Same shot, Different PP

interesting...

I think I like the first one better.. the second seems like a 'regular' (though very good) macro but the first has a nice dreamy effect, which i guess is the idea

I think the first one, though with the effect toned down a little bit. Or maybe applied only to the surroundings, leaving the little critter nice and sharp.

Nice capture, though.

I love them both for different reasons.

The first with the Orton Effect looks like a piece of art work...the colours are muted and pastel-like! Very pleasing to the eye...kinda dreamy! I would use this one to illustrate a poem about the garden in the evening perhaps.

The second one is sharper more test-bookish but nonetheless beautiful. Colours have more pop...but just right. I would use this one to illustrate a book of insects for kids, calculated to not present bugs in a yucky way.

Does any of this make sense Al! I do love them both for the reasons stated. Anyway as someone once said, "You done did good Al!" ;-)

All the best
Leo

P.S. What?! Do you have kidney stones too? That's what my five surgeries have been all about! You are correct...kidney stones are no fun at all!

Thanks, Brendan. I like the effect as well. I saw a shot of a flower done that way and did a google search on it and have been playing with it for a day. I was processing this skipper and thought why not give it a try. I guess this would work on people portraits as well.

Hey, Leo, great to hear from you. I hope you're recovering nicely.

This all makes perfect sense, Leo. I think that my normal style could best be described and "documentary" as I really don't have an artsy bone in my body. the shot with the Orton effect is quite out of character for me, but I like it.
All the best
Leo

surgeries have been all about! You are correct...kidney stones are no

Yes, Leo, I have one on each side. I think I learned what your surgery was about the day after my first attack. The one on the left side is almost to my bladder and is 3.7mm. I'm hoping that I pass it soon, really soon. The one on the other side is about the same size and, so far, is staying put in the kidney. I spent Friday night in the ER because the pain was so bad I couldn't stand myself. Good thing I don't have a gun or I might have put myself out of my misery :o) That's when they did a CT scan and confirmed that it was kidney stones. I was already going through some tests with the family doctor prior to Friday's killer attack. With any luck I'll get through this without the need for surgery.

Yup Al! Stones are an adventure. The 3 I had removed measured: 41 mm, 7mm and 3.5 mm.! For obvious reasons I was never going to pass the 41 mm stone! And I still have 3 on the left side...9, 7.5 and 7mm respectively. This why I still occasionally pop Percocets like jelly beans.

I completely empathize with you my friend. Your urologist is your good friend! ;-)
I hope you pass them happily or that they remain quiescent!

All the best mate

And that was my thought as well. Is there a way to fade the effect to get something in between. I like the detail of your usual PP, but in comparison it almost looks harsh and "overdone" if you'll pardon the clumsy expression. Having the option to mix somewhere in between -- maybe a lot of somewheres in between depending on the desired effect -- would be welcome.

Can you reference the program you used, please. And thanks.

Beautiful shots, both of 'em. I would kinda like to see just a tad more detail on the subject on #1, and keep the effect on the rest. #2 is a great macro shot, but as a non-insect liker well..... almost too detailed? I dunno what is good, I just know what I like. And I liked #1.

Leo sure has a way with words.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Bruce.

It's a very simple technique and you have complete control over the outcome. Open your photo and duplicate the background layer. Go th levels and change the midtone point from 1,0 to 2.0. Now duplicate that layer. Set the blending mode of the new top layer to Multiply. Now apply a gausian blur to the top layer. You change the strength og the effect by changing the blur width of the gausian blur.

Thanks, Lloyd.

I had commented previously that I probably should have masked out the effect around the eyes and, perhaps the whole head.

Thanks! I took a few minutes and applied a layer mask to let the original image through on the eye and head and I think that is the best of both versions.
