My 5 month old gave me a 420 EX for Father's Day. Given all the discussion regarding its performance when combined with the 28-135 I did not know what to expect. I am happy with the initial results but wonder if I should demand more.

Could others quickly view the thumbnail and web size images located on my site and let me know what you think of the exposure? For the vast majority of these shots I used FEL (or had my mother in law use FEL for those shots where I am in the picture...) Also, I bounced almost every shot off the ceiling.

(If the link does not work you can go to http://www.gnat-man.com and get to them through the image galleries link...)

What would you suggest to improve the exposure on the images? I really like the two shots I am in - St. Louis Cards hat -, and the first shot with "Great Grandma". I think the other shots probably would be better with a falsh exposure comp of +1. (But would this have over-exposed the shots that I like?)

(Oh, by the way - all the images are family shots and most are indoors b/c this is my main use for the flash...)

Thanks for your assistance.

Craig

Nice shots. Try some direct flash shots also. You might like that better. Increasing flash compensation will help. You could also just run autolevels in PhotoShop as below:

As long as you don't mind doing a little editing you can get good results out of what you have now.

I like a little underexposure on my flash shots so I can get them just like I want them in photoshop.

Today I edited 113 photos I had taken at my daughters B'day party yesterday. It only took me 30 minutesto edit them, so editing is not all that bad. If I had used my Elan 7 I would have been lucky to have 30 keepers out of 113. I love digital. I am taking a cd to Sams tomorrow and getting 113 keepers printed for $22.60.

Nice family you have there,

Russell

I love what you did with my shot and have edited my master to achieve a similar look. (My current work flow is Linear Tiff -> Colin's Action (Normal Saturation Batch Mode with 150/.5 sharpening-> 8 bit tiff -> Sam's Club)

I am now experimenting with manual level adjustments in the Tweak Mode of Colin's action...

Did you do more than a levels adjustment? Also, this is off topic, but what color profile should I save web images to so that color consistance is achieved? (I posted all Adobe RGB images in this thread and the reds are way darker than they appear in Photoshop when using my monitor profile.) Should I be converting to sRGB?

Thanks

Craig

For the web galleries, I would convert to sRGB, the color gamut is better match to the capabilities of the monitor. I use Adobe RGB for print images.

Let me start off my saying that I am no PhotoShop Guru, but I get what I want out of it.

All I did to your photo was adjust the levels (set the white point and adjust mids), gave the saturation a +15, and contrast a +10 and that is it. I used to just play around with levels until I read an article online about the correct way to do it and since then I have had much better results and it takes a lot less time. I will look for the link and post it if I can find it.

I edit all of my flash photos mainly by just adjusting the white and mid point in levels because my flash shots are usually slightly underexposed. I shoot JPEG fine and have my saturation and contrast set to + in the camera so I don't mess with the saturation and contrast as much as I did in your picture. I myself do plan to start shooting RAW but am limited at the moment by not having enough compact flash memory.

I too like the color punch I get from Adobe RGB and if I save an image with that profile, I get the same results as you do. I have asked the question on this forum just a couple of days ago as to why Adobe RGB will not show up outside of PhotoShop. I guess web browsers will not show Adobe RGB. I kind of gave up on it and just started bumping up the saturation if I want a little extra color and staying with sRGB. This does not give exactly the same results so I have been thinking about buying Fred Miranda's Digital Velvia action. The saturation in camera set to + does pretty good for what I want anyway. I set it back to 0 when I am taking portraits.

As I said, I am no PhotoShop expert but I hope I have helped some anyway,

My wife and kids did not knowwhat camera gear Ineeded so got me a back massager because I always compain of a sore back after lugging gear around. mark

It appears you may have lightened them to much without adjusting for it. I know the shots I took with mine over the weekend were much darker. I was able to tweak them and they looked pretty good. These seem a little undersaturated from over lightening.

Your 5 month old is already earning a wage? Or are you paying him/her too much pocket money already? hee hee :-)

I loved your improvements on this post. Can you take a moment and look at this photo and let me know how you would change, besides using a polorizing filter to begin with!

Thanks!

This POST PROCESS Stuff just a mystery. I am computer literate and have Photoshop 6 I just don't what should be done to what photo!

Thanks!
I picked my pictures up today. I took two rolls with my Elan 7
(35mm camera) and the 113 photos from my D60. I wish I could have
run the two rolls or 35mm through Photoshop before they were
processed :-)

Well, as I have said I am no Photoshop master my any means of the word. But if you just want a little snap to the photo....I just auto leveled this one and added about +45 on the saturation :-) and a little USM (unsharp mask)May be a little too much saturation but I like colorful beaches :-)

Thanks Russell,

I liked your results, I think I would pull back a tiny bit on the satuation.

I tried a little on my own and this is my result.

One more question. What is that funny stuff around the edges? When I try to use sharpen edges it looks worse and forget despeckle that makes everything look out of focus to me.
