I can't believe this, but I LOST my 50mm 1.4 -- very sad and puzzled.

I had both the 50 and 85 1.8 with my camera before a two week trip to Italy and could only bring one. I went with the 85 and left the 50 at home. Come back from the trip and it is gone, or at least I can't find it.

Either it got thrown out somehow or my 2.5 year old daughter moved it or my 100 lb dog ate it. None of them seems likely.

Sigh.

Has anyone ever lost a lens before?

In 1983 I drove off with my MInolta X700 with a Vivitar Series 1 2.8 180mm lens on the roof and just did not think about if for about 200 miles. Oh well, never did that again...

Fortunately, I am loosing only things like lens caps, hot shoe caps, PC sync connector caps,... knock on wood, never lost a lens or camera :-)

Koanut -

This completely off topic, but just out of curiosity . . . are you a luthier as well, or did those guitar pics come from somewhere else?

Also - love your sig :)

Jeez, no. I bet it's just "misplaced". ; )

I'm not a newbie on Dpreview, I've been here since June 06. Due to some ridiculous password problem, I lost my posting history. Nice huh?

I was on a train from Dol de Bregaigne to Rens, and left my entire camera bag, D300, 55 1.2, 28 2.0, 18-200, 12-24 tokina and 28-75 tamron on the overhead shelf.

Got to the next platform, did a bag count and panicked. Found the nearest SNCF guy, he pointed to the train, and said it was still on the platform. Ran back, opened the door, and it was still there.

I get shaky even thinging about that.

The recovered images are at

No, I am not a luthier, I just love Koa wood. That is two of my guitars, made by Richard Hoover of Santa Cruz guitar fame. As far as the sig, I like it too...

When you took the lens out of the bag, did you have everything on a bed? If so, look under the bed.

I was once shooting a music show in an auditorium and was moving around from seat to seat. It was a relative staid, middle-class audience and I left my bag at the seat. I came back to the seat and there's no bag. And the bag had two more (expensive) lenses, filters and tons of accessories in it. So I asked the person in the next seat if they had seen a bag and they claimed to have seen nothing.

So I start to panic, but I continued shooting.

I moved to another position and went to another seat I was using and the bag was there! I had forgotten that I had moved it.

I was changing lenses and a 4 year old slammed in to me. I dropped the lens and it rolled about three feet through a gap in the fence (mather point for those that have been there).

Never saw it actually hit......

I could have killed the kid and the parents wouldn't take any responsibilty.

Not a great day as I was a poor college kid and that and my 85mm and 50mm were the only lenses i had.

In 2005 I was touring Scotland by motorbike, and had my photo gear in soft bags on the side of the bike, but I also had a small backpack. And from time to time I would keep my camera in the backpack ,when I was in places where I had to get to the camera every ten minutes.

I was driving around the Isle of Mull, and after completing the tour I found out my backpack was no longer on my back! I never figured out if I lost it or simply forgot it somewhere. I drove around once more but couldn't find it. Fortunately my camera was not in the backpack at the time, but it really could have been. I learned the lesson.

Once thought I had lost my Nikon 180mm 2.8 during trip to Scotland for my mates wedding. I was so convinced it was lost I bought another one. 6 months later I found it stored in a box in the spare bedroom for safe keeping. fortunately I didn't lose too much money on it, when sold on ebay.

Of course you haven't, Frank. You're perfect, right?

What? Are you on something? 99% of people with multiple lenses have never lost one. You've obviously lost one and are very upset about it. But don't take it out on those who have never lost one. I did once, however, misplace my keys. So, after all, I guess I'm not perfect. Are you perfect? How very sad you are that you felt the need to post such an absurd response. Grow up.

No, actually Frank, I never have lost a lens either. But if your pretty certain that 99% of multi lens owners have never lost one, I'm sure glad that they all didn't feel compelled to answer like you did.

He asked if anyone lost a lens. I answered no.

The entire thread is unbelievable. What in the world does it have to do with Nikon lenses. It's better suited for Dear Abby. And responses that suggest he look under his bed???? Please. My response was the most intelligent part of this thread.

You should work on becoming a good photographer instead of a stalker. Based upon your website, you're doing better as a stalker.

Since all of us are stalkers & kids at heart, I propose something along the lines of an Easter Egg Hunt. We can all have fun playing and we'll all get along quite nicely. Won't we boys & girls?

What we do is to all gather in some city, doesn't matter which. Chicago, for example. We'll have the most mature one of us take all of our camera lenses and hide them throughout our hotel. You know, under the bed, under the pillow, etc.

Then, we'll each be given one of those yellow plastic shopping bags with the Nikon label printed on it, just like you'd get from the kid behind the counter at the camera store.

And upon the shouted words, "Children, Go Find Your Toys," we all run in a mad scramble to search for our hidden lenses.

So, what do you guys think?
Think a couple dozen of us are in our second childhood enough to play???
Please be sure to raise your hand to answer the question...

:-)

Funny Frank, where is YOUR website? All you can do is get on here and criticize everyone. Everyone's posts are stupid, everyone's photos are snapshots. Everyone's an idiot for losing a lens. Sorry Frank, I really could give a f--k what you think.

My wife and I have supported our family for twenty years by photography and design. We have paid off our mortgage and put two daughters through college without any outside paychecks. You Frank?? I highly doubt it. I'd be willing to bet I've made more money in the last two weeks with my D700, than you'll make the whole life of yours.

You are such a big talker, and sooo critical of everyone here. So, little man, let's see your website.

Personally, I still think you're really 11, sneaking up playing on Daddy's website after he goes to bed. Better hurry off to bed now before you get grounded.
