Hello everybody, I'm going to buy a digital camera, never had one and I'm a total beginner about the technical stuff...

I have a budget of about 100 euro and I noticed two good offers from vendors here in Italy: Kodak M763 and Pentax Optio E50.

They both have lithium battery and image stabilization, or at least i think so... the M763 is 7.2 Mpixel and the Pentax is 8 Mpixel.

Prices are 89 euro for the kodak and 99 for the pentax.

Could you please help me to decide wich one to buy? or maybe you know another better camera at that range of price... ;)

thanks

Stabilization is a nice feature. But in low price cameras I would be more concerned with basic quality. Aside from the USD - Euro exchange rate, I suspect that the prices for different brands line up a little differently in Italy from the USA. So I can only guess at other cameras that might make your budget. But some to check are the Canon A590, Olympus FE-340, and Panasonic FS3. That particular Canon does have stabilization, but is a bit more bulky than the other two. It would be a real help if you could post a URL to an online camera store for Italy. Then we could see all your prices.

I have to buy it today or tomorrow, so I can't wait for upcoming offers... btw vendors in Italy currently have this cameras for offer:
Kodak M763 89 eyro
Pentax Optio E50 99 euro
Kokak C713 79 euro
Canon A470 99 euro
Fuji(Fujifilm) A850 99 euro

I don't know what feature are important for these low-prices cameras... but I think rechargeable lithium battery could be very useful for me. this is the only I know.

and more... how much important Mpixels are, for the quality of the pics? Is there so much difference from 7 to 8 MPixels?

p.s. here's the url of a digital camera (and not only) vendor here in Italy... please note that my budget is 100 euros at maximum ;)

You are not going to see a difference between 7 and 8 megapixels unless you are blowing up something very big. I know little about those cameras that you posted but I have never been a fan of kodak for some reason. Olympus and Canon are using my two P&S choices.

I have just never been a fan of Kodak. I hate their "easyshare" software with a passion, and it seems that everyone i know has had an issue at some point with their kodak. I am sorry to say I know nothing of Pentax P&S. The Fuji A850 (i think) you had listed seems promising.

the fuji A850 hasn't liyhium battery, the only ones who got Li-ion batteries through the models reported above are kodak m763 and pentax optio e50, i think... I'm going to decide for one of these two, most probably...

Okay, I would go for the Fuji or the Canon. I would probably lean towards the Canon over the Fuji though. I have little experience with P&S as I have owned Sony PS' all my life. I love their cameras. From the looks of things, I like the Canon. I did notice though, that the Fuji offers "museum mode" which seems very impressive.

oh, so the pentax hasn't lithium batteries... :(

thanks for all your help and technical informations... but LI-ion battery is the most important fature for me, as I'm not an advanced photographer I look more for easy-use features, like batteries. ;)

Anybody out there has experiences with Kodak M-series cameras?

I have no idea what the conversion rates are, but 99 euro was coming up about 130 USD( I was basing this one prices for what that camera was running on websites in the US). Anyways, for 199 USD which would be like 80 more Euro or something (sorry i really have no idea) but there is the Canon SD750 which in my opinion is an absolutely great camera. Not sure if its out of your budget, but its very nice for the price, and has those batteries you like!!

Yes, the canon sd750 is about 170-180 euro, quite too much for my budget...

It really sucks that the kodak is the only one who got lythium batteries, that restrict my choice range to only one... :(

Do you know if there are any other "under 100 euro" cameras that got lithium rechargeable batteries?

Check out the

Sony Cybershot DSCS730
Fujifilm J10

Both of those should run Li-ion batteries and should be pretty good cameras for what you are looking for.

I had a look at the shops in my city, I've been not able to find the Fuji j-10... btw, I think Li-ion batteries aren't a necessary priority no more, as i've seen some Nimh rechargeable batteries at very cheap prices... and furthermore the Li-ion battery needs to be available on the market for the specific camera model, whenever I'll need to substitute it...

So Li-ion battery is no more a priority, I think... if I can find better quality cameras at the same range of price ;)

In terms of very low price cameras I would say Kodak is a good option. We have a 4 year old 5mp Kodak we paid $80 for and the camera never fails to surprise us with the good pictures we get from it. It eats up AA batteries but since we now use nimh hybrid rechargeables (Sanyo Eneloops) batteries are no longer an issue. For low price cameras I am defintely on the Kodak bandwagon.

Those AA hybrid rechargeables (Sanyo Eneloops) batteries that Mary noted are the only realistic alternative to throwaway AAs. The inexpensive NiMH batteries have such a short shelf life that they are just not worth the fuss. Unfortunately the Sanyo Eneloops are hard to find in some areas.

Any battery that is not listed as AA or AAA will be a rechargable, even if it is not lithium. And any dedicated rechargable is much, much better than the cheap NiMH AA batteries. I've used those cheap NiMH AAs with a Canon. In my view they should be banned from the market!

Unfortunately your URL for the camera store in Italy did not post. Of the cameras you have listed the Canon A470 will give the nicest results. If only the darned thing didn't look like a toy! From your list my 2nd choice would be the Fuji or Pentax, mostly on reputation.
