What's Olympus bringing out at Photokina?

An announced forthcoming E-5 seems possible. Faster, smarter, higher MP, refined camera with E-3 VF, body, and basic controls. That will boost up the price of the flagship to make room for a tweener. I don't expect they would deliver this one this year however--but mockups and hype yes.

I think a more traditional looking E-330 update would work for a tweener (ala Sony A350 concept done right). Weather sealed, A/B live view, E-3 or E-5 sensor. Flip screen. SD for second slot (please!) Video feed off the A mode sensor. Hey why not? The small sensor is a digicam sensor anyhow. (This is a camera I want). $999.

E-520 stays.

Micro 4/3rds may take over for the E-4xx line.

Cheerio,
Seth

practical, cheap and available? (Hate to spoil your fun, tho).

I bought a right angle viewer with 2x "shift" for $70 from Amazon for my Pentax K10D - and it makes a tremendous difference.

That's a real question, I'm not following...

After a year I'd have expected the price to drop by around 15%, is that what has happened?

I've never thought Oly can bring out a camera much above the E3 because:

1) People won't pay big money for a small sensor. Although, perversely, now big sensors are cheaper and more common, that snobbery may be going.

2) Oly simply won't sell enough kit to justify the massive investment required to build the chipset for a 10FPS camera, and that is what they "need" if they want a high end camera.

Hi,

It may be what you (and other enthusiasts (including myself)) want, but Oly is already viewed as a niche camera line. but what you are asking for is unlkely to be attractive to the marketplace and therefore result in a higher cost to produce due to very low volume.

Somehow I do not see a camera w/o liveview or flash being offered in a market between the 520 & E3 (especialy with having weathersealing (and without it, it is virtually a 420).

I too. would buy an E1n with a 10mp Kodak CCD sensor in a heartbeat, with the only other change being a higher data handling rate and fixed 2.5-3" screen, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hi Louis

This could easily be the case taking into account the E510/410 was updated. Will be great to see a E3 V2 with a few more updates.....

If anything like the E520 then it could be a killer...

Best

I believe that the E3 started out at 1699USD now you can get it for 1350USD at Cametta brand new body only. A recent poster just scored a mint E3 for 1050USD. Now this may be an attempt to aline it more with the price point of the Cannon 40D and the Pentax D20 as aposed to the Nikon D300 whose price point has barely budged. And the price slide seems to be ongoing with some even predicting sub $1000 by November. If that is the case, at what price point will the tweener come in at $799?

Or, DC the E3 use the parts in the tweener and come out with the E4 to continue to compete with the new offering from Cannon (14mgp 50D?). Also there was a post some time back in the spring that suggested that Oly had perfected a way to increase the DR by merging multiple frames taken hundreds of a second apart.

This may be vaporware, but Oly should know that they cannot continue the product cycle of the past if they hope to compete and not relegated to the nitch or also ran status.

The one thing that I love about OLY is that they love to innovate, now they have to compete and I find it exciting!.

165 to 1350 in a year as unusual.

A revised (but not more upmarket) E3 is certainly possible (in my opinion), but I don't think they current prices are a clue one way or the other.

This is where the e-3 was first demonstrated in person with full working body and 12-60 lens attached, quite a low-profile event for olympus i'd say because after me and a few others shared our experience here nobody believed us!

several of us who were posted their impressions. mine was that the new zoom speed was startling, which several others agreed with.

this show flies under the radar, for some reason. having attended now, can't figure out why. hope to be back this fall.

Hrm I don't understand why either since it's in a city that isn't anywhere near low-profile either. Probably has to do with marketing?

If you ever see a company bringing out a consumer electronics product in Jan/Feb, you know they blew the schedule and missed Xmas
You forget that the PMA show is every year around February. And that
is a pretty big announcement moment - the biggest in the year (at
least certainly in the years without Photokina)!
Well, I guess I should have been a bit more careful in my wording, like "bringing out into the shops", stuff announced at PMA normally hits the street in the late spring/summer timeframe (or later). Just in time for the second big camera buying season, the summar vacation season!

LOL, I will second that one! pleeeze
HG
... just the new sensor ( I am sure Panny has developed a 12MP sensor
for fotokina ) and all the electronic features of the E-520, and a AF
sensor which works better with the 14-35
I would be mighty upset if they cannot get the 14-35 to work properly
with the E-3.
Absolutely, not the only one.

Love f2 Oly lens wide open ... 14-35mm f2, & a 50mm f2+1.4TC is my fav. combo on two 'IS' oly bodys.

Actually a new (properly working) version of 14-35SWD will be
announced. The old one will be sold out for $490.
