I just got my 7i yesterday and it is amazing.

I installed DIVU, when i select the pics to be loaded (say 10 or so, i'm using super fine, it also does the same thing using fine (1 - 2 mb pics)) it says it's loading and totally uses all the CPU resources and takes 30+ minites to show the thumbnails. During this time I cannot use my system for anything else. I uninstalled and reinstalled DIVU and the same thing happens. I have a 1.33 mhz cpu, 512mb ram, so it's fast enough. Running XP PRO, and GO BACK 3.0. Am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help

It looks like you are accessing the photos in the camera with DIVU. This is very sllow because all the information has to go through the USB connection.

I suggest you to copy first the pics from the camera to some folder in your Hard Disk, then disconnect the camera and work the photos in the HD, you'll be amazed the change of speed. And if you use DIVU for browsing images you'll even find faster/better IrfanView (www.irfanview.com , freeware) or ACDSEE (www.acdsystems.com, this one not free) or other thumbnailing programs (search the forum for others image browsers)

Juan

Hi Les

I always copy my pictures to my HD before using DIVU (I don't use it very often) and it is still painfully slow.

My machine is an Athlon 1800+, 512MB PC2100, 100GB ATA100 HD so hardware isn't an issue and I also run XP pro.

Generally speaking as the colour space from the 7i is pretty close to sRGB for anything other than RAW (I think even Super-fine pictures are the same) I'd avoid DIVU all together .

XP works extremely well as a browser anyway so browsing shouldn't be a problem (but you probably already know that).

Hello,

Yes it is 1.33Ghz - 000PS. The pics are already on my hard drv, and it they still load really really slow with DIVU. The HDD hits constently when the pics are TRYING to load. I've tried the Nikonview that was talked about on this forum and that worked fine. If I just click on the pic.jpg while still in the explorer window it opens right away. I just does not work with DIVU.
I'm stumped.

Thanks
Les
I have a 1.33 mhz cpu
I hope thats 1.33GHz :D

Seriously, as Juan suggested, save your images to HDD first, then
use DIVU. You might want to get a USB or a Firewire card reader as
well as they are much faster then the camera-> pc transfer.

Hello Russell.

Thanks for the advice. So, I only need to use DIVU if I take pics in RAW?

I am going to buy MS Picture IT 2002 (it's cheap, and some people say it works pretty good.) to crop and edit my pics. I'm just getting started in the digital arena. I think PS 7.0 is to costly and a long learning curve at the monent. The 7i manual reads like a novel -- just taking my time.

I have been reading this forum for a couple of months now and have learnt a lot from all of you.

thanks

Les:

I have DIVU loaded, but rarely use it. I mostly use After Shot, which started out life as Image Expert 2000. It does many of the things DIVU does, and some better. I mainly use it as a browser window in conjunction with Photoshop 6. (I drag the images I want into PS...)

After Shot scans the image folder to build a thumbnail layout of the images. Thereafter, every time that folder is opened, it's very fast, as the preview is kept on disk.

All of these packages have their pluses and minuses. Since I don't shoot Minolta RAW yet, I don't really have a need for DIVU, but it's nice it's there for when I do.

Les, Check out Paint Shop Pro ( http://www.jasc.com/products/psp/ ) before you buy Picture IT. It's a very good editor and far cheaper then PS. Also look into ThumbsPlus ( http://www.cerious.com/ ). Its a great little program for thumbnails with additional features.

Yes apparently only RAW really needs you to use DIVU.

I use Photoshop Elements for my photo editing and I also have Paint Shop Pro both are great applications. PSP is a little easier to use but loses the EXIF information on any jpegs you edit where PSE handles the EXIF information properly but is not quite as easy to use. I agree that Photoshop is way too expensive for anyone except pros.

While I would agree that Photoshop is expensive, it's well worth the $585 price. Also, many people have a copy of Photoshop LE that came with a digicam of scanner. Upgrading from that is a lot cheaper.

Photoshop does somethings and has some features that just aren't available elsewhere.

Also, If you're thinking of using Paint Shop Pro, check out JASC's After Shot for use as a browser. I think it's a better package than Thumbs Plus, and MIGHT integrate better with PSP.

I use Microsoft Picture It 2002 to email my fine resolution pictures. It only takes a few minutes to set up your picture and you don't have to resize it yourself...just use the custom setting and put in the parameters you want. I love it. If I want to save a copy I can do that too. If you want to save your exit information, however, don't use it to modify your original photo. I also use MS Picture It 2002 to print some awesome looking pictures. I have PhotoShop Ver 6.01 but for quick emailing, Picture It works great. I have no problem loading pictures into DIVU because I use a card reader. It also depends on how many pictures you are trying to load. It will load all pictures on your CF card and if you have a huge one, it will take time. I have a 256 Lexar 12x card and it holds 90 fine resolution pictures. It takes about 60 to 90 seconds to transfer.

Hi,

I just want add to some of the responses to your post regarding DIVU. I've got PSP 7 Anniversary Edition. was debating between it and PS Elements PhotoImpact 7. Since I'm newbie in this area, PSP won based on price: $99 (@ Amazon) - $40 rebate (from Amazon) - $30 rebate (from JASC for upgrade/competitive). Just check the valid dates for those rebates if you deside to go with PSP.

This may be what is causing your pics to load so slow in DIVU
