EVF vs LCD on S3 and S5

I have an S3 and mostly use the EVF, because that helps me hold the camera steady and lets me see it better in strong light. But I find the resolution is too low to tell how well focused it is, and sometimes I can't find the subject - usually a bird.

I tried to find out what the resolution is, but all I can find is the spec for the LCD - 115,000 pixels. What resolution is the EVF?

If the LCD has higher resolution, has anyone had any success using it with a loupe taped over it, etc?

Also, I notice that the S5 has a 207,000 pixel LCD. How many on the EVF?

Incidentally, and perhaps everyone else already knows to do this, my ability to aim and focus the S3 increased dramatically after I discovered that I could increase the brightness of the EVF. This should be the default setting, in my opinion.

I just read here that the EVF brightness will increase if you raise the flash, but haven't been able to try it yet. Is that correct? Even if I've already turned it up myself?

Can't believe no one has any knowledge of this. Does anyone at least know the resolution of the S5's EVF?

I mostly use the LCD screen but you can ask in the S5 forum -

This is from the review of the S5 on this site:

The S5 IS features a small electronic viewfinder (EVF) - essentially a 115,000 pixel 0.33-inch LCD behind a magnifier.

I have an S2 and I have checked out the S5's in the shops and the EVF looks the same as my S2.......VERY COURSE/BAD VIEW.

I also have a Sony H9 and the difference is night and day, I can actually use it to manually focus. Just to balance this, it is no way near as good as an optical view finder but it is completely workable for me.

I didn't see that. I'm disappointed - they increased the LCD resolution but left this as it was. Perhaps this is something they've left for the S6, I think about 4 times this would be a nice improvement.

I used to have an S3 and now an S5. I almost always use the LCD and the one on the S5 is a big improvement over the S3's.

But yes, the EVF in both was disappointing. I only use the EVF on the S5 when I have the 430EX flash attached.

Sometimes you just have to use the EVF and take multiple shots to make sure that you got the correct focus.
