Hi,

just got my new D700. Connected it to my iMac and was wondering that the D700 will not appear as a HD icon on my desktop. Anybody experiencing the same?

download "nikon transfer" free from nikon's website

there have been earlier posts about Apple's aperature, iphoto, etc., not having the D700 in its "catalog" of cameras. Several posts how to address this problem as we wait for Apple to give us the update for the d700. ACS and others have been updated. Capture etc, work.

It does show up in Windows, but not in Leopard. I didn't have this problem with D300. The person who suggested card-reader can use it himself, in camera transfer works much faster, I use to be able to transfer 7 gigs in less than 15 minutes with my D300. I think D300 did have a mass storage option, but I can't find it on D700.

Nikon Transfer does work, but in my option it is not a solution, but a work around. I hate to have extra software, unless it is really necessary.

7 gigs transfers in about 7 minutes on my Lexar UDMA Wirewire 800 card reader.

Do you have the camera directly connected to the back of the iMac? Sometimes devices go unrecognized when they are routed through an intermediate connecting USB device, such as a hub or keyboard.

If you use a card reader on the Mac (and I'm sure PCs), you don't need the Nikon Transfer software. When you insert the card into the card reader, the card mounts as "D700" (the D700 applies that name when it formats the card). You can simply use the Finder to access the D700 "disk" and transfer the picture files anywhere you want. I believe you can also use the Nikon Transfer software, but I'm not sure that provides any advantages.

If you don't use a card read, I believe you need to use Nikon Transfer software because the D700 does not support USB mass storage device. (Please correct that if I'm mistaken!)
