*** CTF challenge 164 - The Zone System ***

I still have trouble seeing tonal range in colour as I can in B&W but when you say shots having a certain luminance, sort of bright & dark in the picy then I can see that working even though ole Ansel disliked colour picys as ahrt:-)
Regards Rod

Rod, thanks for the welcome to the challenges.

Re borders; I don't always put a border on a picture, but it does often 'complete' the picture as Lydia says. More so with a BW image in my view. I felt a small black/white border worked well for these images, and fitted in nicely with the background tone of the gallery page. But as the convention (probably un-written) here seems to be borderless, I will happily reload the pics with borderless if that is felt to be the norm. (Guidance welcome from experienced contributors)

I recall there was a discussion in the gallery comments about an image with a large white border which I did fine somewhat intrusive against the background page tone, drawing the eye away from the image.

Pay not attention to us yakking on about borders, Martin. grin

It's just our way of passing the time while we wait for the voting to start after we get our entries in. We discuss borders often... but mostly we don't care. Rod just likes to have something to pick on us girls about since our piccys are prettier than his. wink

Border. Don't Border. It's all good here. We're an easy bunch. :) Welcome!

Going color might indeed open up the challenge for those who have resisted participating so far Rod. However I think it will make things very complicated too. It is relatively easily to spot zones in black and white because it is well...as plain as black and white. At least to me right now finding zones in color seems very tedious and though I always hope for a big challenge with lots of images I think we could end up with a lot of confusion- don't you think? But whatever the masses want I guess :-)

Apologies to those who dont know me (or remember me!!) but just to say I am still alive (only just as time holding a camera has been limited this last few months!!)

I get married next Friday and it is still a secret from everyone not attending the ceremony Saturday we have a big "birthday party" and all will be revealed to the other guests. (We have got a good list now of non-standard shots to have taken as well as the standard groups and relaxed informal shots)

After that I hope...I will be back on here!!!

Sorry to have joined, got to know you all and then done a runner for a few months but I thought I better warn you the peace may soon be over!! I might miss the next challenge (as I believe the other half has a "surprise" planned for the first week of August) - but after that...

Good to see all the old familiar names on here. Look forward to sharing ideas with you SOON as a married lady

clairet (soon to be claireh!)

It was nice having you participate with us for the time you did and I look forward to having you participate again soon- as a married woman :-) I hope all goes well with your wedding, sounds really fun to me to surprise some people with it, and hope your other half has a great place planned out for your honeymoon. Enjoy!

I hope you'll be back soon... but most of all that the wedding goes well, the honeymoon even better, and the marriage even better than those two, Claire.

What an exciting event that we are all privy to, but no one else lol... I feel like i'm in on a big secret with no one to tell :) I am very excited for you and hope that the surprise and your happiness exceed your expectations!!! Don't worry about us back here - you go have the fun and experience of your life. We'll always be here when you return.

In the meantime, know that we will all be thinking of you :)

Even though I do agree wiv everything she just said.........Well, cept for girls taking prettier picys than me:-)
Regards Rod

I would rather see lots of comments than lots of picys but there was a mention at the beginning how books have been written on how to apply the zone system to colour picys. I was surprised we only had a couple of colour ones posted so far.

It's quite possible the brain will go for a pretty colour picy over a good B&W zone type picy so the voting could be quite frustrating to watch for some. I will be shooting for B&W this weekend as I can't judge the zones in a colour picy.
Maybe us blokes can shoot B&W & the girls can shoot colour:-)
Regards Rod

Charming init we all give up our real lives to keep this challenge going & you bugger off to get married. Well I hope after the honeymoon is over you learn to neglect your new hubby & spend lots of time stuck in front of the computer talking to us lot:-)

Have a great time at your wedding & just try to enjoy yourself, which I know you will.
Very best wishes to you & yer new ole man & see you in a few weeks. Take care:-)
Regards Rod

..over borders? grin

Lydia says she wouldn't hang a picture on the wall without a frame, and Rod doesn't like them. OK, it's not really an issue. I'm sticking to my original decision here of including a small border.

And I'm not going to risk being drawn into a discussion of whether girls' picys are prettier!! :-) Except to say that I thought Lydia's picture of under-lit paper scrolls in the last (Curves) challenge was just gorgeous - and could have been suitable here too.

Wonderful news!!! and I feel privileged that you shared a secret with us. DOn't worry, we won't tell any one ;-)

Have fun and when you come back bring lots of pictures. You can do the "zone system" pictures during some other challenge too. I am sure they have a broad range and would qualify for other topics too.

Enjoy!! We'll miss you...

Is it here yet? I thought it was to be here two days ago. I'm anxious to hear if you're having fun with it.

.................I love it! Just the bigger, brighter viewfinder and the 3" LCD make the investment worth it to me. I'm just reading the manual and playing with the controls now and trying to make sense of all the dials and see how the auto ISO works. I hope to have time to get out this weekend and shoot a bunch of pictures to upload for viewing on my laptop to checkout the IQ and noise and maybe even have 1 or 2 for Eligible! I still have a few accessories to buy: another battery and a wireless remote, but I did get a nice padded diaper bag today to use as a camera bag! :-D

We sure miss you here and are looking forward to your return but real life is more important and fun than this virtual life isn't it! Have a wonderful wedding and we're so pleased to be included in the big secret. I hope there will be lots of pictures to share with us, taken by others of course, and don't forget to have fun! Best wishes for a wonderful life as Mrs H! :-)
