Marik, your macro shots are breathtaking, I'm extremely impressed and i feel bad i haven't had much chance to shoot with my brand new 105 VR.

I have two questions

1) do you actually find all of these bugs in your garden? I had no idea that you could find these in the netherlands. Where exactly do you live?

2) how would you compare doing macro photography reversing a lens with using a macro lens 105VR, tamron 90, sigma 150 etc etc....?

congrats and really hope to see more. they are delightful to the eyes.

Mark, your macro shots are absolutely amazing, and I really
appreciate you sharing your setup with us.
Thanks .... my pleasure.
One question about it:
when using the SB-400, how do you get it to work manually? From what
I understand, this little flash only shoots i-TTL on every camera
except the D40/D40x/D60, which can control it manually through their
menus. I have a D80, the SB-400, and a 50mm 1.8 lens mounted to what
I think are the same cheap extension tubes you're using (ebay
special). And I can't even get the SB-400 to SHOOT when a lens isn't
directly mounted to the camera, let alone use manual controls to
limit the power. I know I can use the on-board flash, but I just
wanted to know all my options, and it looks like you've figured out
how to do it, at least on the D300. Does the D300 have the same
manual control of the SB-400 that the D40 does? That would make me
even more frustrated that the D80 doesn't have such a capability!
Yes I can use the sb400 in manual with the D300. For your D80 a triggerunit would be enough to get it working. You can find different types on ebay.

cheers, Mark
Anyway, any tips you can give on this matter would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

wigs

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the elaborate explanation of your setup.

So one question I'm wondering is how far the end of your lens is from
the subject in these shots?

I tried playing with a Nikon bellows setup at a local camera store
(don't recall the lens) but without a reversed lens & noted you had
to be less than 2" from the subject to get the right focus.

TIA

EDIT: actually from your blog, I read 52.5mm from the bug to the lens
right? That does require tremendous patience and stalking ability
then.
Yes it can be very frustrating. I serious considdered glue ;)

cheers, Mark

Hi Mark,
Amazing photos as always. I was hoping that you would post some
reversed macros the other day :)

Okay, I have some questions.
  • When I do 1:1 macro my dof at f/16 seems shallower than yours? You
seem to have more dof. Why is that?
I don't think soo. f16 is one I don't use anymore on the D300. f11 is the max for "just OK" sharpness. The magnification ratio is the only thing that controlls the DOF besides the aperture soo if we are using the same optics and same aperture it should be exactly the same. 1 thing I have notices though is that good focus is very important and a little camera shake is destroing your photo even more than on D70.
  • I remember you saying you don't use tripods very often. How do you
provide such sharp images without it. I have quite steady hands but I
don't seem to get many sharp images hand held.
I need some ground or fence, tree , knees etc. to make myself steady.

I have only a few photos with D70 standing only on my legs with no leaning. But those have high degrees of luck in it. The photo below is 1 with 100% luck.

cheers, Mark
I'd appreciate if you explained these. Thanks for sharing.

I googled alamy but I guess people can use your photo for $1? Soo what's in it for me? Do you have experience? Could I end up with a D700 with fundings from alamy?

thanks.

Yes almost all of them in or nearby our garden.

My house sleeps in Groningen. ;)
2) how would you compare doing macro photography reversing a lens

Reversed for portraits of insects etc. the rest for whole bugs and flowers.

What I like about reversing lens'is that with little package you achieve huge magnificatio. I could also use my kilfitt with teleconverter bellows etc. etc. but I would be walking with a real canon. Bugs would laugh at me I guess. ;)

no experience with glue.. only peyote and mushrooms. ;-)

Hey, quick question... I ordered a cheap tube set off ebay. I also ordered a 52mm to 52mm threaded reversing ring so I could also try the mounting of two lenses together. I held a 35mm backwards in front of a 135mm and got pretty good magnification. I need to also get a reversing ring so that I can try reverse mounting on the tubes like you have, but most of the cheapies on ebay just list older Nikon mounts, ie. "F, F2, F3, EM, FG, FA, FE, FM, FA-2, FM10,FG-20, FE2, N2000 etc. "

Are these all the same mounts as the d300? I'm guessing they are, but I'm not sure.

my answer is yes, you can there's book sales, illustration sales, education sales, etc etc. I rekon 500 good odd pics well key worded will net you at least $4000 per year, make sure there rights managed and see what happens. you have the skills to pay the bills imho.

maybe more. if you can get these into a specialist scientific library then over time maybe even more, you should consider, these are some of the best I have seen.
