosig as a Gallery (fed up to post pictures in both
PhotoSIG and Pbase).

And when I want to share a picture with STFers, then I post the
link to photoSIG ...
Well to be frank with you, I got very limited points from STFers
for my few popular shots ... posting for the link here or not ...
Hi AVB,

And what about those notification threads here in the STF? Kinda of
the same isn't it?

Sometimes i have the desire to jump in there and give 3 thumbs
down just for this kind of promotion but then i see it like Kenny.
However, if you are serious about your photography you should go to
photo.net or photocritique.net.

Andreas

It's OK. You know how forums are. They kind of bend and turn and wind around and away from what the original topic might have been. That's what's happened here, it would seem.

heheheh... whatever the case, there are a LOT of strong opinions about photosig, that's for sure. :-)

Hi Ulysses,
And what about those notification threads here in the STF?
You notice those?
STF mostly has a great entertaining value...
However, if you are serious about your photography you should go to
photo.net or photocritique.net.
Heheheh... Sony users? At photo.net? Have you seen many over there?
There are a lot of wonderful (and high rated) photos taken with prosumer cameras over there.

Andreas

your right David. the posting level at photosig has gone ballistic. in 4 hours my last post went back 12 pages. i try to go to every notice of a post at photosig...well, ever since the common posting thread went up anyway. and on others i see listed too. i try to give an honest opinion reguardless if i'm gonna get a negative hit. because the pics fly by so fast i'd be happy to look at any you, or any body else want to bring to my attention. its just too hard to view back 10 or 20 pages 3 or 4 times a day. and i dont think this is the same as the cliques that automatically give 3 thumbs up to every pic their group posts. i sincerely want the input..even if there were no points given..but if there wernt any points, the viewership would drop dramitically. people want recognition for their work and honest tips for improvement. i think the suggestions iv'e gotten here and at photosig have helped me a lot. i want to return the favor and continue to get the good input.

you pay for what you get, but you don't always get what you paid for.

I thought you might like to know that there are a lot of people on
the photoSIG site who have agreements with one another to bump up
eachothers scores. So when you see a so-so shot that is really no
better than yours with a score of 150, now you know why. So in
other words, don't be discouraged that your work isn't as good as
other people's and be happy that you aren't that superficial.

Ask three photographers their opinion on a particular photograph and you will get three different answers. Although in my younger days I have won a few contests, I no longer enter for the above reason. Look at the photos, enjoy them and forget about what other people think. Enjoy..

I've only been on photosig for a very short time, but I've already received these same benefits as erichocinc lists.

I think it is also interesting to compare myself to myself. I think it is somewhat telling to see what photos have an immediate impact and get viewed and what just slips away unnoticed. It helps me do some self-editing and forces me to really think about why I like a photo before I post it.

It is also a useful place to post images and create a gallery of what you think is your best work. I'm disturbed that some of you think that posting links to there is only to boost ratings. Maybe people are just trying to share something that is special to them.

I've gotten several positive things from PhotoSIG.

1. Some useful critiques of my work (lots of chaff, but the
kernels of wheat are worth it)

2. In writing over 1,000 critiques, with about 90% offering some
positive suggstion for improvement, I have learned a whole lot
about what constitutes excellence... and hope to build that into my
own work. The act of voicing what you think forces you to look
much more closely, and learn from doing it.

3. The chance to see some truly spectacular photographs.

4. The opportunity to speculate at length on what looney-tunes
principles govern who critiques what and how well it does. There
just isn't a lot of rhyme or reason to it, so far as i can see.
Which leaves me not worrying about it, just looking for those
critiques where the critic has something insightful or useful to
say.

All that said, there's a lot of ego swarming around that or any
site where one's heart is in one's work.... we all SAY we want to
learn, and many of us do, but it wouldn't be human of us not to
like those points, too...

For the public service announcement! I wondered what was up with some photos getting so many points when other perfectly equal photos get passed by.

I joined photoSig for a reality check, and since I don't take criticism well at all, I had to step back and try to understand what the critiques were saying. I think I've finally developed a slightly thicker skin and the critiques that are well thought out have been a very helpful learning tool.

Since I'm not part of any voting clique I know the votes I get are "real" and if one photo reaches over 20 points I know it's a decent one.

I'm just sad that some of my personal favorites have to get moved to my "least voted for" portfolio, LOL!

I understand why you posted this vote scheme, and it can be very discouraging for a new photographer who's photos get unnoticed or seem to garner not many votes.

I understand there was some sort of disagreement among members at photo.net who left that site and went to photosig instead, this sort of upset the balance of photosig.

I know you read the general forum as I've seen you post there and it seems the same sorts of disagreements, complaints, or whinning show up in any large group, photosig is not an exception.

Anyway I hope the new photographers new to photosig don't get too discouraged and keep clicking away at their hobby.

... as far as you know. :)

I love the 'paranoid angle'.
