Ever notice that most photographers tend to date someone who hates being photographed? Here are a couple of pics of my girlfriend - she is terminally shy & hates being in front of the camera - these pics are a prime example. I got to keep exactly 6 pics that day (of her) - she insists on chimping immediately after the pic is taken, & then deletes anything she does not like. Simply maddening...

Lyle! Very nice - I know you dont shy away from more "experimental" edits (tinfoil comes to mind) - but I really like this...Im assuming Gimp - but which tool?

Pretty girlfriend. Ones I have dated have done the same things. Must just come with the territory.

Love you signature quote... so very true!

Thanks for the kind words :-)

I started of by running Topaz Vivacity Sharpen on a duplicate layer to give her hair a smudged type of appearance. I added a layer mask and filled it with black to hide the effect and painted with white on the mask to reveal the effect only on her hair.

Next, I flattened all layers and then duped the background layer and converted it to black and white. I then duplicated the B&W layer and ran a filter called Fractalius on it. I adjusted the settings to make her skin appear fairly smooth. Since Fractalius happens to turn fine detail to mush I added a layer mask and restored detail to her eyes, mouth/lips etc.

Next I ran Topaz Vivacity Clean and chose a fairly high setting to remove the spider web look that Fractalius can have. I also gives the photo a semi-vectorized type of look.

To add back in color I decided to colorize the photo. I used this technique:

Here is another one I did a while back using the same technique (except the colorizing). (Photo by Fred James Photography)
