Has anybody on this forum owned both the D7 & D7I? My D7 has spent a lot of time at Minolta for repairs so I ordered a D7i thinking a lot of my complaints with the D7 would be solved, but after seeing some of the D7i pictures from this forum, I don’t know. The D7i pictures seem a lot more noisy (grainy) and less sharp then the D7. Anyone else feel that way, or is it me? I get the D7i tomorrow and I hope I’m not disappointed again.

I hope to sell the D7 and give the 7i to my wife and I’m going DSLR, maybe the Fuji S2 Pro.

Comments from anyone with experience with these cameras would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Don

You can't really judge the quality of photos posted on the web due to compression, user settings, and other variables. I don't think Minolta has altered the features of the D7 that would affect noise or sharpness. They have been clear about the things that have changed.

perhaps slightly unrelated to the original question but:

most of the experienced people in the forum place greater importance on the quality of a printed phto rather than whats shown on a screen, when judging the output of cameras.

I personally will not be printing many of the pics I take but will instead email them to friends or post them online. How well does the output of the 7i compare with its rivals for this purpose?

thanks,

Nima

It's plain, raw and brutal overkill. After you're done cropping and resizing to make the image fit on screen it will look so amazing you won't believe it.

This is a 5 megapixel camera. For email and online pictures a 1 megapixel camera will take perfectly acceptable pictures.

In short, if the screen is your final target, any of the modern cameras will create superb pictures; you will have a hard time telling them apart. Noise that is noticeable at full resolution vanishes when you rescale.

For those purposes, pick a camera for having the features you like. Unless you buy a really crappy camera you'll be happy with the quality.

I'm in the same boat as Nima - I will using the monitor for most of my viewing, not prints.

I disagree with you on any camera will do. I'm on my 4th digital camera and the quality seen on the screen is better with each new camera I buy.

Also I want more zoom, which is not available on any "any of the modern
cameras".

I put about 6,000 shots through my D7 and am awaiting my D7i (arrives tomorrow from Ritz). If I learned one thing above all else it's that you cannot judge the images by what even the nicest monitor displays. If you REALLY want to see what your camera can do, print a high-res photo on photo paper with a nice HP printer -- it's the only truly fair way to judge your camera.

I might not have made myself clear in the original post. As I said, I have a D7 and have had it since last August. My monitor doesn't change between pictures. What I am doing is comparing D7 pictures with D7i pictures on the same monitor at the same time, and the 7i pictures look a lot more grainy than the 7. I haven't printed a D7i picture yet, but my D7 prints out really good.

Guess I'll find out tomorrow when I get my D7i.

Thanks for the responces,

Don

Oh, NOW I get it. Well, from what I've been reading, there are a lot of newbies who are frankly clueless about taking pictures, who have spent a grand on a D7i and then cry about the graniness when they're shooting at ISO 800. I woudn't trust any of the pictures people are posting (apologies to those who actually DO know what they're doing). The list of improvements between the D7 and D7i is huge, and I'm confident that it will be at least as good image-wise. Like you, I will also know tomorrow when mine arrives.

I have to disagree.

In my view the D7i shows that "normal" sharpening pictures have slightly less sharpening than the D7. And, slightly less noise. These two together means that pictures look less "processed" straight from the camera.

Additionally the contrast of D7i pictures appears more "balanced". By this I mean that D7 pictures tend to show shadows that are too strong, whereas the D7i makes similar pictures look more balanced.

Then, the D7i has proper filtering of infra-red, meaning that many colours are much more truthful - rather than having a brown or purple colour cast.

So, purely in terms of image quality, I think the D7i is a significant step forwards from the D7. Looking forward to getting the i to replace my D7...
