Which brand has the worst fanboy zealots?

Whichever brand currently feels somehow slighted by Phil's bias.

When a Nikon review comes out, the offending odor comes from the Canon forum.

When a Canon review appears, it comes from the Sony forum.

When an Olympus review is out, it comes from the Olympus forum.

In the Nikon forum the sh*t hits the fan every time a new Nikon camera is announced. Half of the people in the forum immediately buy the new gear and post box-opening pics, and the other half don't buy it and then bash it based on irrelevent minutiae that prevent it from being perfect.

Yup, thats very Nikon. I remember the screaming when the D40 came out. A large number of D50/70 owners went orbital because it wasnt a 'real' Nikon accepting lenses back to 1826 or whenever while the D40 boosters came over like everything previous was instantly redundant as a picture taking device.

And oh yes, the ritual of the pics of the box. Do they do this on other forums?

If you want to be really gender neutral though, try "significant fan."
Oh my, I really like that one.

And perhaps if one wanted to be both insulting and pc, one could label someone as Hardware Challenged?

'Good composition is only the strongest way of seeing the subject. It cannot be taught because, like all creative effort, it is a matter of personal growth. In common with other artists the photographer wants his finished print to convey to others his own response to his subject. In the fulfillment of this aim, his greatest asset is the directness of the process he employs. But this advantage can only be retained if he simplifies his equipment and technique to the minimum necessary, and keeps his approach free from all formula, art-dogma, rules, and taboos. Only then can he be free to put his photographic sight to use in discovering and revealing the nature of the world he lives in.'

I agree, I have never been able to understand why the film guys get
so upset. Especially on a digital only site.
That's the reason right there!! What kinda film photographer will log on to a digital photography forum and advocate using film? Yes - that kind of photographer...

All brands have their zealots and they all gather on dpreview. I
think Oly has more than its fair share because

1. There is more to be defended there. 4/3 is off the wall and Oly
has painted itself into a corner with it.
2. Oly is not a camera for the professional arena
3. Oly has a lot of techno-baloney that the users latch onto because
they are in defense mode.
4. Oly is innovative and the fans can't work out why the world
doesn't rush to their door.

I'm not an Oly basher but I have been branded as one. I just
recognise their limitations. My next camera is likely to be an Oly 4/3
I felt I could have written most of that too :-)

Now with the m43 system, I can even support your last statement ...

I've been seen as a Nikon basher before the D3. Now I think most agree that the bigger sensor is better, if you can afford it.

I've been seen as a Sigma basher when the sampling theorem and the limits of silicon as a color filter etc was discussed her at DPReview forums.

I've been seen as a Oly basher when the 'F2 is F2' was debated ...

I've never been banned or even warned by Phil, so I guess none have filed a complaint ... :-)

I'm in no way brand loyal. I've criticized Canon a lot too.

Sony, Nikon and Oly seems to have nice products that can make me switch soon.

Definitely film fanatics. The same blind & extreme worshiping as can
bee seen in some religions, and yes, once you say something that is
construed, by them, as "anti film" it will be considered as
sacrilege. Basically what we have here is a group of fanatics that
are trying to form a cult.
Say hi to the Black Knight folks.

Cha Chah, at least you are consistent. You wrote "Like most things in Ireland, it started in a bar"

I see that you had already a few. It is hard to be be coherent when you are over the limit.

Maybe some real photographers would produce a proper coffee-guffaw if you made it look as sexy as humanly possible? ;)

Idea - why dont you keep it simple and just shout 'four legs good, two legs bad' any time someone mentions the word film. Saves time.

Well, as the leicas (even digital) are basically unchanged the last 50 years, please tell me the meaning of the word "obsolete"
Volkswagen.

Well, for cameras, it has to be Leica. When you spend that much more
money to get a camera which will quickly become obsolete, you have to
defend it.

and I had to catch myself once again, mad that I let myself get sucked into your bad karma. So, response deleted.

By the way...semi-pro you ask...send me your mailing address and I'll send you brochures and catalogues from my workplace, plus an issue of People Magazine, and several other publications with my photo credits. Not my day job, but I make a nice sum yearly, thank you very much.

So as not to hijack the thread, as Joe is so capable of doing, I find zealots in every forum. Nearly everyone likes to think that they have the best gear, which is a natural emotion. The ones who bother me the most are those who are looking for the next latest-greatest even though the current top model just hit the market. The D700 is out, wait 'til people start crying for the D700x or D800. Silly stuff.

But one should try to balance entertainment value with efficacy. Perhaps something that could be used both at DPR & APUG, hmmm, or by any "fanperson".

Perhaps.....

Like a brief video clip of a pod person shrieking from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (i apologize, checked on YouTube for one, but could not find any).

Cool, had not heard of them, know where I can see the specs and noise comparisons?
Oh, I get it.
Thats not fair.

Yeah, well what I want to know is why Nikon ripped people like me off by leaving stuff off the D700 and then adding it to the D700x. I emailed them and they wont even be issuing a free firmware update for D700 users.............
