A recent Best Buy promotional mailing includes a coupon to "Save $100 instantly, when you buy any lens and D-SLR camera."

The first line of fine print says, "Excludes Sony products, special order, clearance, demo and open-box items."

Another impact of Sony's SURE program?

Yup I am sure it is... it seems some coupons have small print about Sony and some don't. From what I have read hear from dealers that discount my be with-in bounds for the A700 or even A350.. but would probably be too large for the A200 and A300.

The offer makes me wonder if the DSLR growth is starting to taper off.. That is a a big discount on the low ends like the D60 etc.

I would tend to bet that SLR sales are tapering a bit particularly in the US. After all, sales of everything here in the US are tapering with the current economy, particularly luxury items. And make no mistake, even the cheapest low end SLR is very much a luxury item. I think that is the biggest problem of the SURE program, it makes no accunt what so every for local economic forcasts as far as I can tell. I understand that it can be hurtful to a reputation to have people speculating like they did because of the A700 fire sale at BB. But on the flip side, it does not hurt a reputation one bit to allow a $100 coupon to be used when ALL of your competitors are too. How is your sales network supposed to keep floating reasonable numbers in a recession otherwise? Good marketing and great features go no where when consumers simply don't have the cash to spend.

The economy is not as bad as the press would like it to be.. they have been saying recession for a year and we have yet to have the 2 consecutive qrts of negative growth needed to define a session.

But the GAS prices are a problem for people who moved out of the cities either for better schools or cheaper homes.. I would expect top end luxury items to be doing OK.. its the middle class choice items like cameras and computers I would expect are not not being bought because they are spending $200 more a month in gas etc.

And for all those that think Sony is unique in trying some price management... BestBuy is doing a "see price in cart" sale on Canon which is usually a sign the munfacturer is looking to control advertised prices.

This is the key... even with $100 off on a combo deal the Sony's are competative.. without the sales..

The A200 is a scary good deal.

Oh I know the A200 is a great deal as it is, and I don't trust the media at all for any kind of intelligent analysis of anything. No, I do marketing and business analysis for a living. While you are right that the growth indicators and classic definition of recession do not yet apply, there are huge drops in spending on non-essentials. The gas issue is a partial cause, most definitely, but it's more complex than that. I am simply saying that I do not see a good reason to bar using that coupon (though SURE does bar it anyway) on Sony products. I got one in the mail, thought immediately that I would use it on the A200, then noticed the fine print right away too. If I were to be able to use it, I would pick up an A200 to gift to my sister. Since I can't use it, I am not going to be that impulsive and others like me will either wait as well, or use the coupon on the competition. Those that wait do no good for Sony nor their sales network, those that go to the competition because of impulse are even worse for Sony by encouraging the stores to stick with the competition over Sony. I would estimate that SURE cost Sony at least a couple hundred A200 impulse sales or more this time around since they cannot benefit from this BB offer.

Gee Ken, the other day, in another forum post, you knock myself and another poster when we posted about the SURE program, saying something like "enough already". But now you're posting about it.

So, it's okay for you to discuss the SURE program, but it's not okay for others?

Hmmmmmmmm?!?

Not sure it's just Sony. They opened a new BB near me a couple days ago and in the newspaper ad there was a $10 BB gift card and the fine print eliminated so many products I was wondering if it would have been easier to list what it COULD be used for. My experience with new stores in my area was they keep getting bigger and include more in stock items so I was hoping this one would follow....they didn't even carry the Sony SLR's, I was told they are only carried in the bigger stores... pretty pathetic "grand opening"

There was a well worded question place that wasn't attached to loud whine.. to answered it.

Its like when we are out my my 5 yr old.. If she asks politly to ride the menchanical horse.. we often stop for her to do it. If she starts with a loud whine.. we move on.. goal here is so she doesn't grow up a whiner who doesn't understand what a disadvantage that is and how it discredits their opinion.

It's too bad you don't apply that philosophy to all the whiney threads/posts about the DK ban.

Whine: To complain or protest in a childish fashion.

Ken_5D, is this an example of whining? It SURE sounds like whining to me. And you didn't even spell 'crying' correctly. If your five year old daughter whines, I'm quite sure she learned how from you.

No, I'm not following Ken around, I do have a life. The subject matter interested me, especially as it dealt with the SURE program. And when I see hypocrisy, I'll call it out. I don't know what posts Ken happens to voice his opinion on, and I don't care, but he did chastize me for posting about the SURE program, so he should practice what he preaches.

sorry, I meant natruralman evertime I see ken in a thread recenlt i see his too

I don't recall seeing 'natureman' post before, so I'm not familiar with the situation. But now that you've mentioned it, you've peaked my interest.

I am sorry this is soo hard for you to understand.. you have posted over and over on the topic starting new posts. Etc. blaming stuff on SURE that just doesn't apply

I answered someones post who asked question... period my post even supported your concerns about SURE.. in that this coupon doesn't alloy to Sony.

I am quite flattered that attacking me has become more important to you than attacking Sony.. and finding proof of the negative results of SURE.

At least I don't talk to the 'floor staff' at Best Buy and try and pass that off as proof to back up my statements.
