BAD APPLE story...the company really stinks..re DVD burner

Greetings and thanks to all that replied to my original post. I think all of your posts were an attempt to be helpfull. I had posted right after getting off with a really nasty and belittling individual at Apple who had no respect for me as a long time customer. I really dont want to change as several have surmised, but I am very upset with Apple...I cant blame Lacie for this..Apple doesnt care to produce an easy piece of software to allow me to use any external DvD burner to burn a Movie no matter whose burner we talk about..I did my research on this...they do this to force the sale of a Mac with a internal DVD burner...My main need is to burn data, but I would greatly like to burn a Movie for the grandparents..My computer was bought in March and comes with IDVD. They will only create the software if enough people like me get upset and complain. My local and very knowledgable Mac autherized dealer and MAC-G_D Says Apple is 100% to blame for this and they clearly have this stated motive........Thought this kind of company thinking was very relevent to a forum of professionals talking digital photography which requires a computer and a platform and a company to stand behing it. I am not giving up quite yet , but am still quite pissed off..Thanks all again and much regards..Howie
I have an old Mac 8500, a one year old imac and a 4 month old
Titanium G4 in my study..I bought a Lacie DVD burner mainly to
archive my D1X Photos.

What really upsets me is the fact that I cant use IDVD which is in
my new portable to burn an external DVD..Thus unless I invest
another 1000$ for a Apple Pro vidio software program Im out of luck
unless I buy another new Mac with internal DVD burner...It seems
the pro program supports exernal DVD burning where as the IDVD does
not....The Lacie burner is the identical drive thats in the Mac.

My local Mac dealer says Apple does this just to force the new
hardware buy..this is the kind of customer neglect that had gotten
Apple into hot water. He is also quite upset about this whole deal.

I have been a Mac person since forever, but am so pissed off about
this Im thinking to go PC and so should everyone on the planet!!!!

If I buy a cheap PC I can use the Included software with the DVD
burner and burn a vidio DVD........The customer service people were
very very arrogent and would not offer me any solution other then
to buy a Mac with a internal hard drive or buy the 1000$ pro
program......HELLLLLLLLLLLLp Howie

If everyone could call Apple and complain about this they would be
forced to write the simple program to allow the Mac to use IVidio
to burn a vidio onto an external DVD burner....but how many of us
are left to even care about this..soon there will be at least one
less where I live.....Thanks for listening and sorry if its a bit
off the topic, but all pro photographers should be aware of the
snake-like marketing going on at Apple........Cheers

Howard, I understand some of yourfrustrations, but I agreewith one of the first postswhich said Lacie is really the responsible party here, not apple. I have been a mac user for along time, although the professional photography studio I work at uses all PC's. SoI have worked intensively with both systems. I alway's new I liked mac better but never really new why. Once I started working with PC's I swore I would make the switch. PC's are soomuch more 'afforable'. Now that I have spent the last three years at thisstudio processing all of myjobs on a PC, I would never switch. Buying a "cheap" PC is just that. I can't begin to tell you how often these things need partsreplaced, or simply just stop working. Between motherboards getting fried, or hard drives that fail, it's a fishmarket of part around this place. With all the wasted time, parts and maintance on these computer's they could have bought twotop end g4's. I Guess I have learned there is something to be said for a quality product. You get what you pay for in life. Take it from my experience, every PC user would switch if they could experience the difference.

Eric,

There is a difference between a CHEAP PC and a affordable PC. I have two such beasts. One is a Dell which I've added memory to, changed HDs and it still rocks. Nothing has died since I got it Feb 2000.

The other started life as an Acer Pentium 75. It currently is a P233 (yup that old) and the only original Acer parts is the floppy and the case. Everything else is at least 4+ years old, save for some memory which got upgraded last year.

My point: Buy quality and it will work and serve for a long time. Buy cheap and you (the buyer in this case) will continue to throw good money after bad trying to make it work.

My only complaint with Apple is that it is a closed system which leads to high prices for what I could get. That and software prices are high also because of Apple's market share.

Yet I would never advocate anyone switch from one platform to another unless they wanted to. I like what I have, which is one Windows 2K box and two Linux boxes. They meet my needs. Someone else might be using BeOS. Each to their own. :)

Take care,

Why don't you just buy Toast Titanium Pro for $70. It'll burn everything from DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-RW, CD-R, multisession, ISO9660, Mac, PC, etc. You name it and it'll burn it. I really don't see the problem that you're having. You can even burn DVD movies with Toast without the use of iDVD-you just need something to encode your video into MPEG-2 and off you go. You can also make VideoCD's. So there's not need to go out and purchase a new Mac or tell Apple they suck. And BTW, it also runs great under OSX.

LOL!
Way to go, Mike!
You can get a DELL for $500 or even less. It seems cheaper than
getting your current Mac to get the job done. Perhaps you'll like
it in the PC world. I would recomend uninstalling whatever
Microsoft OS you get and putting Linux on that PC. Isn't Mac's
newest OS based on a Linux core? If so you'll feel right at home
(maybe) :)
Ok, so you're recommending someone buy a Dell PC for $500, install
Linux on it, and then use it to burn DVDs. I can understand the
buying of a Dell. Michael Dell is a smart guy, who figured out how
to make an excellent business in retail computers, and $500 for a
Dell goes quite far today. They are good computers. However, what
this man needs is
headaches. Linux is a pain in the ass. No offense to the original
poster, but if he went to the extent to rant and rave about his DVD
software that came with his Mac not working because he didn't find
drivers for the external DVD burner he ordered, or didn't find
software that was compatible. I don't think he has the computer
savy required to recompile a linux kernel to make it so his sound
card will work. Not to mention the bloody process of making a
decision of which vendor to go with and what RPMs to install.

Just because some company makes two similar products doesn't mean
they work the same way... And to top it all off, the original
poster blames Apple!

Now, you suggest this guy install the worlds cheapest, hardest to
use software on a $500 box which comes with software which will do
what he wants already (all he needs is hardware). So that he can
remove the software he paid for so that he can install Linux! And
THEN, to top it all off, you write that OS X is based on Linux. OS
X is based on BSD Unix. BSD is the Berkeley System Distribution of
Unix, and is as different from Linux as Macintosh is from Windows.
In fact, ALL of these OSes are POSIX compliant, and that is the
only similarity.

Now, I usually don't make an ass out of myself in the Pro forum,
but this is the absolute dumbest thread I have ever read on this
site. It doesn't belong in the Pro Forum at all. Sometimes I wonder
where the quality and relevance of these forums goes to, and I know
that Phil is watching and removing trash.
