This kind of makes Carl a Moses-like figure.

So, stop worshipping the Golden Calve. You will wind up being damned to the Canon forum.

Envy - on whose part? If you're referring to your kit list, then
(apart from the camera body - I'm quite happy with my 7D for the time
being) I can beat that list hands-down. I just don't feel the need to
crow about it every time I post.
"I can beat that list hands-down"

Yes, I'm sure you can, that's why this thread is ALL about YOU, isn't it?

Now try to put yourself in my shoes, honestly.

You would say nothing at all?

If so I commend you, you are the bigger man here. Although I can't give specifics, I am just too enthusiastic on the news and in general here with others not to peep .....something.

You have my apologies for upsetting you.

Could it be this what Thom Hogan was talking about in this posting at his site last week? Is the Sony also coming this week with D700?

"More Next Week

June 25 (updated)--It appears that Nikon will announce the first in a series of new product rollouts next week. I'll obviously have full details and an analysis, as usual. But there will be a more than Nikon's news posted on this site next week. Stay tuned..."

Really? You flatter me.

But honestly - 83 contributions and how many are from/to me?

Get a grip. Oh, sorry, you've already got one I see.

lets say, very soon, I am afraid many will move on to the "tried and
true" D3. Tired of waiting for the real 7D replacement.
DS,

I ordered my A700 last week and got it 6 days ago. I spent yesterday out with a group of friends in a local downtown area shooting my A700 and my 7D side by side. I will be honest and say that I didn't want the A700 to be significantly better than my 7D. I wanted a reason to be disappointed.

I can't find one worth talking about.

I spent 5 hours frustrated that every time I pulled up the 7D to shoot with my telephoto zoom I had to wait on the start up time and then wait on the AF, then frustrated that I could not see the histogram in the bright afternoon light. Say what you want about the A700 but they got a lot of things right and using the two cameras side by side just drives that home to anyone who is honest and can get around the lack of Minolta blue and the appearance of Sony orange.

AF is faster. Switching AF points is easier and all the points are more usable. Start up is faster. Display is better. Access to control is just as quick although a bit different in all the ways that matter to me. It is quieter. I could go on...

The only thing I have to complain about that I would like Sony to change is that I can't directly access my personal mode presets on the top dial. I dislike having to do that through the menu.

Shooting with me were people with any number of different cameras (Nikon D50, D80, D200, D2X, Canon XTi, XSi and Sony A100). Every one wanted to look at the A700 and give it a try. Every single one wished their camera performed as well, including the D2X owner.

In short, this camera is a very worthy successor to the 7D and you are kidding yourself if you don't think that. So much so that I am already considering a second one so I can retire my 7D honorably to my classic camera collection while it is still fully functional. Don't get me wrong...I don't want to. I have shot exclusively Minolta for my entire photography "career" but I also don't want to soil 3 years of great memories with the frustration I felt yesterday either.

I did something to you personally?

Yup, June 30th. An end of the month/cycle thingy you're having I can only guess? .... };> )P

Wish I could say more, a lot more. :(
This post seams to be about not sharing the information, just saying
that Carl has information.

So, he could tell you, but then he would have to kill you.

That is his implication, anyways.

Now you can be a second class citizen like the rest of us. But, only
if you pray at the Alter of Alpha will you be saved.
Chad, what are you smoking, and how did you get EVER come to this conclusion is beyond me. No this "sheep" is not worshipping Carls feet and no I did not offer the sacrificial lamb at the White Alabaster Temple that is SONY.

Jeez, I seriously cannot believe how you and others are so worked up over Carl and this thread. If ANYONE is acting childish, it's the ones that are calling Carl out and laying the blame at his feet.

You do ALL remember that Carl was one of the first people to post initial reviews of the A700 when it first came out, IF not the 1st reviewer...?!???

Well if you feel like a second rate citizen that is your problem. I
feel just fine ;-)
Huh?!??? 2nd rate citizen, because he has a NDA and you don't??!? With your attitude, I could see why you wouldn't get one...

Carl,

No, I would not have said anything thought it would not have been for lack of excitement or not wanting to share. I have been under one NDA or another for the last 10 years and to me not letting on that you are under NDA is just part of the agreement. People like to feel included and what you did made people feel excluded, IMHO.

I have learned the hard way that telling people you know something but can't say anything is worse than saying nothing at all and my experience is in the business world where some secrecy is expected and excepted. This is a hobby/enthusiast site, with some pros thrown in, filled with people who are emotional about their gear which only makes the reaction that much stronger. Add to that the frustration many of us have felt over the pace of things with our mount as compared to the "Big Two" and you have a recipe for hard feelings when you know something I don't.

And I want to know. It is that simple.

There is also the more than real possibility that you love what Sony has done with the Flagship but I might not like it so much. It could be the perfect camera for you and your shooting style but not fit with me and mine at all. Unless this thing is the ultimate cross between a Hasselblad and Nikon D3 offering perfectly sharp corner to corner resolution on that 24MP sensor with continuous shooting of 25 - 30 RAW frames at 6.5 fps at ISO 3200 it cannot be all things to all people and will disappoint someone. This is just a fact.

So, while I understand your excitement I can't share it without access to the details which you can't give and once I have those details I might be more disappointed than excited.

The only thing that would excite me about the a900 is if it comes with back-illuminated sensors to extend ISO and an OLED screen to extend battery power, and of course, $2000 price tag...

OK, ~$3000.

it is not the question of move on or not. it is about there is a problem about "i know something;i can't tell u; let get excited together" kind of post. Obviously not all forum users here appreciate that. So what is the point to spend reputation to do this? Sooner or later all the reputation would be all spent.

p.s. to me Carl is a respectable person and i usually visit his site. i wouldn't care to post this if i don't like or know him.

I wish you could say "you'll know more when you open your bday gift"

It is probably too rich for my blood anyway, but I'll consider anything ;)

It could equally be said that not all forum users here appreciate that there is no problem with Carl's post. It's only a problem if you want to make it so. Like I said earlier, people will always find a reason to complain - but that's life.

The Nikon forum has some respectable people who sign NDA's also. The difference is that, when some kind an announcement nears (as we learn later), they go dark.

They start no posts on the subject. They respond to no rumors in ANY kind of way, neither confirming nor denying, and no "don't worry, you'll ber happy" posts. They give no idication that they know anything or have any opinion or guesses on the subject.

Either they are more spectful of the NDA and the other parties involved in the agreement, or the NDA itself is more strict.

There is the difference.

Alex, Thank you so much! The Sony Presentation makes so much clear.

Prediction One: Sony will take over the sensor market within three
years and will become almost as dominant as Kodak was in film. Their
intention, displayed in the Presentation, is to set quality standards
for this new industry. Nikon is a customer now and others must soon
join, just as Apple moved to Intel chips.

Prediction Two: The replacement of the sensor system in top quality
cameras will allow up-grading a perfectly good body in the same way a
new processor can be added to a top of the line PC. Are you ready for
this? I am.

Speed and IQ will crown the new King! 6400 ISO the norm. How high?
This going to be fun! And at the start it will be nothing like the
gradual progression accepted as normal in the old 20th Century.
I'm certainly open to Sony doing something great, this round, but I have a feeling the things you're looking for won't happen for a few years - at least until the new backlit CMOS design (which I don't think they could possible include in this model) gets a workout in its smaller format. For now, Sony's Achilles' Heel has to do with the "noise vs. detail" issue; I'm open to being pleasantly surprised!
