Beijing Olympic Events

Do you think that an event like the Olimpics is the best place to check new material? Prototypes?

If i was a photog working there, the last thing I'd do is to work with something I don't control completely... even if it was a final and reliable camera.

Not a problem to go with a test camera, as canon would send a few people just to test, not to take professionnal saleable shots. If it is so, good, but main goal would be testing in heavy rate and so different situations (different sports, indoor/outdoor, could even do some landscape test around, etc etc).

Anyway, I guess there is tons of regional sport event in japan to test such prototype without catching attention.

China happens to have some of the most polluted cities in the world. “Western media” are merely reporting what they know. They will report the same if it’s in an American or European city. It’s anything but sugar coated news from state controlled media people in that country are used to. I do think the poster above has the intention of bashing China but you can’t say media is responsible for the problems there. Again don’t blame the messenger.

Too much OT rumble but since you asked.

You said it youself here. "“Western media” are merely reporting what they know"

Which is almost nothing. We all know the pollution in China. But the Western Medias are very strict and critical with China. Sounds like China is going to be a "threat" or something.

The biggest bully in the world is probably the US. US has 1/10 the world's population but used 1/4th of world's energy resources. Hmm thats a nice figure.

We also love wars (oil), we just land our troops at our other countries to fire couple of rounds and drop couple of bombs to test our latest weapons.
I can go on and on too. But i will stop here.

US is facing its worst economic decline ever right now. Corporations and Banks are filing bankrupcy, people have no houses to live. sigh........I am lucky i still have a job.

again, dont blame on the messenger.

Nice to see you let it all out. Now I understand where you're coming from. No need to waste my time anymore. Only thing I want to say is that I see the same criticism of US you made in the “American media” everyday but I don’t see that many people getting so emotional like you.

You too have a nice day stay in American.

why do you sound so sarcastic? Waste your time?

I wasn't going to say all these if you didn't ask for. I just want to tell you how ignorant some americans are. Not all, but some.

I am in China and will be shooting at the games starting August 16th. I shoot race walking for http://www.racewalk.com and some papers. I've been here for two weeks and the skys are gray, the weather is hot and humid. For two weeks I have been mostly vacationing, but have been photographing. If you want to see results of a 1DS Mark III you can at http://www.twofeetgallery.com/twofeetgallery/Gallery/TheGallery.asp

There are shots from China in one gallery and some more in the One Dress gallery. All but one of the One dress shots were shot using my 1Ds Mark III and I think all the China galleries are as well.

I posted earlier about my experiences with the 1DS Mark III hiking in the alps for a month. There is a gallery of those shots as well.

I am 99% happy with my 1Ds MarkIII. One poster to my last thread stated the 1Ds Mark III has a slightly less dynamic range than the Mark II. Anactdolally, I have to agree. It's really my only wish. I've shot a number of 1000 ISO shots when in low light and found the results very pleasing, so the noise factor is not a factor to me.

When I shoot actual race shots, I will post links. However, I used the camera at the 50K Olmypic Trials. http://www.racewalk.com/PhotoStory200850KOlympicTrials/200850KOT_01.asp

As to the earlier thread about the American media, they are biased. They hop on whatever story they think will sensationalize the news and run with it without really investigating. Take the Internet. I have had 0 problems accessing the internet, other than slow connections and racey photos. i.e. there was a story about someone posing nude. That got blocked. My understanding from talking to people who live here is that bloggers in China are blocked. Not western media. As to the controlled media. I've actually seen and heard quite a bit of critical news of China while in China, so they can't be that restrictive.

If I don't reply to someone's post I am actually leaving for 3 days where I may have no access to the Internet

Just a bit of American history but this is far from being the worst economic decline ever. It is not even close to what the US went through in the 30's and early 40's. I may be incorrect on the year. I believe it was 1939 when the unemployment rate in the US hit 25%.

I do not know how accurate the numbers are, it would seem difficult to really have a factual number, but the estimates are that something like 7% of the population of the US is homeless at any particular time.

Unemployment rate in China is 4% in China, of course that figure generally excludes rural areas. In the US the rate is currently about 6%.

All of which has nothing to do with photography but then neither did your post.

these photogs would not necessarily use the new equioment for their bread and butter shots. However most carry or have more then one body nearby. No big deal if they happen to have a new 5D next to their 1D's.

