Last week I shot my 9999th photo on my D80 and then the counter automatically went back to 001. Is there anyway to prevent this and let the counter continue on? I can't seem to find anything in the camera's menu to change this, if there is.
THANKS for the help.

Nikon D50, 18-55 mm DX, 18-135 DX, 50mm f/1.4, 70-300 VR, PS Ele 4, 6 books on editing photos, and one book on the D50.

There is no way to prevent it the number series only goes to 9999
then rolls.
The consequence is that there is a danger that you may overwrite earlier photos unless you organise carefully and that danger is larger than you think because your previous cam, if from the same manufacturer but a different model, may well have identical numbering.

My solution is:

a) to rename the file on download and
b) to file the photos in event specific folders

I use Irfanview to rename. That will e.g allow you to add an extra digit before the xxxx. (You will have to change that digit manually from 1xxxx to 2xxxx, 3xxxx etc but that is no big deal). In my case I also add a DSC5 or DSC8 to differentiate my D80 and D50. That way I can store them in the same folder without any concerns.

(To give you the complete picture I offload onto an old scratch drive which I use as a dedicated swap drive and cache for Capture NX then rename to files on my main drive. I leave the original files on the scratch drive until I have sorted and PP'd the shoot and backed up to my external drive and uploaded to Zenfolio and only then delete them from the scratch drive.)

It happened to me a few days ago on my D40.... Bit of a pain in the ass, but you can't do anything to change it, I just made 2 seperate folders to put the photo's in.

Can be done using IrfanView, Photoshop and others - it can take data from the EXIF information (like date and time, or even aperture, speed and ISO if you want)...

ViewNX

You have lots of options when using ViewNX to download images to you PC, you can rename them in a lot of ways, you pick the one you like, you also have options to download to a primary folder and a backup folder at the same time.

My solution, and I am sure there are others ,but I use a program called downloader pro........it is reasonably priced and can be set to sort and rename photos upon transfer.......it can even separate photos from 2 of the same type cameras....I set mine to sort by camera and then date and then rename the photos by the actual shutter count all this is done instantly upon transfer to the computer.....

Download a trial and get it set up....there is even a support forum to help you get it set as you wish.....I am not sure how I managed without it.

FZ10....20 and 30 and FZ18

D50 ....D80 - 18 to 200VR- 50mm 1.8 - 80 to 400 OS

Just trying to learn and it's slow going!

I simply add 001 to the end of the filename from the first 10000 images and will add 002 to the end of the filename of the next 10000 images. That covers me for a million images, after which time I can always add some other suffix.

Looks like this thread has become a place to share renaming ideas. I rename mine with the date from exif.
DSC_6136 becomes...
2008-06-01 15-31_DSC_6136

May not work for you, but it does for me! :)

I've been using Nikon Transfer to download my photos. I'm not currently changing the file name but each download goes into a new folder that NT creates based on the date that the download takes place. If I do multiple downloads on the same date there is a two digit number attached to make the folder name unique; the length of the trailing number is adjustable to suit your needs and I thought it was very unlikely that I would ever exceed 99 download sessions in a single day -- a single digit is probably safe but I like the two digits. Besides creating a new folder for all the photos being downloaded it also writes them to a backup file on my external disk, and adds Copyright and contact data to the IPTC data area of the file. You have the option to terminate Nikon Transfer at the end of the download and open the viewer/editor of your choice.

As Inspector Kluso has already stated there are a number of download options available when using Nikon Transfer. If you don't plan on using Nikon View NX, Nikon Transfer can be downloaded and used as an independent program.

Oh, ok. I didn't realize that it only stopped at 9999. I've never used any of my cameras like I"ve used the D80, and I just assumed it went further. Bummer, not I have to be careful not to save the same photos in the same folder where other numbers were previously put. :-)
THANKS,
GK

THanks for the tips. I have the Infr. program too, but never used it for renaming. I"ll have to check it out. It would be nice if it does batch renaming. I'll check and see.
Thanks,
GK

Yeah, I"m finding that out, that I can't change it. Too bad.
THANKS for your imput.
