I've posted here a few "vacation trips" with the Canon G9 a couple of weeks ago, following a post by Morris regrading the use of compacts in some situations.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=28836847

This past weekend I took it to the streets in São Paulo (Brasil). Except for MF, which is useless, I used it in manual mode and it worked fairly well. The weather was quite overcast, light a bit low.

Even if not a dslr in some aspects (LV is not great for handholding composition), I liked the way it didn't caught any attention from people. Here are a few pics from the series. Feel free to comment. B&W using Capture NX, from jpegs (L/F).

Now if you didn't tell me I'd have no idea what sort of camera was used for these at this size. Nice set, I like the to opening mass studies and those two phone pods.

Live histogram - now that would save a lot of test exposures, disk space, deletions and time. Strange that it isn't standard on all dslrs - it will be one day, though for the time being would no doubt only work in live-view mode.

Tnx. I'm liking shooting with a small camera lately. I wish one of these companies comes up with a decent compact. Olympus seems to be going that way, it'd be like a small Leica. I could live with one.

You have it in the D300, I assume, in LV mode. Does LV mode impair any of the main shooting functions, like focus or OVF use, in any way?

One thing though is that LV consumes a lot of battery. I shoot 1/3 with a full battery with the G9 as compared with the D80, same conditions (battery is different, but I guess LV has to do with it too).

Yup, there's a lot to be said for portability. These things tend to get too clever for themselves and marketing people rule the roost, insisting that a serious p&s needs to be a serious size - i.e. too big. Bear in mind I no nothing about the current p&s line-up.

LV isn't one of those things I bought it for, so I've had a tinker without really using it, nor reading the relevant pages. The operation strikes me as pretty clumsy/clunky, and a waste of battery power in most situations, though there have been a couple of high mounted tripod situations where it was worthwhile. I've no idea how it focusses in LV... I'll have to look into it as there will be times when I could do with understanding that side.

I seem to get about 700 shots on a charge, though I'm not a big one for studying the LCD depending on lighting. Similar to my 70. I used my mum's G2 without problems on a fortnight's hol a few years back, but turned off the LCD to preserve power.

You might like the new Panasonic LX3 with the 24-60mm f/2.0-2.8 LEICA
DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens:

http://panasonic.net/pavc/lumix/lx3/index.html

Or you might not. It seems like a good option to me, especialy for
architecture and street photog.
The lens is really nice, how are the controls, Iq, etc.? It looks, from what I read, similar to the G9 re controls. Lens should be better and f/2 is really nice, also 24mm at wide end.

Images above were taken in poor light, exifs:

All ISO 100 and FL = 7.4mm (wide end).
  1. 1:
Exposure: 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture: f/2.8
  1. 2:
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/4
  1. 3:
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/2.8
  1. 4 and 5:
Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30)
Aperture: f/2.8
  1. 6: Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/4.5
In-camera flash fired

The Ricoh GX100/200 and GRD I/II might also be interesting for you. SLR-like controls and nice IQ for lower ISO (grainy look for higher sensitivties). People in the Ricoh forum have posted awesome street photography examples with these cams. Out of camera b&w pics look very nice.

Cheers,
Torsten

The Ricohs seem interesting. Also the Panny LX3, the lens seems to be the best among compacts, starting at 24mm and f/2!!

Renato;
If you weren't doing what you do, I wouldn't be tinkering with b/w. Good stuff.

In fact, I think I keep doing b&w because my pics in color usually are quite dull. On this set, in fact, I wanted to shoot color, since the massive columns are red. Light was really bad and colors didn't come out good enough IMO. The first pic works well in color, I'll post it here later today to see what's your opinion.

You finding them inspiring makes me really happy though, since I learned photog thru b&w and have been able, at least, to transport that from film to digital.

I love # 2 Renato. I can almost imagine this as a large print on my wall!

I really like number 1 in color. There's something about the sharp red wall contrasting with the older, more worn building on the left hand side with all the (grafitti) tags that really capture my eye...

Renato;
I think I like #1 better in b/w but this is good.
  1. 2 is a different pic and I like it in color.
The journey continues, thanks Renato
