Do you format your CF card each time?

Card was pre-formatted. I have never re-formatted it (about 2000 shots so far). Never re-formatted any of my SD cards either (P&S). Never had any problems.

I put the card in the computer's multi-media slot, Adobe fires-up automatically, pulls the JPEGs, then asks if I want to delete them (I say "yes").

I have done this for the past 4 years (P&S w/SD cards and now CF cards).

Have never formatted any card.

Have never had a problem.

Barring a failure of the card itself or a PC problem, you will not lose data. Formatting the CF card in your camera will not prevent either of these events. Problems are caused by card failures, counterfeit eBay cards, camera problems and removing a card from a PC or camera when the card is in use. Formatting the card in the camera will not prevent failures or hamfisted events.

If you transfer and delete files on your own or use a trusted program, they all use the same operating system facilities to do the work. If an image is deleted by error, there are cheap programs to recover them, if you don't write (transfer to or take pictures) to the card you can be very certain of recovery. My PC won't experience a power failure, these days a UPS is cheap.

Deleting files from your card in your computer causes no problems and frees space from the directory map without deleting the data sectors, which is why they can be recovered. If you delete all the files then there is no fragmenting that requires a reformatting. Formatting in the camera creates a folder structure that your camera expects. Many cameras will create this automatically if it is not already there.

IMO this thread is filled with more FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) than fact. But if reformatting your card after every save to PC makes you feel any better, no problem, it only takes a few moments.

And why did this rattle your cage? If you didn't like it, you could have ignored this and instead have perused a cat picture thread.
