That was my guess in an earlier post on this site. There simply have not been enough leaks of solid information to fit with a trully mass production cam.

Do we know which time zone for 1st July announcement i.e will it break late tonight in the UK?

Well Thom Hogan said last week that Nikon would announce the 1st of new camera releases this week , not all of them at once.

In fact, Nikon is the companythat makes more money per unit camera sold. They sell more D300s alone than any other brand dslr totals (excluding Canon OC), about 700,000/year. Another 150,000 D3s. Maybe they are happy selling 3 million dslrs a year and just want to keep share and take control of high-end. But you always need to keep a large base of future upgraders, so I think they still need to keep entry-level cameras competitive.

Still think Photokina for D90 and PMA for D60+, with 12MP Cmos like D300, LV, etc.

A German mag has the news about the D700 and SB900. Announcement
later this week, likely tomorrow. No D90, it seems:
I've been noticing that there haven't been any rumors on the D80 successor and that begs the question as to whether it's being overshadowed by all the D700 rumors or if it's flat out non-existent.

That said, I will say that the D80, for its age, seems to still look rather good compared to the competition. It was well built and outside of a few of thew fancier new features (ala live view, etc) it's really still a very competitive camera in today's market if you ask me. Nikon likely has very little pressure to upgrade it just yet despite it being "due for upgrade" for several months now.

I believe the D90 is in the works. No one seems to be able to guess Nikon's timing and priorities. Now it looks like they want a 5D challenger out first. Makes sense in a way, there was a gap there. What's next? Both 1DsIII challenger and the D90 will come.

If you have a working camera (D70 here), it's easier to wait. I hope the D90 will be price and feature "adjusted" for the recent Sony/Pentax/Canon offerings. Until then, the 80 and 300 cover the bases nicely, although arguably with another gap...

Do you have a source for this? My understanding is that Canon's gross
margin in the camera business is higher than Nikon's.

Total yes, Canon sales are around 12billion USD per year, Nikon about 5-6 Billion USD. But canon sells like 20+ million compacts, Nikon only 8 million.

Per unit camera Nikon's rate is more though.

If true, I guess Nikon is back to playing sleazy viewfinder marketing games again with a $3000 camera being chopped back down to only 95% coverage. Not pro in my books.

All I can afford is a (old) half-frame from Thailand.

No new lenses either, apparently. I guess we'll see tomorrow for sure. But this appears to be a "mini-announcement," I hope in August there will be more big news.

From more knowledgeable folks in higher forums here, the image on this VF should be better than on a D300's. Nikon reserves 100% view for top models (D300 is the top model in DX). For example, the well-regarded F100 was also 95% view and those who have it and D300 say the VF of F100 is better regrading size and quality.

And, in fact D700 is not pro, but semi-pro: the entry-level FF below the top one, as much as the D100 was the entry-level semi-pro camera when introduced many years ago below the D1X.

The rumours last week were of 2 dslrs, maybe Nikon was able to keep the D90 a secret, but IMO no, it'll be announced in August in time for the Photokina, exactly 2 years after the D80's announcement.

Nikon just loves to play "market segmentation" games, and while customers may not always like them, they still seem to participate...

How my D70 scored in popular Nikon disciplines:

1. Viewfinder games - big loser
2. X-sync speed games - big winner!
3. mirror lock-up games - loser
4. AF compatibility games - winner
5. AI-S metering games - loser :(

Well, you can't win them all - even D3 loses in the X-sync competition! Seriously, even D40 could be absolutely brilliant if it wasn't crippled by design... :(
