Wahey!

After initial fears of this lens having been used more than was said (bought second hand and saved a bucket but there is a lot of lens creep :S ), I am VERY happy with the image quality!

Couple of shots, sorry about the boring subject matter (although ducks are very cool!), both with 40D and 70-300mm at around 300mm, iso 800 (levels post processed).

Good Morning,

That's not a bad lens. Has been called a 'hidden L' lens because of the flourite element it uses. Not L build quality, but sharp & contrasty none the less. As for the lens creep, as long as you have the blank warranty card, you can send it to Canon for repair, without a receipt. Just tell them the lens was a gift, and they will honor the warranty as long as it's within the 12 month period.
Have a good day,
Jim...

Very nice pictures, still can't decide if i should get this or the 70-200 F4 L, non IS model.

I love ducks too! This lens is amazing. I don't see the 70-200 as an alternative. It is too short. Whether IS or not? I would never buy a non-IS!

Regarding your photos. I like your first one most. The effect you have achieved with the water. The surface is great.

You can do it because you believe you can do it. So do it!

Excellent shots. Great detail with nice color. The 70-300 IS is a dandy lens IQ wise. I've always found the 70-200 lens a bit short for nature shots so i prfer the 70-300.

off topic...

Quack Quack, Ducks suck...

Must be hockey season again. Go sharks.

I loved my 70-300mm as well, until I was indoors and it sucked. Really go to me outdoors though. Great duck images btw.

Nice photos, but the 70-200 4is gives a lot better IQ indoors & takes a TC nicely which gives more reach than the 70-300.

How is 280 more reach than 300.

James

It is not 280, if you use a 2TC.

It will not autofocus with a 2x plus the iq is lousy. I notice you have a 70-300do, how is that?

The Do is good, but I tend to grab the 70-200 1st. I had the old 70-300 before I got the Do & it wasn't so great. I have taken some really nice shots with the Do including a little green tree frog that was across a large goldfish pond. I had to do a lot of cropping & it was still acceptable. The 70-200 has a quality about the shots that is exceptional & is better indoors. The shots posted today with the 70-300 were very nice. Good colors & very sharp & detailed.

Wow, a lot of these pictures are making me lean more towards the 70-300 over the 70-200 F4 L. I have a Sigma 70-300 for my telephoto uses right now but from 200-300 i get considerably soft images which is why i want to upgrade to higher quality glass.
