Is survival without stabilized lenses possible???

I like to smoke and eat meat. Could get hit by a bus tomorrow too.
:-)
Yes, I believe if you stop smoking and eating less meat, you'll definitely live longer. Oh, and please don't forget, you'll also live longer when you don't get hit by the bus tomorrow, WBirch... hehehe...

Tell me why you need it, dude.
i need it because at 400mm zoom i can't keep my hands stable enough
to take a steady shot at night at a football game (and no, i can't
take a tripod or monopod into the stands).
What about upping the iso? Going with a larger F stop? I handhold the
Bigma at 500mms often with no problems.... and thats a slow lens at 500mm.

Fix it later because you shot in RAW. I don't use filters and other junk on
the front of my glass too.

Thanks.

I don't use stabilized lenses. I don't use stabilized cameras?
Why does everybody but me require them to take photos these days?
What happened to looking at the scene and deciding what the light level
is, the iso should be used, the aperture and knowing your gear?

Why do you need a stabilized lens (or camera) to take great photos?
This begs the question why you feel the need to be able to choose the ISO? Just go get some ISO 12 film and be happy. No need for interchangeable lenses either.

Strikes me as a very strange question.

Why did they invent the wheel when I was getting along fine just
dragging things along the ground?
It depends. Wooden wheels sucked since the spokes came loose. Bias-ply
often went flat. The newer radials are pretty good tho expensive.

Just out of interest, what can you handhold a 200mm at? With IS I can do 1/6s - could you do that without IS?

Even if you can you should maybe consider those unfortunate enough to be born without the kind of physique that allows this - it's a great help to them.

To be honest, nope. I haven't tried it. Tell me why you need it, dude.
My Bigma and Sigmas and the old-beast Canon DSLR keep getting it done.
Just asking since so many can't live without
A guy on here said his wife and daughter can't shoot steady
pics with a Rebel DSLR because it doesn't have IS. Talk
about spoiled girls.

No, of course not. Neither is AF or AE, and I got along perfectly well without either of them for a long time. I still do, when it suits me.

The technology is available and it's entirely up to you, as an individual, whether you want to use it or not.

I'm thinking about buying a Canon 70-200mm f4, and I really can't afford the IS version, which is expensive in South Africa. I asked my dealer, who is also a professional wildlife photographer, if using higher ISO was a viable alternative. His reply was "Sure. The IS version is great if you can afford it, but it won't stop motion (obviously) and you don't really need it. Wind up the ISO or use a tripod, bean bag, the branch of a tree or whatever". This seems quite sensible.

That's because after you get the early bird special for dinner, you're in bed when everybody else is shooting at ISO 1600 and 1/30s ;)

Cheap shot. Plenty of people who "know their gear" appreciate being able to shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds.

Please spare us from these ridiculous posts. You're either an irascible curmudgeon or a big ole troll. Your thought process is 'I don't need these things...so noone else does either'. Great, now the manufacturers can put all those millions in R&D towards other causes, no need for any more innovation.

By the way, have you figured out why some folks would want or need live view on a DSLR, or are you still scratching your head on that one?

I don't own any either, but they definitely have their place. It really depends on the conditions you shoot in. There are situations when you run out of aperture, run out of iso, and are getting borderline with shutter speeds for handholding. Alternately, there are situations you could get handheld, but you want more DOF. Having 2-3 extra stops to play with is a huge help in these situations. Of course, a monopod would do the same thing, but it is a little less convenient.

.... think of the Sahara desert with no water for 90 days!
It'll be much worse than that.

In fact, can anyone survive without photography? :o

Funny you mention that verve... my water pump was kaput for 24
hours and it was like hell. Try it yourself. You appreciate in-home plumbing
a lot more after you don't have it.

I asked this in 2008. I still don't use any stabilized glass.
