Several people have asked about the "Digital Film-strip" that I have used resently for my Proofwork. Like this one...

Here is a link to a page with both the action and the Template file needed. http://www.matrix-digital.com/e10/related_files.htm

Import the Action and put the Template in a subdirectory called "Digital Film" directly under the "PhotoShop" directory. Mine is in the folowing directory on my computer...

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0\Digital Film

Hope this works for you.

Using Photoshop7, downloaded the file and put it in a "Digital Film"directory. I might be new at this, but how do I get it to work, are actions and templates the same thing?...
Thanks..

Thank you for sharing the template with us. I have downloaded it and have tried it our on a few pictures. I don't know what the action is for, but the template works for me. It is a great border.

Thanks again.

I hope BartB does'nt mind but I modified the film strip for those E-20 users that want to use the same effect. Its rather easy and if you want to do it yourself try this:

1. Make sure you have the action and layer as he described in the Digital Film folder and make sure you have it loaded into PS and working. One quirk that took me a min to figure out was it was asking for the template when it asks for a file to open (duh!).

2. Dont run any of the actions when you have PS open, open up the template.psd and you'll notice 2 layers now zoom in towards the bottom of the slide and you'll see the > > E-10 along the bottom. The text is'nt directly editable so you have to make the "2" to put instead of the one.

3. I found the most effective (unless BartB tells us what font he used) was Tahoma with Bold @ 11.5 points and Smooth anti-aliasing NO faux bold and NO italics/faux italics. Once you've got the "2" place it over the "1" and make a new layer based off the "2" what this does is it makes it looks even more bold if you make the "2" two times.

4. At this point when you have the 2 layers of "2" right on top of eachother you can then use the eyelid in the layers window and hide the background and the film strip leaving the 2 layers of "2". Now try doing a Layer > Merge Visable. After that you're almost there now go back to the layers and make sure the eyelids are visable (showing the layers) and now goto the layers window and RIGHT-CLICK on the "2" layer and select duplicate layer and hit ENTER. Now you have another "2" layer so you can go ahead and put that over the second "1" on the lower right side of the strip.

5. Finally for the finishing touch make a sqare box on the "film strip" layer where the "1" in the E-10 is and hit delete. Dont get freaked out if you see a shadow over the spot you deleted just select a brush and black as the foreground color and paint over that selection box. Do the same for the other "1" on the other side and you're pretty much set. You MAY want to flatten the two "2" layers into the film strip layer for this template to work and DO NOT flatten the layers till you see 1 single layer keep the film strip layer and the background seperate.

Hope this helps if Bart is willing I can send him the E-20 ver and let him post it up for all of you.

Papa-T

I use Elements, so yes, it works. I don't know if I am using it as intended. I open the template and move my picture on top the template. Save or flatten as desired etc. I am curious as to how to use the action. Maybe the action saves some steps in PS 6 or 7????

just finished your process to change the e-10 to e-20 on the film strip, worked for me. Thanks It will get alot of use now it has the right camera symbol on the strip. Thanks to yourself and BartB for sharing the info.

I don't know what to do with the Oly e-10 digital film.atn file, but I can walk you through the template.psd file.

Double click the template.psd. Your elements should open with a white background with the film strip on top and bottom. Open up your choice of pictures that you want to use and highlight the move command. On my copy of elements it is on the top right of my tools. Then click on your picture and move it on top of the template. You can now save your new file. Flatten the image if you want to save it as a jpeg. To flatten an image go to Layer, then select flatten image.

Let us know how this works for you.

Haynes

Hi all,

Seems to be a lot of folks that are a little confused about the Action file Vs. the Template file...

The Action File.. (ATN) is a recorded set of steps that PhotoShot can use to do the same tasks over and over... Adobe has a really good site with LOTS of tutorials on this and just about everything else you could want to learn to do with PhotoShop. I think you can get there throught the HELP menu in PhotoShop.

The Template File is just a frame that the Action uses to automate the process. The template can be used without the action if you can't figure out how to make the "Actions" work.

The files MUST be put in the directories as described in the original message to this thread, or the action will not work... It doesn't matter where you store the Template file if you aren't going to use the Action. I really don't mean to come off as snooty, so please forgive me if this comes out wrong... but it you don't understand file structure and "where" to store these files even after the instructions that I gave originally, then AT THIS POINT this might be a little ambitious for you... Keep at it though... you'll figure it out...!!!

Thanks BartB:

Your last explanation helped me understand why the action didn't work for me. I was okay up to the point where I decided I didn't need to follow instructions.

It is a great template and I appreciate you sharing it with us.

Sounds like you saved your new file as the same name as the template. I should have told you when saving it, "save as" would be the way to go rather than just save so you could change the name and preserve your original template. You may need to redownload the template.

For flatten image, is there an arow under your layer command at the menu at the top of the page? My flatten image is the last option on the list. It will be grayed out if you only have one layer.

Open up windows explorer. On my computer, I would go to c:\documents and settings\Haynes\desktop

Once this directory (or the equivalent on your computer) is highlighted, you should see the file that is on your desktop. Left click on the file and drag it to whatever location you would like

c:\program files\adobe\photoshop elements\digital film

is the recommended location. You may have to create "digital film", but the other directories should be there. As long as it is using the same drive, I believe the default is move, but if you copy it, once you are sure the files are duplicated in your selected directory, you may safely delete the copies on your desktop.

Hope this helps. As usual, let us know how it works out for you.
