I would like to give away the following:

Pentax SMC-A 135mm f2.8, in an original Pentax hard lens case.

I have had this lens since new - about 1985. Not a stellar performer, but OK if stopped down a little. Note that, as an A-series lens, all auto exposure functions will work, but focus is manual. Has a built-in slide in/out hood.

I don't use this lens now, and would be happy to give it to anyone who could make good use of it. I would prefer to see it go to someone in need - a full-time student; someone not financially well-off; someone living where access to equipment may be limited. I will meet reasonable postage costs to anywhere, but I get to decide what is reasonable! (Otherwise, I may request a contribution).

If interested, feel free to email me. Please outline your circumstances, and how you might benefit. I'll consider any submissions over the next day or so. I won't reply to emails, but will advise the "winner" by email, and also post the outcome back here.

In return, you need to post (if possible) a few shots taken using the lens.

Paul

Paul, your timing is impeccable.

just two weeks ago, I bought the f3.5 135 M off ebay.

What you are doing is wonderful. When the dust in my life settles, I will have to consider passing some of my lenses on in the same way.

I assume that you are not the Paul Hunt in these videos, but get asked about him a lot during every Olympics season:

This is a wonderful gesture by you, Paul.

The A135 f2.8 is actually a very nice performer once stopped down and not too bad at the wider apertures. Here is a shot for the prosepctive recipient that shows that it is a very good performer. Shot at f6.3 with the *istD and taken and on a tripod a few years ago:

We need more people like you on this planet Paul. It could be what saves our civilization.

That's cool- I've always liked mine, I took this this morning with the one I have

I've got a drawer full of old Pentax lenses I value but don't use. At least not often. I've learned a lot from them. But the learning curve is flattening rapidly with the ones I have.

Perhaps we could develop this idea:
  • Someone lists a lens with negligible resale value - say nil to $25 or ?.
  • Others could ask to use it for a while for the nominal cost of mailing. (International cost issues?)
  • Rule could be you either put it back into circulation within a short/specified period based on desirability/waiting list or replace it in circulation with a lens of equal or greater value. Or maybe you'd have to offer up a lens or project to get one? (I certainly wouldn't expect to see high value lenses on the offer list!)
There could be a LOT of lens comparison/learning curve stuff floating around out there. Some energetic/curious individual could access a few lenses that no one person would ever get together otherwise and offer everyone a synopsis of their opinion/comparisons. (Imagine how envious other forums would be. ;-) )

The potential value of, and respect for, older lenses might increase if more newcomers had access to those lenses so they could learn how to use and appreciate them. Of course this could keep a lot of us busy with HELP needed requests but new comers become old timers too.

Just imagine the arguments (pardon me, discussions) over who's *istD or K20 deals best with an SMC A2.0/50mm. Pentax ought'a sponsor this idea just to take the heat off the AF rants!

Just a quick bump for the time-zone challenged on the other side of the globe.

I've had a few expressions of interest - will reach a decision tomorrow.

As a certified hoarder, I have kept (and will pass on) the instruction booklet (complete with errata) and the plastic carry strap (still wrapped) for the case. The lens, as far as I can see, is in perfect condition.

Thanks, Lance, for posting the sample shot.

Actually I think that's a great idea! I have a friend participating in a litterature forum and they have a box of books traveling around the world, and each recipient can take anything they want as long as they replace the books with others, so the box remains full.

It could not work the same way with lenses (a box full of lenses would be a nightmare to insure) but a lens trade program would be a good idea to let people experiment, and eventually fill gaps in their lineups.

I think anyone with unused lenses might gain something by participating.

Let's see how this evolves...

Someone took the time to post images. Why not take the time to comment?

I'd be happy just to find some local people I could get together with and spend a day playing with each other's lenses..

Ditto what the others have said, very nice of you Paul! Here's another example shot from this lens. I think it's a great performer, especially for the price!

This was from the K100D and the SMC-A 135/2.8 at a George Benson concert.

These 135's are great bargains, and I've found this lens to be nice, despite the less than glowing reviews.

Even bad photography can be fun :)

Wow, very cool! Wished I seen it sooner, I just 1/2 hour ago won a 135 F2.5 off ebay ($48 shipped).... Just got my first DSLR (K200D) and I never bought any primes back in the 80's when I got my Super Program....so I'm on the hunt for some cheap ones. Have found myself in some challenging shooting positions recently (mostly for the wife - she's a following of a popular authors book signings/concerts etc) where such lenses will help a lot! I lost out on 50mm F1.7 "A" last night that I really wanted...but it went higher then I should spend...so another time!

Props to a good guy!

Cheers!

I've emailed the "winner" - will report back with user's name if I get the OK.

Thanks everyone for your interest.

Paul

The lens has gone to a relatively new forum member and new photographer, SCWahine.

This user's circumstances convinced me that the lens would be well used and appreciated. In the interest of confidentiality, however, I won't divulge any further details.

Hopefully, SCWahine will feel encouraged to post some shots soon!

My apologies to those who missed out this time.

Regards, Paul
