Bad news

that 5D re-evaluated lately. Maybe vendors got nothing from Canon related to FotoKina.
And please, remember also that this is only a conversation.

Well normally they annouce stuff at both PMA and Photokina so it would be surprising if they push everything out to PMA. So I can stick with my 40D for a while longer and hope that Canon comes up with something special. Nikon is rattling the Canon DSLR world recently.

What camera do I have? I rather you look at my photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/gavinz

4 new Canon digital EOS cameras and new lenses will be announced at PMA:
2 x FF EOS digital
One of them must be direct competitor to A800 - $2k
Second must be 1D4
1 x 1.3 crop EOS digital
??? - new kid on the block

A new 300D - direct answer to D300 :)
1 x 1.6 crop EOS digital
2000D -12 months cycle
4 new lenses for Canon EOS cameras
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=19279201
from canon museum: 300/400/500/600L - 1999
1 x digital media storage device
who gives ...
I'll be really disappointed if Canon waits till PMA. I have been
expecting them to announce really good 5D upgrade
Upgrade yes ---> 3D
Update no ---> 7D

but if we don't
hear anything at Photokina, I'll believe that Canon got nothing
serious to offer against new Nikon cameras and upcoming 24 MP Sony,
not even something against 14 MP full weather sealed Pentax K20D
which has been selling around $1000 bucks.
50D?
Canon please: more sophisticated LV in 60D/500D
Nowadays I think Canon really went back to their drawing board and trying to
figure out what they'll offer.
That's exactly what we are seeing now
Anyways; I still hope it won't be that way and this company will
announce something worth to wait at Photokina. I also hope Nikon
announcement on their 24 MP flagship along Sony's announcement. Maybe
that would bring 1DsM3 price down to a more logical number instead of
Might happen if Sony delievers quality.
Will Sony deliever sharp image? No!

Best,
d

...if Canon announced some great products in September, I'd gladly wait another 6 months for their arrival. I can't imagine many folks on this forum needing anything that they haven't already got in their camera bags. If Canon hasn't given you what you need in the last 18 months, you've probably already switched to another brand. Most of this boils down to gear lust.
Hey guys,
I've been one of those who believes Canon will come up with a few
upgrades at Photokina next month. But, this morning (USA) after
talking to my relative in Istanbul/Turkey, I kinda lost faith on that.
My relative, he has no idea about these forums or cameras; but he
works (he is one of the department decision makers) for a company in
Istanbul that purchases a lot of Canon products (specially Canon
printers).
Anyways, that's what I was told (please don't take it wrong, it was
just a conversation and there is nothing guaranteed about this):
New Canon cameras will be available after January 2009. 4 new Canon
digital EOS cameras and new lenses will be announced at PMA:
2 x FF EOS digital
1 x 1.3 crop EOS digital
1 x 1.6 crop EOS digital

I kinda agree - but saying that I do want a new camera - it is not jsut that my existing 5D is not good enough, far from it. But I want a new second body and am waiting to see wht Canon do next. I was impressed with teh pro feature set in the D700, but am not going to switch brand - too much invested in lenses. So I wait patiently for Canon to do a "5D" and produce a camera that fill my every current desire, camera wise.....my wallet is ready :-)

Yeah, my relative in Tananarive (they import a lot of Canon stuff to
Madagascar - 4 EOS camera, 6 lensess and 5 printers so far this year)
said the same. What a coincidence!
Maybe

Such as what, $23.50..? Every 15-year old would like the price of
1Ds3 come down to zero so maybe for ya even $23.50 would be too much.

Now - next time before writing such drivel think about the size of
the crow you'll need to eat if your "information" is incorrect...

Or ... you can stay asleep (in coma, actually), thinking you're the one running and knowing it all.

Thanks.

Ditto.

What is it that Nikon has released in the D3 and D700 that you can't live without in the MKIII and 1DsMKIII or the 5D for that matter.

For me the only real envy is the incredible 12-24 zoom that Nikon has released.

More than new bodies, I would love to see a redo of their wide zooms, to offer the alternative that Nikon does. BUT having said that, I have purchased the Canon 14 II and love it and have had some great results with it.

Completely agree with this. Except that Nikon's zoom is 14-24. We have to resort to the Sigma 12-24 meanwhile for a super wide-angle zoom in this range.

In addition to something equivalent to the Nikon 14-24, the 17-40/4 L could use a makeover. If they'd fix the full-frame corner sharpness at open aperture by releasing a version II it would be fine. However, by adding IS on top they'd have a real killer lens.

If a guys got the itch to spend money, he's gonna spend money ...

Unfortunately, Canon hasn't catered to the 5D upgrade spenders (including myself).

No logic here.

I fixed the fix by getting a neat XSi to tinker with, and go light. (D3 is a bit obvious with a 24-70)

Geez...I thought that people in 2008 don't make such moronic statements anymore. Apparently I was wrong.

Nice blog, BTW. Stil fondly remember my travels (you see...) in the Balkans in the 70s.

Exactly what did he say that makes the fact that he is an American relevant?

Hey, don't worry, I for one appreciate your effort.

What you wrote is interesting at the least. Thanks!

See, that's what I really don't understand about personalities like
you. You and your kind always have to attack for nothing. You sound
like a very unhappy dude.

Again, what I wrote was not 'information'... it was just a
'conversation' and unfortunately I made a mistake and wrote it here
to share just because of the possibility of 'maybe'.

I'll be more than happy to see 'otherwise' and grill the crow with
pleasure.

That is true, but that also explains the problem. Each of these Canon cameras can do part of what the D3 and D700 can. There is a high speed camera with good low light abilities, but not FF and neither allows EF-S lenses. There is a realy good and capable FF with great resolution, but it's too slow and too expensive and doesn't do as well with noise. And then there is the 5D which is decent and FF but is slow and old.

What made the D3 and D700 so successful was the combination of all the features and performance. I think that is where Nikon made a smart choice and Canon didn't provide such a alround camera. Heck Nikon can even sell their camera for a higher price and they still sell like crazy.

I really wish Canon would have focused more on the 5D replacement. I would have stayed. The lack of it opened the way for Nikon's success. Maybe they have been working on something absolutely groubdbreaking which takes them longer.

as it turns out.

If you own one you'll know.
One needs some very direct purpose in buying that lens.
The 17-35 or 16-35 is much more practical
I own this lens and didn't think much about it before I bought it actually. I just wanted a good wide angle for my new D3 and the 14-24 has turned out to be better than I thought. I have been looking at the photos I took with it and it turned out that I use it on the wide end much more than on the long one. So a zoom starting at 16 or 17 would not work as well for me for sure.

I compliment it with a 24-70 so I'm not missing anything. I found in reality I rarely shoot around 20-35 mm.

What is really the most impressive aspect of the 14-24 is it's image quality. It beats both the Canon 14 and 24 prime lenses (both are L-lenses) in resolution. Considering it is a zoom and costs only $1500 that is truly remarkable.
