Nikon D300 Picture control

Read this on photo.net forums: " "D-lighting" can be duplicated more
or less, by using the Fill Light function in LR or ACR."
I beg to differ between d-lighting and active d-lighting. Both will be applied in jpegs and tagged as processing information to raw files but "active" does also influence the exposure metering / adjustment in order to optimize the dynamic range for the d-lighting process.

kind regards,
Carlos

Sometimes you just have to check it out what is all the fuss about and I learned something again. Haven't down load the updates yet but I will now that I know about it.

Two things. First, I loved your website, second, many thanks for your
terrific research. Can you please tell me when you would use D2XMODE
111? All the best, and thanks in adavance. --
Michael
Sorry Michael,
Just saw your post. Thanks for the compliments.

I like to use the D2x mode III for anything that I want the reds to pop up ( sunsets, strawberries...). But to tell you the truth, I haven't use it that much. Lately I'm using the new Portrait mode for most of my shots, I like the natural but rich tones it produces. I will post a shot to compare to the other modes soon.

Cheers,
Frederic.

But it's only a hobby, and I only process images I intend to print.
I'm curious here. Do you ever plan to utilize a jpeg file in this hobby. Or do you only deal with nef files? Cause if you do deal with jpegs than its worth learning what picture control setting you like.

and that picture controls in general do nothing when shooting RAW.
Do nothing unless you view your NEFs in View NX or Capture NX. Far as
I know, third party software does not recognize pictures control
settings except for defaults. Am I wrong anyone?>
I think 3rd party software doesnt see the picture controls at all and just opens a raw file as its programmed to open it. So if you select vivid vs neutral the 3rd party softerware opens the raw file the same way.

If you shoot jpeg its immensely important as I see it to understand pic controls. If you shoot raw and use nikon software you can change the setting in capturenx, but its still worth trying to get things best as possible, since you will initially see the photo with the pic control settings you selected. And changing things for every picture is tough especially if capturenx runs slow on your pc.

I shot JPG originally, until a poorly-selected White Balance issue cost me a picture that I would have really liked to have had. I do use JPGs currently, which I post on my pbase account, but after converting from NEF with my workflow.

I'm a failry technical person, so I understand the Picture Controls fairly well, and actually have all the Custom ones installed (DX2 modes, Landscape, etc). I've played with them, I simply don't use them.

Dont get me wrong, I'm just trying to be helpful and understand better. But couldn't you shoot jpeg and raw (perhaps when its not an important event) and if there's no fabulous shots or no shots ruined by bad WB, just delete the raw files. Youd save on hard drive space and its faster work flow. Also if I want to email a picture of my kids to someone, I dont have to first start editing a raw photo in nikonnx, I can grab the jpeg and just email it (window will compress/downsize the file). What do you think? Editiing every pic in nikonnx can get tedious for me.

I don't use Capture NX because I just don't like it. I use Bibble and CS2, which converts things fairly fast and well for me. I have done the 600-image vacation conversion for my family, but when it comes time to make my own prints, I work with each one (that I will print) individually.

I could do raw+jpg, but don't like the card space it uses. PC Storage isn't a big deal, and I would simply rather keep the best possible format, NEF IMHO (I build my own computers and upgrading storage isn't a problem).

I've had this workflow for almost 3 years now since my D50, and it just personally works best for me and my personality. I have no complaints about it.

No problem, I didn't take your comments negatively.

Many thanks for your help, and for taking the time. It's strange, I asked Nikon and told them I've downloaded D2XMODEIII into Capture NX, and they insist ot does n't exist!! All the best and thanks again.

People sometimes forget that the controls you set DO affect the image on the back of your camera and so you may make other adjustments based on looking at it and the histogram. So even in shooting RAW you should at least be familiar with the Picture Controls. One day you may have occasion to shoot JPG, so you might as well get familiar now!

Rob.

So huge thread but no posted custom picture controls files from any of you for others to try?
Do you all only use just those prepared ones without any modifications?
