Thank you Nikon!

I never said anything of development cycles. However there have been
cases of extremely long waits for Nikon gear (nearly a year) to make
it to market after announcement. The longest I can remember for canon
is about 3 months.
You must be referring to the D200 and 18-200mm lens. After over 1 year they were announced, they are very difficult to get. Nikon was caught off guard with the surge in demand without enough manufacturing capacity at that time.

The D3 and D300 were announced in August 2007 and were available in November 2007 as previously announced.

Now the D700 was announced July 1 and said it will be available end of July. So Nikon has learned their lesson.

The D700 is just what we needed. Now the 5D has real competition in
its price range
5D can be had for under 2K, not the same price range at all, IMO.

Take a picture, it'll last longer.

There is a big price difference between the d700 and the 5d...perhaps Canon knew Nikon was going to release the d700 and dropped the price so it could get the drop on the prosumer who wouldn't drop the extra 1200 on a body...Maybe Canon wanted to wait until Nikon announced the release so they could change their camera...everyone says it takes several months to design a camera so you can't change the camera last minute...what if you designed the camera so you could easily change it last minute ie firmware...what if they had a few prototypes being used and then manufactured the one they decided to work with...how long would it take to tool a factory to make subtle changes in their cameras...

the 5d started at $3000, same as the d700. a lot more camera at the same price, 2-3 years later. thats the way it goes in electronics.

They knew the answer to that question as soon as the D300 came out. The D700 is pretty much a FF D300 as far as I can tell -- not being a Nikon guy.

Sony still has a long way to go -- they need to start making lenses. Their "system solution" isn't anywhere clost to the maturity of Canon / Nikon. One nice thing about using Canon is: If I don't own a lens -- chances are good that I can rent it -- but not with Sony.

With the exception of the metering sensor, your list falls into what I would consider "Bells and Whistles", nice to have perhaps and perhaps essential for some but I could care less.

Virtual Horizon -- come on, is that absolutely essential to good photography. It is clearly not something that I have been longing for. Maybe once I get it, I'll wonder how I ever got along w/o it. Same for HDMI, you have a 12 MP camera so you need a gizmo to display your output on a 2MP display? Nice to have (maybe) but essential, I don't think so.

I woule rate the HI-RES LCD over these things and maybe the built in flash (D700) which is handy sometimes. There are lots of good things in the new Nikons but some of it is BS IMO.

It bothers me that the current 5D has been reduced in price (quite dramatically) because this may be Canon's response to the knowledge that the D700 was being released, and the new 5D was still some way off. That is not to say that a new 5D and perhaps a couple of versions have not been ready for some time, but engineers were not happy with the auto focus following well known recent problems that have taken a long time to recognise and overcome (and some would argue the problem has not been solved). I can't imagine a new 5D not using the same AF system that is used in the 1D MKIII, and including features that Nikon are now including in their D700. I am a 5D user and have been waiting patiently for the new version which, for me, must be weathersealed and retain at least the same level of IQ and ISO performance. So what will Canon do now? They must release something very soon because current 5D sales will dwindle to a trickle with people (rightly) waiting for the new version or migrating to Nikon's D700.

I do also now own a D3 after trying two 1D MKIII samples over several months - I was forced to make that decision because of the work I do. Am I now to be forced into making a similar decision in replacing my 5D? It's hard to believe that Canon have created this marketing scenario for themselves, but perhaps the new 5D will be a radical departure offering crop mode, weathersealing etc. to match and perhaps beat the D700. I sincerely hope so and very soon because, once again, I may be forced to look elsewhere and if I do all things Canon I own will be liquidated. They not only lose another DSLR consumer but sales on lenses and other accessories.

Yesterday I received the quarterly Canon EOS magazine. On its front cover it featured a photograph by a rock music 'photographer.' The image was poor in my book (it's what I do and have done for the last 9 years) and the feature on this young lady continued inside the mag with several more pages of even worse images - taken with a consumer grade Canon camera and lenses that are totally inappropriate for class/quality shooting in concert conditions. Canon seems to be losing the plot...

I have a feeling that It is going to take Canon another year before
competitive replacements are made.

That's what was said a year ago - Canon hasn't got a year with the 1D III fiasco and many unhappy 1Ds III owners too. They knew what was coming when they saw the D300. They've had 3 years to work on a 5D replacement if it isn't going to cut the mustard now it never will.