Quite agree the pollution isnt as bad as how western reporter has whipped up about. It is haze and mist that is contributing with poor visbility. Former medallist Steve Cram had a run today and said it is fine and today the mist is the worst for 2 weeks so it can only get better therefore unlikely that any endurance events get cancelled because of it.

Those American athletes wore face mask may have been over cautious but I think their motives were done out of spite against the host nation. No holiday makers from USA to Beijing needed face masks.

When you have manufactuiring industry you get pollution. China is the factory of the world, were do you think you get your cameras from and most of the components that goes in it so you can now have a cheap shot at the expense of the country that gave you the product?

I remember back in the 70s and early 80s in the UK and polllution was pretty bad like China's cities in the east coast, it was at t a time when the UK still had some sort of manufacturing base. That fact that western countries enjoy clean air in recent years is down to the fact that they moved all their polluting factories into China so please dont criticise the Chinese or their government.

There is not doubt many Chinese are exploited even though their living standards got better than before. On the other hand you need to be clear who actually exploited them. It’s not the western media. You can react to criticism in different ways but put your head in the sand and blame the messenger is not going to do you any good. Remember how the industrial belt in US was like in the 60’s? I don’t think we will be fairing any better if it’s not for the media publicity that started the environmental movement. Like I said the sugar coated news is the one that will hurt you in the long run. I'm waiting for the "Chinese media" to do the job they supposed to do.

BTW I don’t need to buy any products that will result in people in another part of the world to bear the bad consequences. It’s fine with me if China decided not to manufacture anything because of that.

apparently they don't have trained photo helpers at venues either (as they have had at all other recent games), they decided to use rookie police enforcers or something, that should be fun and help things to go smoothly!!
The next two weeks will put the test to camera performance in the
real world.
High Temps, High Humidity, Haze, Low and High Contrast, Pollution on
fast moving subjects in a wide variety of situations..

Wonder which manufacture will come out on top in the real world.
Real world results will give the answer. Shocking idea.

i understand you had to file a document to bring in each and every piece of equipment, so if they did use any such, some official there at customs surely has it on record.

of course perhaps the 5D is still too landscape oriented and too untested for use here, then again maybe not
I would speculate that Canon may have some pros trying out the 5D
successor. I understand that camera mfg allow certain individuals to
preview and try equipment especially at events like the Olympic Games.

Canonophiles who are lucky enough to be there might keep their eyes
open for new equipment and report back to the rest of us.

You are hopeless. Who is blaming on the messengers????????

what if the messengers are spreading bias opinion? who is right who is wrong?

Is the messenger being fair?

There are many things you can talk about "messenger"

Bush (the messenger) said there are nuclear weapons in Iraq. Update we havent found any yet. I let you be the judge of this.

The messenger can say anything they want, its up to the listener to have an open mind to view this world in a different perspective. Fairness is all i need from the mesengers.

HI Chip

I dont mean to stir this up. Maybe you are right back in the 30s or 40s before the US entered WWII the economy was pretty bad. WWII helped a little for recovering the econ.

My points is right now we are only seeing the begining of the decline. As far as i can see, this cycle will last at least 5 to 10 years. Decline is most obvious in big cities. I work in the architectural field, I know many developers and bank going bankrupt recently. Realstate market completely crashed. Foreclosure houses are everywhere.

I do post photographs. If you like, you can visit my flickr site.

Best.

Canon will win out. The Nikon D3 did not fair well in the cold as they actually locked up. Will definitely be interesting to see the ratio of white lenses versus black.

My money is on Canon having the majority. I would even bet that many will be using the MIIN as I believe many still consider it to be the best sports camera mad to date (based on MIII focus performance).

So the west buying China made product is not exploiting Chinese workers? Oh give me a break!

China is doing fine thankyou very much and has lifted 400 million people out of poverty in 30 years. No countries on earth managed that.
There is always winners and losers, that is capitalism and market economy.

It is you how is living in cloud coocoo land. The western media is sprouting rubbish by sensationalising the negative aspect of industrialisation blaming it on oppression by the Chinese government. Well how did the West came about being industrialised? If these western journos understood anything about history or do a bit of research it they will recognise there is a proce for economic success. Maybe they do but they are only there bashing China and it is these lemmings such as yourself who goes along with the bashing.

...then it would be at least 80% Canon, just like the 2004 Olympics. It's only the Nikon fanboys fantasizing that most of the lenses in the sidelines would be long black ones (excluding the odd Sigma ;P)...
