I'm sure this has been said plenty over the past few hours - and not only by Nikon users. As a lifelong Canon user, I say THANK YOU NIKON!

The D700 is just what we needed. Now the 5D has real competition in its price range - no, not competiton, a significantly superior camera! No more will Canon won't be lulled into releasing a pro sensor in a pitiful, feature-crippled body.

Anything less than pro-level sealing and focus in a sub-$3K FF camera and watch the feet flock to Camp Nikon.

I bought the 40D hoping to pair it up with a pro-level FF camera in the $3K bracket. Now Nikon has given its customers just that: an affordable crop camera for those long wildlife shots, and a FF camera for wedding and portrait pros. The D300/D700 combo is simply fantastic.

Over to you Canon...

PS. To all those 5D die-hards that said no-way to a sub $3K FF camera with pro features... (what's the acronym for hysterical laughter again?)

You are so absolutely right!

Canon can not go back now and give the prosumer a kiddy like AF and NON-pro features for its prosumer body's. Nikon has taken it all at this moment!

Sure the IQ of the 5D is fabulous, however featurewise and on ISO performance it lacks everything a modern D-SLR needs. Unfortunatley the same goes for the 40D. It should compete against Nikon's D300, but it can only beat that camera on price. Not on any of its features.

If Canon stays back again this summer i reckon it will be a very though year ahead for them, already loosing market share rapidly at the moment in all areas of the market.

As soon as the new Sony A900 will turn out to be a performer, Nikon and Sony might grow more rapidly then Canon might have expected.

Lets just hope that Canon will produce anything descent as a follow up on the 5D and 40D and that it won't be just an incremental step over the previous camera's as they have done until so far.

Oh yeah -- any designs for ther next 5D are way past set in stone given a likely announcement in just a couple months. Next 1D is fine -- as long as it's not another Blue-dot-Special....

I think Canon may be found wanting is this sector for a year, unless they have a semi pro feature rich body in the waiting. Let's see what they leave out of the next body, to there peril. Nikon sure know how to add candy to there cameras. If I had a sweet tooth....

Photography simple is'nt it??

Nikon knows what we need! I'm not so interested of cameras (have 1DsMk3), but what we need, is better lenses, rather than this war of Megapixels ...

As ex owner of the worst Canon lense I ever had, 24/3.5 TS-E "L", I could belive where it got it's L ... I'm so angry that I bought it ... sold it ...

The specs may be set in stone, but I'm willing to bet that the price point and release date are being looked at hard.

I think the lesson here is that Caon got complacent. It is my understanding that they have had new stuff ready in the past but waited to relase it (eg 1ds mkIII), because of thier technology leadwhich has now disappeared. Canon can no longer wait for anniversaries to release flagships, they need to release new stuff when it is available - and a 3-year product cycle on pro gear looks rather questionable these days.

I am very pleased with their D700 but I don't share your enthusiasm, I have the impression next Canon's will still disappoint. My 2 cents.

Kudos to Nikon. Now start making lenses.

Ah, yes; because what Canon really needs to do is move up the release date on a camera that's not yet fully tested and ready. They've had absolutely great experience with that. There certainly wouldn't be any major bugs in a camera body that was rushed into production ahead of its original release schedule.

Or I'm gone.

I don't need the latest and greatest. But you'd be surprised how many of my clients ask what I shoot. They ARE keeping score.

Canon has two options to keep my loyalty:

1) Come out with an FF DSLR for $1500-$2000 (with far few features than the D700).

2) Come out with a 5DII that meets or exceeds the D700 at the same price point.

But coming out with Option 1 at the Option 2 price point = I give up on Canon arrogance.

Do they check out your images or do they check out your equipment?

I have no sympathy for people who decide which photographer to hire by checking out the photographer's gear instead of the images. LOL.

Great summary.

I've been impressed by the D3 images (and features), but I prefer the form factor of my 5D (and price!). The D700 couldn't have come at a worse time as it's my birthday next week and another L lens had been shortlisted. Now he D700 looks to be an obvious upgrade from the 5D so I need to consider my lens strategy, but I can hardly find any Nikon lenses where I live, so I really don't have a feel for what's readily available or how good they are. They do seem to lack in the lens department, and that's not good.

In the end, it must be good news for us Canon 5D users as the competition will obviously help nudge Canon along in it's 5D successor quest. So perhaps the L glass can be wrapped up in nice paper. I'll give myself till the weekend to decide.

Hello. Haver you ever heard of the 5D. FF for $1900.
2) Come out with a 5DII that meets or exceeds the D700 at the same

The 5DII will likely have a 40D body, DIGIC III and be around $2200 to $2500
But coming out with Option 1 at the Option 2 price point = I give up

There is no chance of that.

I agree, Canon needs new lenses badly.

Nikon sure has been delivering great new lenses over the last year. Good job Nikon.
