I was waiting for the official review from Imaging Resource before asking this question - so I guess it's fair game now. According to Dave's review Sony is still shipping PictureGear 3.2 Lite as the included software with the 505V.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/F505V/F505VA.HTM

However in a user review posted on the PCPhotoReview board, a Belgium user states that he received MGI PhotoSuite and MGI VideoWave.

http://www.pcphotoreview.com/dc/reviews/view.cfm?ProductID=394&Start=1

I'm curious, is the MGI software package something that only ships in Europe, while the US has the PictureGear package? Has anyone from the US received the 505V yet that can comment on the included software? The MGI package sounds like a big step-up from PictureGear Lite!

I'm also curious (probably a question for Dave Etchells!) if the camera used for the Imaging Resource review was a preproduction model. This could effect the shutter lag timing that is referred to in that review (preproduction software is often not as optimized as official release code).

Finally, where did the A/V output connector get moved to on the 505V. I couldn't make it out from Dave's pictures. The old location is now occupied by the external flash connector, and the picture of the A/V connector in Dave's review appears to be from the 505 camera (just speculating).

Yeah, you're right ... looking at the 505V images, I can't seem to find the A/V out port. They might have moved it inside the covered panel along with the USB and serial ports. Or worse, the feature was removed (yay!). Just a guest.

Hi there Brent -

I've been in contact with Dave and the IR guys for the past few days now. I did mention the inaccuracy of the review on the point of the software included, and they will likely be adjusting the page accordingly. Not only will the F505V come with the MGI PhotoSuite for stills and cataloging, it will also come with MGI VideoWave SE (a limited version of the larger product by the same name) for editing movies. This is the same software that comes currently with both the Japanese as well as USA models of the S70, S50, and S30. There is no change for the USA version of the F505V.

Yes, it is a BIG step up from PictureGear.

I've been raving about this for a few months now. You can read about the great deal that MGI landed with Sony at the following link:
http://www.mgisoft.com/news/latest/pressnext.asp?pressitem=106&body=
I'm also curious (probably a question for Dave Etchells!) if the camera

could effect the shutter lag timing that is referred to in that review
(preproduction software is often not as optimized as official release
code).
It seems not to have been an actual production model, but it was very, very close right down to the silk screened logos and lettering on the sides. I asked about that affecting the coding as well. He thought at the time that since the firmware was already in use with actual production S70 cameras that it was fairly near final. My only comment on that is that there are a few things about the F505V that are unique, and so the firmware could well have been slowed down somewhat by code that is unique to this camera. It cannot be a clone of the firmware used for an S70. So this is what I hope, as well.
Finally, where did the A/V output connector get moved to on the 505V. I
couldn't make it out from Dave's pictures. The old location is now
occupied by the external flash connector, and the picture of the A/V
connector in Dave's review appears to be from the 505 camera (just
speculating).
I will also see if I can get info on this for verification. The picture does appear to be recycled, does it not? :)

Under the review's Highlights, it says:
. USB or RS-232 computer interface.

So where is the RS-232 port now located ? I would have care less if theres no more serial connection, its too slow anyway.

I've heard rumors that it (the A/V out connector) was moved under the cover. You brought up my real question, I guess - did we lose any connectivity? Although I seldom use A/V out or serial, I do sometimes use them! A/V out is useful to show pictures to friends that don't have computers. If you have your camera and cable you can just hook up to their TV. It's more impressive than viewing the lcd display ;^)

I also use serial at work occasionally. One of the machines I link up to runs NT (and therefore not USB). I'm fairly confident that we have all of the same connectivity - I'm just curious as to what it looks like.

Thanks Ulysses for the MGI post. You said something about this software a few days ago, but I didn't understand the relevance. I'll follow your link and find out what kind of partnership MGI and Sony have cooked up.

We're on the same page, really.

As of this writing, I seldom use the A/V out so far. But it is a really neat feature that's nice to have around. I prefer the serial port to go away, but to me (like you), it is useful when I'm at work as my PIII machine runs NT (USB not supported yet), no MS slot (like my home laptop), and serial is the only way to get those images dowloaded.
Cheers!

Hi

I just bought the 505V in HongKong 5 days ago, this model is released in HK for quite awhile according to the shopkeepers(FYI Nikon coolpix 990 sold out). Price around 7000 HongKong dollars. Package includes MGI PhotoSuite 9.06 and VideoWave SE+. Camera case not included and it costs around 400 HKD.

As for the AV out, its located on the top panel next to the USB out. Both ports are hidden under a slide panel.

Hi

The software package should be photosuite 8.06 and not 9.06. Sorry for the error.

Does it still have the RS232C(serial) port ? If yes, where is it located ? In 505. it used to be beside the USB port.
Thanks.

Hi

It don't have the serial port anymore. I did not own a 505 so I guess the new features added are the external flash and the tripod mount.

Ah,

That answers that then! Thanks for the info Ivy. I guess I have no problem living without the serial port ;^) Interesting that you bought your camera in HK instead of Singapore (or did I misread your email address?) I tried to buy my 505 in Singapore back in January, but I waited too long to make up my mind and everyone sold out. I ended up spending more in the US! Oh well ...

The removal of the serial port is new; the addition of the external flash is new.

The metal tripod mount is old and unchanged.

I'm glad to see that others are learning to live without the serial port. I couldn't believe that the guys were lamenting its demise! LOL!

Oh well, like I posted in another thread, no camera can satisfy by 100%. Hey! I thought the L.A. Lakers would sweep the Indiana Pacers in four games! Even Shaq can't be perfect. But I'll take his poor freethrow shooting along with the rest of his game on ANY day, just like I'll put money down on the F505V. :)

How's THAT for an analogy, Teddy?

Serial port, or no serial port ... I don't care. I have two USB ports and a Memory slot on my PC.

Dallas people says "Eddie is better!", me thinks Marty Brodeur is better, I might be wrong, they might be true ... but still, who won the Stanley Cup ?
Oh well ... its been a long day. :)

Stanley Cup? What's that? Is that an award for a sport? Hahahah!!

Just kidding you. :)

But I wonder if the F505V would be able to capture the lightning fast motion of the players on the ice?

Hi
No Problem.

Somehow, 505 is out of stock in Sg for a long time, none of the shopkeepers I asked knows anything about 505V, one even claimed that Sony will never produce such a product better than 505. (Oh well..)

HongKong is one of the place in Asia where you can find the latest technology stuffs. That is why besides having a good shopping time in HK, the other purpose is to get 505V. The good thing is 505V got international warranty.

Its going to be a big question mark whether 505V is ever going to be shelved in Sg. Even nikon 990 will not be shipped in to Sg as the 950 sales is not good enough.
